ACCESSORIES REPORT: White Out

As the warmer weather approaches, so begins our transition from heavy fabrics and dark colors to brighter, airier pieces. For a working Fashionista, blazers are a summer staple — office appropriate, easy to layer and ideal for a night out.

But for those who fear looking like a character out of Miami Vice, this Fashionista shows you how it’s done. By balancing a structured blazer with loose harem pants, her look is effortlessly pulled together. While white is obviously a very versatile color, her inclusion of various neutrals keeps the outfit looking fresh and summery. Given the range of colors, prints and textures, this Fashionista wisely kept her accessories to a minimum. Her long earrings capture the color in her outfit (and play on the '70s-inspired, earth-tone accessory trend), and her studded Steve Madden sandals add texture against the smoothness of the pants. The rose-gold, black-faced D&G watch is a great alternative to that of the overdone Michael Kors.

White blazer inspiration dotted the spring 2012 runways, with designers like Roberto Cavalli and Phillip Lim creating unique versions of cream jackets. For the perfect going-out ensemble, take a page from Kirsten Dunst’s book and don a white blazer over a black, sweetheart-neck mini dress. For a more laid back daytime look, pair a well-cut blazer with printed shorts (think florals and chevron) à la Jamie Chung. If you’re going to sport a bold print or textured piece, remember to keep the rest of your outfit basic with a simple white top or pair of nude pumps.

ACCESSORIES REPORT: White Out

When the word ‘uniform’ comes to mind, I can’t help but think back to the twelve years of my life spent in a polo shirt and plaid pleated skirt. However, I can now report that I have definitely found a better application of the term in the casual separates that I turn to for an easy and effortless look.

Personally, the white tee is a staple in my closet, which appears in varying fits and shades. White is the perfect shade to build a look from since it will complement every colour and pattern. White is also a universally flattering colour that can do no wrong regardless of who wears this shade.

This closet staple was exactly what drew me to this week’s Fashionista. She pairs a simple white v-neck tee with cut off denim shorts to produce an easy look for a busy school day. A navy blazer is slung over her shoulder bag for easy access in case the weather takes a sudden drop in temperature. A white Blackberry and white sneakers finish off the look with complementary white accessories.

Finding the perfect white tee can take some time since there are many different components to this seemingly simple basic. Zara offers a contemporary twist on the white tee with cut out shoulders and modern asymmetric panels. Otherwise, stick with ASOS for your usual selection of slouchy tees and tanks.

Spotted: Even the queen of prints opened her show with all white ensembles during the Diane von Furstenberg spring 2012 show.
