ACCESSORIES REPORT: Get Tangled in Tassels

In the most recent Gossip Girl season premiere, “it-girl” Serena van der Woodsen was spotted sporting a simple Twenty8Twelve vest over an Hervé Léger by Max Azria bandage skirt. What caught the audience’s attention, however, were her deep blue Oscar de la Renta tassel earrings.

Accessories like these beaded tassel earrings are amongst a variety of ways that designers are incorporating the tassel into various pieces of clothing. While the tassel has a strong history in generations of decorations and traditions, it has finally surpassed its existence on graduation caps and significance in military ranks and hit the runways.

This Fashionista’s gold, chained tassels dangle off her AKA cargo style jacket to create a bit of sparkle and juxtapose her muted military blazer. The shoulder tassels establish a subtle, yet glistening look. Layering her decorated jacket over simple, statement pieces such as her Madewell white t-shirt and 7 For All Mankind jeans proves that a little touch of gold and a few dangling tassels can go a long way.

With fall upon us, muted, autumn color hues, from burgundy to rust to orange, can be found on fall 2011 runways such as Burberry Prorsum, Milly and my personal favorite, Marc by Marc Jacobs. Perfect for any complexion, shades of orange, ranging from pumpkin to tangerine, are an ingenious way to spice up one’s fall wardrobe. As someone who prefers monochromatic tones to brights, this Fashionista chose a more neutral hue for her Chloé bag, orange, to add a bit of color while still remaining subtle.

Finalizing her look, the stars and studs of her Jeffrey Campbell leather loafers complete her ensemble with a bedazzled touch. Adding a bit more metallic elements to her outfit, her gilded details are both clever and stylish. Making new trends, while keeping up with the old, this Fashionista’s employs the perfect mixture of silver and gold.

Spotted: Tassels have been highly coveted for the fall, both on and off the runway. For fall 2011, decorative feathers, fringes and especially tassels, have become statements for ornate jewelry and served as a decoration on clothing and bags. Fashion legends such as Louis Vuitton and Oscar de la Renta exercised this utilitarian trend to embellish their classic pieces. To achieve this look, tassel embellished clothing and accessories can be found at Zara and Topshop.
