FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Linnea Rummage

There’s something so feminine and chic about ruffles and pleats, and that's what instantly drew my eye to this Fashionista’s blouse. The ruffled half-button-up is a sophisticated look that multiple designers have been featuring lately, both in runway and ready-to-wear clothing. Ruffles not only add volume where it may be needed, but they add texture to an ensemble. Along with ruffles, pleated clothing is become more and more popular, especially on blouses, skirts and dresses. The pleated trend is even continuing into the next year, as it was seen in Prada’s most recent runway show for spring/summer 2012.

Name: Linnea Rummage

Major: Fashion Merchandising & Marketing

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about your outfit.

Linnea Rummage: I’m wearing a black blazer from H&M and a blouse that I got from a local vintage store. I really liked the buttons and ruffles near the collar. Then I just have jeans and black boots on.

CF: Who is your style icon?

LR: The Kardashians are my style icon. All three of them have a distinct style and I just love them all. They are unique and trendy, but also stick to what they like. One of my favorite trends is cheetah print and they definitely rock it.

CF: What’s your favorite trend and why?

LR: Well as I said before, I love cheetah print. I think it adds a little something to an otherwise boring outfit. I also really love scarves for fall and winter. They are a good accessory and also practical because they keep you warm.

How To: Any Fashionista can rock pleats or ruffles! It’s all about the placement and fit of the garment. Looking for a blouse exactly like this Fashionista’s vintage item may be difficult, but there are definitely options similar with pleats and/or ruffles. For a half-button-up blouse with subtle ruffles, J.Crew has a variety of colors and patterns. If pleats are more your style, go for a cute, sheer button-up with pleats along the chest. For dresses, try this dress with both pleats and ruffles. Like this Fashionista displayed, many outfits can be topped off with a cute boyfriend blazer.

FASHIONISTO SPOTLIGHT: Chase Cramer

There is nothing I like more than seeing a Fashionisto sporting something other than the predictable (and unappealing) sweatpants and sweatshirt. Looking for some gear to keep you warm during these next few months may be challenging, but taking cues from this Fashionisto will definitely ease your troubles. With his classic black peacoat and Express scarf, this Fashionisto displays outerwear inspirations from designers like Dolce&Gabbana. This sleek look is much more stylish than just your average jacket.

Name: Chase Cramer

Major: Speech Pathology

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about your outfit.

Chase Cramer: I’m wearing a Kenneth Cole jacket, jeans from Buckle and my scarf is from Express.

CF: What’s your favorite store to shop at and why?

CC: I really like Express or Armani Exchange. They have fashionable items and more of a variety. There aren’t as many options for men as there are for women, so sometime it’s harder to find stores to shop at.

CF: What is your favorite item in your closet?

CC: I have this sweater from Express that’s probably my favorite. It’s a nice zip-up so it’s really comfortable, but it also has toggle snaps in the front to add a little something different.

How To: When dressing for winter, jackets and coats are an obvious necessity. Express has a good variety, from peacoats in a long, classic black to a short gray coat. Next, pair your peacoat with a cashmere scarf. Plaid is also very trendy this season. To top off this look, rock some sunglasses like this Fashionisto!

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Liz Rabens

Ombré is a trend that CollegeFashionistas began to notice not too long ago, both in hair and in fashion. Designers like Alexander McQueen, Tory Burch and Diane Von Furstenberg have utilized this fading technique. From tops to dresses and pants to jewelry, ombré is a stylish trend for this season. This Fashionista wore an ombré tunic that faded from gold to charcoal gray. By keeping the rest of her outfit simple, she was able to let the bright gold shine and just add a long vintage necklace.

Name: Liz Rabens

Major: Public Relations & Advertising

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about your outfit.

Liz Rabens: I’m wearing leggings and black leather boots from Nordstrom from a few years ago. I’m also wearing an ombré tunic and a vintage necklace.

CF: Who is your style icon and why?

LR: I really like Rachel Bilson. She’s usually more casual, but always looks cute. I like looking on Piperlime and seeing “Rachel Bilson’s picks.” It’s a good way to find inspiration for outfits based off different style icons' favorite items.

CF: What is your favorite trend?

LR: I absolutely love boyfriend watches! They are a great accessory to almost outfit and they’re perfect for layering a lot of bracelets. I like my oversized boyfriend watch with girly dresses because it adds a different feel to it.

How To: Looking for something ombré shouldn’t be too difficult this season. For the holidays, look for an ombré dress and pair it with tights. For class, an ombré top, scarf or cardigan would be perfect to rock this trend.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Alana Kingsley

As Iowa City officially welcomes its first snow fall of the year, the colder weather makes it more difficult for Fashionistas to sport their new mini skirts, favorite dresss or cute tank tops. How to dress chic in winter can be a challenging matter, but not for this Fashionsita! With an adorable faux fur vest and classic black platforms heels, this Fashionista exudes a perfect and trendy style while remaining warm from the harsh December that’s to come.

Name: Alana Kingsley

Major: Social Work

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about your outfit.

Alana Kingsley: I’m just wearing skinny jeans and a basic black long sleeve shirt. My faux fur vest is from Nordstrom and my shoes are from Akira Chicago.

CF: What is your favorite store to shop at? Why?

AK: My favorite store would have to be Pitaya because they have reasonably priced clothes. They also have really cute and trendy [styles] as well as basics too.

CF: What is your favorite item of clothing?

AK: My favorite item of clothing is my black skirt because it is versatile and I can mix and match so many different tops, jackets and accessories to make different outfits.

How To: Just like an LBD (little black dress), every girl should own a pair of classic black heels. Steve Madden is an obvious go-to for shoes during any season! Go for simple black pumps or try a pair with an ankle strap, which is a different trend that I’ve been seeing a lot for winter. This Fashionista’s camel faux fur vest can be found at Nordstrom at a steal of a price. Pair this with dark skinny jeans and a long sleeve shirt. To tie this ensemble together, an accessory like a long necklace would go just perfectly.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Morgan King

Comfy chic isn’t exactly a look used often on the runway, although it is definitely a relatable concept for a CollegeFashionista on campus. Putting on skinny jeans, a fitted blouse and full hair and makeup isn’t exactly appealing when waking up for an 8 a.m. class. This Fashionista is comfy chic in a cozy oversized sweater, leggings, a class white T-shirt and just a couple of accessories to dress it up. There is no longer a need for that old high school sweatshirt, no matter how early in the morning it is!

Name: Morgan King

Major: Undecided

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about your outfit.

Morgan King: I’m wearing a knit cardigan and leggings. For shoes I’m wearing olive green ankle boots. I also have a white bag and my necklace is from H&M.

CF: What is your main inspiration for fashion?

MK: I turn to magazines like InStyle and Glamour for fashion inspiration. Both show celebrity style but also have more affordable options for college students.

CF: What is your favorite trend this season?

MK: My favorite trend is low ankle boots. I haven’t seen them often in previous years. It’s mostly been knee-high boots and such. I really like the versatility that comes with ankle boots because you can wear knit socks with them or tights.

How To: To begin dressing up a simple white T-shirt and black leggings, look for an open knit cardigan. Along with comfy knits, ankle boots are another staple item for this season. This Fashionista rocked a pair in olive green, but brown, beige or black would also look great! For accessories, try a statement necklace and a cute cross-body bag.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Alix Kron

Chunky knits are one of the best fashion inventions for winter. Not only are they comfy and cute, but oversized knits are also the perfect excuse to whip out the tights for the colder days. This Fashionista paired her oversized knit cardigan with black tights and another fabulous winter trend: knee socks with boots. Knee socks peeking over the top of boots adds texture to one’s ensemble.

Name: Alix Kron

Major: Elementary Education

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about your outfit.

Alix Kron: I’m not exactly sure where I got my sweater or socks, but I know my tights and boots are from Nordstrom. I’m very proud of my boots because I got them at a Nordstrom pre-sale last fall for $99 and they were originally $250!

CF: Where do you get your main inspiration for fashion?

AK: I go on Pinterest, which is a great website for ideas. I also go on the website Lookbook. Also, for my sorority we have to dress business casual so I try to find ideas on what shoes to wear with a certain skirt and stuff like that. Lucky magazine is also a great place to find fashion inspiration.

CF: What is the most-used item in your closet?

AK: The item that I go for the most on an everyday basis would probably be oversized sweater, especially in fall and winter. I love them because you can pair them with jeans, tights or leggings. They’re also so comfy!

How To: Knits can come in all different shapes, colors and sizes this season. For an oversized cardigan like this Fashionista’s, Nordstrom has plenty to choose from. Under a comfy sweater, wear either plain black tights or go for a patterned pair. With your favorite pair of boots, look for knee-high socks. Urban Outfitters has a fabulous selection of knitted socks to wear this winter.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Marissa Fagel

After spotting this Fashionista, I instantly fell in love with her military-inspired jacket. The army green was a perfect color for fall while the relaxed fit provided both comfort and style. This Fashionista paired her adorable jacket with great brown Steve Madden riding boots. The military-inspired trend is great this season with so many options available for any Fashionista who wants to rock an army blazer, combat boots, cargo pants or even a military-inspired bag!

Name: Marissa Fagel

Major: Psychology

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about your outfit.

Marissa Fagel: I’m wearing boots from Steve Madden, jacket and jeans from H&M and a blouse from Target.

CF: What’s your favorite current trend or one that you’re looking forward to wearing in winter?

MF: I like wearing all my blazers still because they were cute before, but I like wearing them out. It’s an excuse to wear them when it’s cold without wearing a heavy winter jacket.

CF: What is your favorite store, designer or brand?

MF: I’m loving that they just opened a Topshop in Chicago. At school the little boutiques are super cute with a good amount of options.

How To: Military-inspired items have been popping up everywhere this season. In addition to a cargo jacket, a military-inspired blazer would be a great addition to any Fashionista’s wardrobe. As far as military-inspired accessories, a great pair of Steve Madden boots can never go wrong along with a Marc Jacobs army green messenger bag.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Katie Betken

I’m usually not one to be too daring with fashion although I enjoy trying out different trends, usually in a more subtle way. I have to admit though, I am absolutely loving the metallic/glitter/sequin/anything sparkly trend this season! Especially as the holidays are approaching, adding a little dazzle may just any Fashionista just what she needs! I immediately adored this Fashionista’s H&M sweater with the glitter stitching and the cute zipper in the back. Unfortunately, H&M does not yet have an e-commerce site available for the United States (yes, we have to wait until next fall!). Until then, many designers and stores have taken the hint of any sparkly this season between sweaters, statement jewelry, and glittery shoes!

Name: Katie Betken

Major: Media Arts & Communications

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about your outfit.

Katie Betken: I’m wearing jeans, rain boots and a sweater that I just got from H&M! I love the glittery stitching.

CF: What’s your favorite store to shop at and why?

KB: My favorite store is H&M because they have such a variety of clothes at steal prices. So many of my favorite items are from H&M, both basics and unique pieces that I find myself wearing all the time!

CF: What’s your favorite trend this season?

KB: The boyfriend blazer is probably my favorite trend this season. It’s so easy to pair it with a plain tee shirt and jeans or even a dress to go out.

How To: Fashionistas can add their sparkle anywhere from head to toe! Designers like Jeffrey Campbell have added glitter to their creations. Urban Outfitters also has a great selection of glitter wedges and pumps for those looking for sparkle. For a metallic looking top like this Fashionista’s, Zara has sweaters and blouses with metallic stitching. The perfect holiday dress or skirt can be glittery as well! Nordstrom has a great beaded mini dress and Akira has a fabulous rainbow skirt that I’m just dying to get my hands on!

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Michelle Fleishman

Getting a little on the wild side is just what any Fashionista may need this fall! Notably, fur is back this season, commonly seen in vests and jackets. I spotted this Fashionista rocking a faux fur vest and I was reminded of how potent this fabulous trend was in this year’s Fashion Week. Fur accessories have even been featured alongside designers Alexander Wang, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta and Christian Cota. Faux fur does its job by keeping any Fashionista both warm and stylish.

Name: Michelle Fleishman

Major: Journalism

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about your outfit.

Michelle Fleishman: I have jeans on with a olive green button up, a gold necklace, and a faux fur vest. I’m also wearing a pair of boots.

CF: What is the most used item in your closet?

MF: Recently my most used item is either my boots or light jackets and sweaters since the weather has gotten colder. I just bought this fur vest though and I love it!

CF: Who is your favorite fashion designer and why?

MF: This is hard. My favorite designers are probably Marc Jacobs or Betsey Johnson. I turn to both for the perfect accessories.

How To: Faux fur, especially vest are really trendy this season. With different styles and colors, you can’t go wrong! This Fashionista’s vest has mostly gray tones, so look for a neutral toned vest. Faux fur vests are great with a simple dress for holidays or even jeans and your favorite tee! For a fur jacket, Zara features many colors and styles this season. Urban Outfitters also has a faux fur peacoat, perfect for a more lady-like look. Fur accessories have made their appearance as well between fur bags and shoes. You can’t go wrong with adding just a little touch of fur to your wardrobe this season!

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Lauren Pigatto

Trench coats are undoubtedly on the top of this falls’ list of essentials and everyone is taking notice! Burberry features the perfect classic trench while Valentino makes unique trenches with ruffles.  In a classic khaki trench, this Fashionista looks sleek and stylish. She also accessorizes with a sequin cross-body bag. Sequin accessories add just enough sparkle as shown by BCBG and Zara. As the weather gets colder, one may think it’s more difficult to dress in style, but this Fashionista’s chic ensemble was one to be admired.

Name: Lauren Pigatto

Major: Communication Studies

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about your outfit.

Lauren Pigatto: I'm wearing dar skinny jeans, black boots and a tan trench coat with my sequin bag.

CF: What is your favorite brand or designer?

LP: I really like the classic style of Kate Spade. A lot of the clothes and accessories are timeless and not too trendy so that you find yourself buying something you wear only once.

CF: What’s your favorite season in fashion?

LP: I like to dress for summer because I feel that you have so many more options than other seasons. I really like the ease of just throwing on a floral sundress or a short romper.

How To: With the variety of styles, colors, and patterns, it’s not surprising that trench coats have become a staple for any Fashionista! J. Crew has the perfect classic khaki trench coat. For those who want a little more flare, opt for a bright red trench coat like one from Nordstrom. For a more feminine look, Betsey Johnson has a ruffled trench.  To add some sparkle to your ensemble, try a sequin bag or clutch.
