ALL ABOUT BEAUTY: Channeling Marilyn

Retro returns to the runways pretty much every season. In Prada’s spring 2012 collection, Miuccia Prada put a modern spin on classic '50s silhouettes, such as pairing pleated A-line skirts with bandeau tops and boxy coats. The play on modern and retro was also prevalent in the models’ hair and makeup. Hairstylist, Guido Palau, created Marilyn Monroe-esque coiffed tresses, while Pat McGrath kept the makeup 21st century minimal.

This Fashionista’s look is the perfect mix of retro and modern. Her mustard colored coat is a nod to the mods with its cropped structured sleeves. Check out this similar style coat from ModCloth. Her crisp brown button-down and skinny cords are basics that keep her look classic. Oh, and those lace-up Aldo wedges are absolutely to die for — and they work best with the skinny pant. What really completes her look is the hair and makeup. Her platinum blonde hair is undoubtedly the same color as Marilyn Monroe’s iconic strands. She styled her ponytail similar to the typical Marilyn hairstyle by curling the loose pieces and her bangs. She rocks full lashes, thick liquid liner on the eyelids and bold brows. Her hair and makeup take me back to the pages of October’s Vogue when Michelle Williams channeled Marilyn in this exquisite editorial to promote My Week with Marilyn.

To get this Fashionista’s coiffs, put second day hair in a low ponytail and keep a section out in the front. Spritz this section with hairspray and curl with a one inch curling iron. Break up small sections of the ponytail and curl those too. To master her makeup start with a fresh face and groomed brows. It’s all about the eyes, so make sure your blemishes are concealed and your skin is evenly toned. Try this waterproof liquid eyeliner by Stila and Maybelline’s Volum’ Express Falsies Flared mascara. To take the look from day to night, go ultimate glam Marilyn with a red lip.
