ACCESSORIES REPORT: The Fringe Game

It involves movement, strings and a little bit of edge- oh and it’s not just for motorcycle enthusiast anymore. It’s fringe and from jackets to handbags its one of the latest trends for summer 2013.

‘The fringe game’ is no longer just a line in Macklemore’s hit song, “Thriftshop.” It has been seen in the summer works of top designers like Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs. The funky tassels are general leather (or leather inspired) and can be faceted on everything from heels, handbags and even headwear.

The funky trend got its start in the ’80s when designer Claude Montana popularized the look with his line of leather jackets. These statement jackets were detailed with fringe along the arms and back. They were meant to be bold and dramatic. Often being the center of an over the top, rock ‘n’ roll look.

This summer the originally edgy trend is making a comeback, but with a modern and more delicate twist. Contrary to its previous ’80s counterpart, this season fringe has been seen as more of a detail that compliments an overall look- not over powers it.

Our Fashionista was working the softer side of the trend when we spotted her on campus. She rocked an awesome lavender colored Rebecca Minkoff side bag with a gold metal strap and of course super fun fringe attached to the zippers. She paired her fab accessory with gunmetal colored jeans, a white scoop-neck tee, and burgundy lace-up boots. The fringe on her bag made a statement without overwhelming the look. She wore neutral colors that complimented the brightness of her bag. By keeping the rest of her outfit simple she provides a platform for her fringe-detailed bag to stand out. This in turn creates a focal point to her look.

So you don’t own any fringe-fabulous accessories yet? Fear not! Lucky for you tons of retailers are hip to this hot trend. One of my favorites at the moment is a camel colored fringe side bag from Nordstrom. It is similar to the one our Fashionista is rocking and I think it would be the perfect accessory to play up a simple look. Another fringe accessory that I am obsessed with right now is a black leather inspired satchel from Macy’s. This bag is on the smaller side so it is perfect for running around during those sunny summer days.

So this summer put a modern twist on a trend that started years ago. Grab your simple outerwear, a fringe accessory to compliment and come join the fringe game!

Spotted: The Kills front woman Alison Mosshart teams up with fashion label, Cult Streetwear, to create her own fringe inspired leather jacket.
