ACCESSORIES REPORT: Summer Stripes

Looking stylish can often become a burden when trying to beat the heat. We often forget to accessorize due to the threat of sweaty sticky summer days. Therefore the question arises: how do I look fashionable and stay cool? The answer is not in accessorizing with jewelry, but letting your clothes become the accessory. Patterns are a great way to look chic without having to layer.

This Fashionista wears a striped tank dress, combat boots and a leather shoulder bag. There is no need for jewelry because she draws attention by using her dress as an accessory. Patterns especially stripes can be intimidating because nobody wants to look like a jailbird, but if styled correctly, it can become a must-have staple.

There are three ways to wear this trend. The first is keeping it classic. Ralph Lauren has been perfecting the classic stripe for years. To create this look, I would tuck a fitted striped menswear blouse into a pair of cuffed skinny jeans. The second is embracing your inner rebel by sporting thick vertical stripes. Singer Miley Cyrus has been known to wear this look with a red lip, crop tops, Dr. Martens and vertical striped jeans, creating a modernized ’60s look. The last way to wear it is by thinking ahead for back to school. That means pull over sweaters, sneakers, skinnies and a leather satchel to impress.

The beauty of stripes is that they never seem to go out of style. It is the great iconic accessory that can be worn year around. Be confident like this Fashionista and get noticed for all the right reasons this summer by showing off your stripes.

Spotted: An edgy version of the stripe trend was spotted in Marc Jacob’s spring 2013 ready-to-wear collection on the runway.
