STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Buckle Up

As summer in the fabulous city of Chicago is coming to an end, every Fashionista and Fashionisto is dying to wear her/his summer clothing before having to dive into the fall wardrobe. It’s the last time to wear the girly and flirty: dresses, skirts, short rompers etc. Next up are sweaters, scarves and big warm clothing. Some summer essentials, however, can go straight from summer to fall.

The item of the week is belts. Belts have been and always will be around. They are an accessory that can make or break any outfit and this Fashionista made the belt work into her outfit. The bold black belt statement with a gold accent made a statement and broke up the busy pattern of the romper. The great thing about belts is they can go from season to season. Lucky Magazine has posted a guide of the best belts for fall. In the fall any Fashionista can make their baggy sweater more figure flattering

On the runways for fall 2012 designers, such as: Herve Leger by Max Azria, Monique Lhuillier, Altuzarra and many more are showing belts in ways we have never seen them before. Altuzarra goes with the more basic thick black belt. Herve Leger, however, is taking a more dominatrix approach. Designers are showing belts with dresses, sweaters, trousers, etc. but they are also showing them with coats, fur vests and tunics.

Belts come in all different shapes, sizes, textures, and styles. Almost every outfit can use one. So how are you going to be sporting belts this season? Be creative!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Buckle Up

One, two – Buckle my belt. Three, four – Is it felt? Five, six – Pick a belt. Seven, eight – Don’t pick felt.

I hope you enjoyed my little attempt at a fashion rhyme/song; not that you would ever choose a belt made of felt, well maybe you would. My advice for this week is to get the right belt. The right belt does not necessarily have to fit exactly with an outfit, but rather work with the outfit. See today’s Fashionista and how she looped around her belt to make it work with the outfit. Superb thinking! I love it. I think it looks as though that belt was actually meant to be worn that way with the outfit.

I have to admit, I do not know much about belts. But, after some brief research, I found out a useful tip: when replacing an older belt you must remember that while measuring to not include the actual buckle. Many sites have suggested getting someone else to measure your waist for a fitting of belt (just as you get measured for a bra). So where do you shop for a belt?

If you head over to MyDesignerBelt.com you will find many different custom order options that can be made – everything from school colors and exquisite types of patterns. Being the artist I am, I am attracted to belts that are themselves statement pieces. I say, take a hint from dog collars. Good thing Jon Wye makes belts!

Best of belt luck!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Buckle Up!

Boots, boots and more boots! Whether they’re UGG boots, rain boots, lace-up boots, over the knee boots or booties, everyone’s wearing them! And how can I blame them? They come in so many styles and colors, you can dress them up or down, and they can be worn with almost anything.

This winter, especially, it’s become a common trend around campus to pair them with jeans, jeggings or leggings. But this week’s Fashionista stood out by taking a different approach to this trend by making it both chic and edgy.

The part of her outfit that stood out most were her motorcycle-inspired boots. The leather in addition to the silver buckles add the perfect amount of edginess to her outfit without drawing attention away from the rest of her outfit. If you’re looking for a similar look, try a pair like these from Nordstrom. Not your style? Try a more fashion forward pair made by Steve Madden.

By tucking leggings into her boots, she keeps her outfit fashionable and is still able to show off her personal, edgy style. To add elements of femininity to her outfit, she pairs her boots and leggings with a black high-waist A-line skirt, a blue and white-speckled V-neck and a white rhinestone watch.

Hint: When adding any style of boots to your outfit, pair them with skinny jeans, a dress and a cardigan or a look similar to this Fashionista’s. And if you're having trouble finding a pair that fit your style or budget, try a website like 6pm.com
