CLASS OF 2014: Christina

Wow, I can’t believe how quickly the past four years have gone by. It’s been a crazy, wonderful ride and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to make the move from Vancouver to Toronto. I was excited to chase my journalism dream at Ryerson University and I’m that much closer. Now four years later, I’m a lot more confident, more outgoing and more motivated than ever. I’ve learned so much and met so many inspiring people who have helped me along the way.

Some of these people I’ve been fortunate enough to meet have been through CollegeFashionista. I’ve been a Style Guru for two years now and I am so grateful for all the opportunities that have come my way. I loved getting to report on all the stylish students that roamed through Ryerson’s downtown campus each week. Not only did I get to showcase Toronto’s Fashionista/os, but I also continuously worked on improving my editorial, photography and social media skills.

It’s also been such an incredible experience making friendships with fellow Style Gurus from around the world. The CollegeFashionista team is made up of such an inspirational group of ladies—thank you Amy, Melissa and Sammy! I’m proud to have been a part of this awesome and innovative company.

Although my time as an undergraduate student has come to an end, I’m excited to say that I’ll be continuing my education as a Master’s of Journalism student at New York University this fall. I’ve had an NYC obsession my entire life and I’m thrilled to finally be heading to the Big Apple. Somebody pinch me!

WHAT TO WEAR: Work Out

School’s out and you know what that means: summertime. Going hand in hand with bikinis, bonfires and barbeques, this is the season for hitting the beach and soaking up the sun. To get that summer-ready bod, there’s definitely some hard work involved. Take the time to get fit in the next few weeks before the real heat hits. It can be tough to get started and it might be a challenge to stay motivated to get in shape, but think about the benefits! You’ll be rocking those denim shorts and tank tops with an extra boost of confidence.

I found this Fashionista in a cool and comfortable ensemble that would be perfect for a work out. She wears a classic white T-shirt and a simple gray pullover hoodie with a fun pair of blue adidas shorts with a floral design. You can find tons of shorts all over the place with different patterns or prints and they can add an awesome pop of color.

She steps up her outfit with a pair of all white Nike sneakers, which are super versatile since you can match them with whatever color your workout gear happens to be. And of course, comfort is key when you’re picking out active footwear. For accessories, she uses a durable gray Fjällräven backpack to carry all the fitness essentials and wears a pair of black sunglasses. She finishes off the look by throwing her hair into a casual top-knot.

This Fashionista shows how you can still put your personal style into your work out attire!

One Simple Change: Take this look from the gym to the beach by switching the sneakers for a pair of sandals. You can also let your hair down and throw on a big floppy hat for the ultimate beach vibe.

WHAT TO WEAR: Day To Night

When life gets busier and busier, wearing versatile outfits can make it a little bit easier. I love when you put together an outfit in the morning that you can wear all day and then into the night. It’s a great time-saver and a handy way to get the most out of your wardrobe pieces. When out shopping, it’s always a good idea to think about versatility and about how you can wear something for different occasions.

I spotted this Fashionista in an edgy ensemble that works both for a day in the city and out for a night on the town. She wears a fitted navy blue motorcycle jacket with leather detailing and asymmetrical zippers over a simple white top. This is a great style of jacket for spring because you can dress it up or down. Navy blue is also a nice change from a typical black jacket. Sometimes it can be hard to find a great fitted jacket, but it’s all worth it once you find one that is perfect for your body. She adds a pair of black skinny jeans, which are definitely a wardrobe staple.

Her killer shoes were what caught my attention. She brings an extra sense of confidence and fierceness with her red leather heeled booties. They work so well with her jacket. She finishes off the outfit with a chic pair of sunglasses and keeps her jewelry minimal. She rocks the cool, city girl look, which is perfect for making that day to night transition.

One Simple Change: For a more casual day out with friends, switch the heels for flats and add a tote bag to carry all the daily essentials.

WHAT TO WEAR: Girls’ Night Out

As times get busy and schedules constantly fill up, it’s always important to make time for friends. Who can say no to a girls’ night out? It’s a fun way to bond over a much-needed catch up session when you find yourself surrounded by crazy workloads and stress. It’s good to take a break and go out to your favorite restaurant or spot in the city—these girls always know how to make you laugh and have a great time.

I spotted this Fashionista in a perfect girls’ night out ensemble. She wears a gray textured coat and a pair of black leggings. With these stylish wardrobe staples, they both have unique detailing that draws the eye—the coat with its asymmetrical zippers and the leather patches on the leggings. She also wears a pair of comfortable high-top wedge sneakers with Velcro detailing.

This Fashionista creates a chic and sophisticated look by keeping all of her accessories black. She looks super cozy in a thick knitted scarf, which she emphasizes by wearing her hair up in a ponytail. She adds a classic black tote bag and keeps her jewelry simple with a gold midi ring. She finishes off her look with a fresh coat of pale blue nail polish, which is a great way to add a subtle bit of color.

Take this Fashionista’s advice by going for a city chic outfit for your next girls’ night out!

One Simple Change: Take this look from a girls’ night out to a fancy date night by changing into a pair of heels and swapping the tote for a sleek clutch.

WHAT TO WEAR: Meeting With A Professor

Throughout your time in college and university, there are people who help you out along the way through guidance, advice and support. Some of these wise and knowledgeable people are your professors. Whether you make close relationships with them or not, they are always around. And it’s that time of year when you may be starting to panic about what you’re going to do with your life. So, a meeting with one of your professors could be really beneficial.

I spotted this Fashionista on campus doing just that. She was on her way to a meeting and she kept her outfit stylish and professional. She starts with a simple black button-up shirt under a black and white speckled sweater and a black peacoat. She wears a pair of dark jeans, which she cuffed at the button to show off a cute pair of lace-up ankle booties. It’s all in the details when it comes to the shoes. Her vintage-inspired booties have an awesome wedge heel that not only look cool, but that she says are super comfy!

She brings in some of her personal style through her choice of accessories. She goes for classic black when it comes to her satchel and chic hat. Then she brings in a pop of color through her thick patterned scarf. She also adds in a bit of bling with a great gold chain necklace.

So take a hint from this Fashionista and make sure you’re prepared while looking the part for the next time you meet with a professor!

One Simple Change: Take this look from a day on campus to a night out by swapping the booties for a pair of heels and switching out the larger bag for a sleek clutch. You could also change into a skirt for a fancier look.

WHAT TO WEAR: Finals

The end is near. With the final stretch of a semester approaching, it’s always a stressful time with assignments, deadlines, projects and finals. When you’re busy worrying about studying, you always need to be comfortable. There’s nothing worse than being stressed about school while being uncomfortable and wearing an outfit that keeps you on edge.

I spotted this Fashionista in a cozy, laid back outfit that is perfect for spending a day on campus to tackle an exam. She starts off with the basics, wearing a simple white T-shirt and a pair of high-waisted, loose-fitting jeans with a thin brown belt. This season, the distressed boyfriend style denim is popping up everywhere and I’m a fan. The fit is great for a casual look and a nice twist on your typical pair of blue jeans.

Since the weather has been up and down, this Fashionista puts on the layers. She wears a plaid shirt, a thick knit sweater and a wool coat. She can easily stay bundled up or take off the layers. She rocks a pair of black patent leather boots and cuffs her jeans, showing off her shoes. She finishes off the look with a chic and cool leather backpack. A great backpack is a perfect wardrobe essential because it’s functional while still being stylish.

Finals can be a tough time, but don’t worry, you can power through it!

One Simple Change: Take this look from a day of writing exams to going out with your friends by switching the plain white T-shirt with a dressier top and adding a sleek clutch or side bag.

WHAT TO WEAR: Brunch

I’m such a sucker for brunch. There’s something so classy and fun about going out for a nice “Sunday brunch.” Whether you’re going out with your closest gal pals or spending time with family, it’s a great way to enjoy each other’s company while eating a delicious meal at a cute restaurant. Hello, eggs benedict!

When it comes to dressing for these get-togethers, you want to be comfortable but still stylish. Since brunch may be early in the day, you never know where you might end up afterwards, so you should be prepared for a day out. Brunch is definitely my ideal way to kick-start the day!

I spotted this Fashionista on campus in an outfit perfect for a lovely weekend brunch outing. She wears a black and white striped top over a black miniskirt—a cute and trendy combination. I love how the top flares out at the waist; it’s such a flattering fit. She adds a pair of black tights, black flats with gold detailing and a cropped denim jacket for a great spring look. A denim jacket is always perfect for the season because they are so versatile. You can easily throw it on over a classic T-shirt or floral dress.

She brings her personality out with her choice of accessories. She layers on the bracelets and wears a jeweled statement necklace, adding pops of color throughout the outfit. She finishes it off with a thin brown belt.

One Simple Change: Take this look from a casual brunch to a fancy night out by swapping the denim jacket for a chic blazer and switching the flats for a pair of heels or wedges.

WHAT TO WEAR: School Spirit

Ryerson University may not have a football team or a group of cheerleaders, but we do have a fantastic fashion program that has a ton of enthusiastic supporters. With a campus that is integrated right into the downtown Toronto core, it’s a stylish hub of fashion-forward students. Ryerson boasts the title of hosting the world’s largest student-run fashion show, known as Mass Exodus.

The highly anticipated event took place just last week, where graduating fashion students showcased their collections and capstone projects. It may not be your typical school spirit event, but it definitely brings together the Ryerson community.

I spotted this Fashionisto showing his support and school spirit by rocking a special limited edition Mass Exodus snapback featuring the sleek black and white design. The hats weren’t able to be purchased. Instead, they could only be won through social media and the Mass Exodus app. He also repped Canadian fashion by wearing an aviator style jacket by the Canadian brand, Moose Knuckles. He keeps the rest of his outfit simple by wearing a classic gray T-shirt and a pair of black skinny jeans. He finishes off the look with a pair of high-top sneakers.

When it comes to showing school spirit, not everyone wants to step out on the streets decked out in collegiate gear from head to toe. I like how this Fashionisto went for a more subtle expression of school pride. It’s the details that catch your eye and sometimes a little can go a long way.

One Simple Change: Take this look from day to night by swapping the T-shirt for a collared dress shirt and change into a pair of leather oxford shoes.

WHAT TO WEAR: Weekend Getaway

Whether you’re heading out to the cottage or on a mini road trip to the next town over, it’s always fun to get away for a little while. Use the weekends to your advantage and get off campus or out of the city for a much-needed escape from school. Times can get really stressful if you don’t give yourself a break every once in a while! After you plan where you want to go, you need to plan your outfit. You definitely want to be comfortable, but keep in mind that you never know who you may run into. Being comfy yet stylish is the key.

I spotted this Fashionista on campus in a casual cool-girl ensemble. She combines simple pieces, different textures and a pop of color for a great go-to outfit for traveling. She wears a cozy light gray sweater and a pair of dark jeans, which she cuffed at the bottom. She ties a sweatshirt around her waist, giving off a bit of a ’90s vibe. She adds a vibrant blue coat, a pair of black leather ankle boots and a canvas tote bag.

Her bag is the perfect style for carrying your travel essentials around for a short weekend getaway; it’s also an awesome shout-out to Toronto with the bold YYZ lettering! She finishes off her look with a set of perfectly manicured light blue nails.

One Simple Change: Take this look from day to night by wearing a dressier top without the sweatshirt and swapping the tote bag for a smaller clutch or cross-body bag.

WHAT TO WEAR: Library

Although it might be hard to believe, it’s around that time of year again when you have to deal with upcoming exams and project deadlines. Time sure flies. When you think about having to study for hours on end and spending lots of time working in one spot, you definitely don’t want to worry about what you’re wearing. For those long days cooped up at the library, you’re going to want to be comfortable.

I spotted this Fashionista on campus in an outfit that looks effortlessly cool and would be a great go-to ensemble for a busy day of hitting the books. She starts with a basic black crewneck top under a two-toned varsity jacket with leather sleeves. For an extra layer, she adds a camouflage print vest with a pop of bright yellow. For a more laid back and casual look, she wears a pair of distressed light blue jeans. You can easily do this to your own jeans for a fun fashion DIY project.

She also rocks a pair of colorful kicks. A great pair of statement sneakers are a must-have for any wardrobe because they’re the perfect combination of function and style. She finishes off the outfit with a tote bag, which is a convenient choice for carrying those books to and from the library, and everywhere else in between.

One Simple Change:  Take this look from a day at the library to a fun girls’ night out by swapping the sneakers for a pair of cute ankle boots or heels, if you prefer. You can also leave the vest and tote bag at home.
