STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Denim On Denim On Denim

The denim shirt trend has been on the rise for some time now in the fashion scene. Denim can be found creating pieces like dresses, button-ups, cut-off shorts and skirts. Every store and brand finds a new way of vamping this trend and making it unique. D.I.Y tutorials also help Fahsionistas and Fashionitos create an item that’s all their own. This is one trend that does not seem to be leaving us any time soon. So it is safe to jump on this fashion bandwagon and find a denim trend to make all your own.

This Fashionista shows us a fabulous way to dress nearly head-to-toe in denim and make it work. The light denim shirt paired with a medium shade of denim cut-offs is a great way to pull of this look. While denim on denim can tend to look a bit bohemian-esque, this Fashionista made it a bit edgier by adding a pair of black combat boots.

Denim on denim, if not worn just right, can end up looking a bit frumpy. One simple rule to calm your nerves regarding the previously mentioned is to wear to very different shades of denim such as one dark piece and one light. This helps to break up your outfit and won’t allow the denims to blend too much. Try something like these Cheap Monday jeans from ASOS matched with this chambray shirt from Madewell. Wear the shirt open with a simple tank underneath or tie the shirt up with a knot. That button-up top would also go great with these denim polka-dot shorts from Forever 21. Denim beyond jeans is here to stay so fill up your closet with a couple staple pieces for all year round.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Style Salute

Military-inspired pieces are essential to any closet. Their versatility and ability to be worn year-round makes these pieces must-haves. From jackets, to tops, to shoes, military-inspired pieces can be found in any article of clothing. This Fashionista shows us one way to show off our best military-like style. She is sporting both an army green jacket and lace-up combat boots both inspired by military style. The boots have a tough appearance but are toned down with a less edgy jacket. Worn with black skinny jeans and a Vans T-shirt, this outfit is great for everyday wear.

There are so many different ways to wear this style to fit the personality of any Fashionista. For those sweet and chic ladies out there, pairing a military-inspired jacket over a floral dress can be a fabulous combination. Try something like this dress from Topshop and a staple military jacket such as this from Museum Clothing. If you’re edgy and love a more structured look, invest in a solid pair of leather pants like these from alice + olivia. Then pair your fabulous bottoms with a jacket similar to this wool one by Donna Karan. For a classis look, button up this jacket from Local Apparel with a skinny pair of white denim pants.

If you’re moved to wear this trend and not have your jacket be the focus, then there are plenty of options. This dress from Diesel would look great with nude flats or pumps. It has perfect structure and is also a very flattering cut. For a less extreme military style buy yourself the perfect pair of combat boots like TROOPA from Steve Madden.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Two Is Better Than One

Mixing prints might be one of the simplest ways to create a standout ensemble. I mean, who wouldn’t notice someone dressed head-to-toe in a perfect mix of polka-dots and floral? I definitely noticed this Fashionista and she looks nothing short of fabulous. Her stellar combination of prints made me want to run home and change into a similar outfit.

The athletic-like style of her shorts mixed with a cotton top makes this outfit very daytime appropriate. It’s casual, but she added a gorgeous wedge to give her outfit something special. Now she can go straight from class to a dinner date or night out with her girlfriends.

Although mixing prints is great, it isn’t always simple. With the wrong addition of that stripped shirt you could end up looking like a four year old whose mother let her dress herself. It can be difficult to master, but don’t let that make you shy away from this stylish trend. A tip to help you perfect an outfit with mixed prints is to make sure the colors all complement each other and are in somewhat of the same family. More importantly, don’t be afraid to try it on because something you think won't mash well together might be a beautiful creation.

Don’t have any pieces in your closet to mix and match? Here are some great options. Button up this ASOS stripped denim top or let it hang open with a white tee underneath. Then toss on this beautifully embroidered Free People skirt for a great mix of patterns. These floral pants from Topshop would pair nicely with this polka-dot tee from Forever 21. Good luck mastering the mix!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Wearable Art

There might be no clothing line that I love more than Free People. Each piece of clothing is like a work of art, perfectly designed to stand out and be wearable at the same time. Their clothing has the ability to be chic, bohemian and edgy all at the same time — but the Free People possibilities don’t end there. This Fashionista shows us how to create a laid back Free People look.

I saw this Fashionista on campus and instantly noticed her shirt. I fell in love with it and to no surprise at all she told me it was Free People. Everything about this shirt screams Free People — the ladylike print, the tough contrast of colors and the delicate fabric. I am also very fond of how she put her outfit together. The shirt comes off as very nighttime because of how structured it is and its combination of colors. This Fashionista did a fabulous job of making it a daytime piece: pairing the top with mid-rise blue jeans and sandals gives it a more casual feel. Perfect for a day of walking to classes or lunch with your girlfriends!

This top is very structured and has a corset-like feel to it. There are many ways to incorporate a top similar to this one into an outfit for a night out. First things first, you’ll need the statement piece of your outfit. This top from Forever 21 and this one from Topshop both have the same sort of feel as the one worn by the pictured Fashionista. Pair either of these corset tops with a high-waist leather skirt or high-waist maxi for a more formal look. To keep warm at night a blazer would be a great option over these tops. If you like the daytime look for these tops then just toss on your worn in high-waist jeans and some sandals and you’re ready for a fashion-filled day.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: One Piece Wonder

If you’re anything like me, sometimes putting pieces together of an outfit can get a little frustrating. All the options from skirts to shorts or prints to no prints can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you have a fully-packed closet. But if you’re looking to create an outfit with little fuss or thought then a romper is a chic and easy way to do so.

This Fashionista shows us a great example of how to take a romper and create an outfit out of it. Not only is the print and style of this romper ridiculously perfect, she also puts the outfit together extremely well. The belt helps to add shape to an article of clothing that might be very unflattering without it. The print on the romper is very bold so the Fashionista chose to accessorize it minimally as to not take away from it.

While rompers make for a quick and easy outfit, it might seem like they also aren't a very versatile piece that can be transformed into various outfits. Contrary to what you may believe though there are many ways to take one romper and create a range of looks out of it. One option is to pair a romper with a cropped top — this will create the illusion of shorts and a shirt rather than a one piece. This romper (without the waist tie) from Forever 21 would look great paired with this tie front shirt from ASOS. Styling a romper underneath a blazer paired with heels could also create another look that would be ideal for a fancier occasion. This one from alice + olivia would go great with a white blazer. Check out some romper inspiration from FabSugar and you’re on your way to an easy ensemble.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Happy Summer Sailing

There may be no outfit that’s more perfect for this time of year than one that is nautical inspired. And I mean what says summer like the sand against your feet and the sound of waves crashing into the ocean? Maybe the simple stripes, flowy fabrics and crisp whites that are staples during this very sunny season.

Although this trend is amazing, it is very possible to get carried away and go from sailor-inspired to a full-on sailor. This Fashionista incorporates that beachy feel into her summer wardrobe just right. Her double-buttoned, high-waist shorts look great with this blue striped shirt. Each piece is nautical-inspired, but not so much so that it is overwhelming. Her red lipstick is the perfect finishing touch. Vans tennis shoes make this outfit great for walking through campus. Sandals would also be a great option. Check out this pair from Mango.

There are many ways to bring this trend to life. One might be a stripped dress like this one from Forever 21 paired with a pair of classic red flats. You could also try white, tailored pants paired with a white blazer. Add a stripped blouse under the blazer and possibly a pair of red flats and your ready for date night or a girl’s night out. Accessorize any nautical outfit with rope-like details. Check out this necklace from Madewell and these bracelets and belt from ASOS. Another great way to accessorize these outfits would be with anchor details. Keep them minimal like with these studs and this bracelet from BaubleBar.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Say Aloha To Hawaiian Prints

Hawaiian prints have been quickly popping up everywhere in the fashion world this summer. Printed on shoes, skirts and tops, this trend is one of the biggest of the season. I can easily say that I have fallen head over heels for all tropical fashion items and obsessively hunted for Hawaiian-printed pieces to add to my closet. I am so attracted to the prints and colors that make me feel like I’m away on a tropical escape.

This Fashionista brought the Hawaiian trend to life in a very wearable way. She teaches us to embrace the often-feared Hawaiian shirt. These shirts can often be shapeless so it's important to find a way to give them a feminine touch. By tucking it into her high-waist shorts, she makes a shirt that can look too much like dad's much more fashionable. You could also tuck your shirt into low-rise jeans and loop in a belt or tie it up with a high-waist skirt. The Converse tennis shoes really complement the look, but wedges or sandals also work for this style.

Best of all, this Fashionista purchased her shirt at Goodwill. We may not all be as lucky as she was to score such a great piece at a secondhand store, but there are other affordable options that go far beyond just a top. These loafers from ASOS would go great with a sheer white top and a cuffed pair of skinny jeans. Accessorize with a statement necklace like this one from Forever 21. If you have much more in your budget and are looking to splurge, this Stella McCartney skirt is fabulous. Tuck your most feminine button-up into it for a tropical look that will take you to the office. No matter what your style, don’t be afraid to say “Aloha” to this trend.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: High-Waist Heaven

High-waist shorts are an absolute essential in my closet. I have at least half a dozen pairs in a variety of colors, patterns, styles and fabrics. They’re so versatile and great during every season. You can wear them with flats, tennis shoes or boots. Throw on a sweater or a leather jacket, tuck in a blouse or grab that cropped top and let it hang loose — these shorts have very few limitations, allowing you to really make them your own.

This Fashionista is rocking her vintage, Levi shorts. She shows us one way to style a pair of high-waist denim shorts through a more polished approach. The collared button-up blouse tucked in and topped off with a belt has a more sophisticated vibe to it. The studded loafers also make the outfit look a bit more refined. If you’re looking to wear those shorts in a more relaxed manner, throw on your slouchiest cropped top and a pair of high-top Converse. This cropped top from Band of Gypsies would be a flawless choice.

Lastly, I just have to discuss those shoes. I will readily admit that I am not the biggest fan of white shoes. I find myself more often than not completely disliking every pair of white shoes I see and a million questions run into my head — usually about why anyone would make or wear those shoes. The white loafers worn by this Fashionista however do not leave me asking any negative questions. I absolutely love them. The style of the shoes perfectly complement the color. The studs give these shoes just enough edge so they don’t look like shoes you many have worn as an infant. Perfection.

One last piece of advice — make sure the length of your shorts covers your behind. If not, you can take this look from class to trashy in an inch.

Get creative with those high-waist shorts! Denim ones like those worn by this week’s Fashionista are perfect for a day in the sunshine. If you’re looking to capture a more pristine, nighttime look then go for a more structured pair such as these from H&M. Enjoy!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Color Me Happy

June gloom should be setting in any day now, but that doesn’t mean that you have to let it bring down your carefree and vibrant summer mood. This Fashionista is prepared to brighten those cloudy days with the perfect pair of colored jeans. An essential during this Fashion season, colored jeans are an effortless way to create an eye-catching look.

First things first, if you don’t already own at least one, run out and buy your favorite pair of colored jeans. Forever 21, H&M and Madewell have large selections of colored pants in varying styles. Next, take a lesson from this Fashionista to create a casual, daytime look. Any blouse will do! This Fashionista opted for a simple blouse and gave her outfit more character by adding rose and colored baubles and leopard print flats. Don’t be afraid to add more color to you outfit as long as they complement one another. If you’re feeling a bit bold, wear a printed top with simple accessorizes and shoes. This striped blouse from Forever 21 would be perfect with nearly any color of jeans.

Colored jeans can also be fitting to wear at the office. For a more professional look, wear a collared blouse such as this one from ASOS. You could also tuck in your blouse and add a belt to create an even more polished look. Accessorize with bracelets, necklaces or whatever fulfills your fashion craving for that particular day. Strap on some wedges or heels and you have a look that’s work-worthy.

If you’re looking to buy a pair of colored pants to wear year-round, opt for darker hues such as red and purple. This way you can toss on that black leather jacket or your favorite pair of booties and be ready for fashionable fall and winter seasons. Worn with the right pieces, colored pants can take you from laid back to perfectly polished or from summer to fall. So go out and color yourselves happy!
