FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Shakurah Brack

Grunge chic is the perfect trend to end our summer styling tips. Oversized sweaters and leather pieces prepare us for the fall semester. These trends are highlighted by dark colors such as olive green, burgundy, black and gray.

This Fashionista is modeling a quick preview of what the grunge trend has to offer. Her leather leggings are layered under a cute olive green sweater. She also laced up her All-Star Converse to complete her look.

Name: Shakurah Brack

Year: Senior

Major: Fashion Studies

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your style?

Shakurah Brack: I would describe my style as unique and versatile.  I can definitely rock a girly look, as well as a tom-boy ensemble. I also like to mix and match prints.

CF: What are your “go-to” styles?

SB: On a regular day, I love picking out oversized graphic tees or sweaters. Printed or thrifted button-ups are also on my go-to styles.

CF: What is your favorite season to dress for and why?

SB: Fall. There is no question about that one. Nothing beats wearing big comfy sweaters. I love layering my clothing. So, I think fall gives everyone a better chance to be creative and chic with their outfits.

CF: What is your style influenced by?

SB: The media and music has a lot of effect on the fashion industry in general. However, most of the outfits I wear aren’t common for most people to wear on a daily basis. I like taking risks.

CF: What would you never be caught wearing?

SB: Plaid. I’m not very fond of of it. I think the style is too common.

How To: Leggings come in different colors, patterns and styles. You can purchase these same leather leggings at NASTY GAL. Don’t forget to pair off your bottom with an oversized top. Finding cute oversized sweaters is simple. Check out Karmaloop for some nice sweaters and graphic tees. This is a great online shop to scope out your favorite streetwear items. You can also take a trip to any men’s section ladies. Their styles are just as trendy as ours.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Cadine Lewis

Having a hard time finding the perfect bottoms? The wait is over. This fall there are so many different bottoms to choose from. Styles range from palazzo, harem, drop-crotch to lounge trousers.

With different fits and patterns, these bottoms are perfect for a transition into a bohemian chic wardrobe. They can easily be paired with a fitted top. This way you can show off your small waist. Similar to this Fashionista, who let her pants do all the talking.

Name: Cadine Lewis

Year: Senior

Major: Nursing/Liberal Studies

CollegeFashionista: What inspired your outfit today?

Cadine Lewis: It’s hot out, but I’m on my way to work so I still have to dress professional. I went for a casual, yet simple look. You can never go wrong with a basic black and white combination.

CF: How would you describe your style?

CL: My style is very classy. I usually go for an all black look, with a touch of leather. I just think classic looks are timeless.

CF: Have any summer trends been taking over your wardrobe?

CL: Yes! I am in love with palazzo pants this summer. They are very stylish and versatile. They can be paired with heels, flats and even sandals for the appropriate occasion.

CF: What fall 2013 trends are you looking forward to?

CL: I’m looking to change up my style a bit for fall. I’m getting into this bohemian chic look. Everything is oversized and comfortable. It’s going to be a hard transition, but it’s nothing a little shopping can’t help.

How To: Looking for the perfect bottom doesn’t have to be hard. Figure out the fit and style you are looking for. This Fashionista purchased her pair of lounge pants at Zara. This is a great place to look for trousers for work or an interview. If you’re looking to achieve a more boho look, then check out the harem pants at Urban Outfitters. Let your pants do all the work. Just find some bold accessories to match with an oversized handbag and now, you are ready for a nice walk in SOHO.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Jasmine Johnson

It’s not fall just yet; however, these summer days are passing us by quickly. The sudden weather change is in full effect. With the chilly morning breeze and the dark gray skies, it’s time to start thinking about fall trends.

This Fashionista is sporting a high-waisted silhouette that will flood our closets this fall. Whether this style applies to a pair of pants or skirt, it will highlight our urge to purchase lots of oversized tops and biker jackets. Along with concentrating on different silhouettes, we can look forward to paisley and baroque prints.

Name: Jasmine Johnson

Year: Senior

Major: Women/Gender Studies

CollegeFashionista: What  inspired your outfit for today?

Jasmine Johnson: I’m definitely dressed appropriately for the weather change that’s been going on. It has been a little bit chillier than usual. So, I decided to pull my look together with this Chicago Bulls leather jacket. I’m wearing a nice black crop-top with fitted high-waisted, just in case the weather decides to lighten up throughout the day. I also had to lace up my Nike Air Diamond Turf II sneakers. Sandals would have not done this jacket justice.

CF: How would you describe your style?

JJ: My style ranges from form-fitting and sassy to sporty and comfortable.

CF: Has anyone ever referenced your style to a celebrity?

JJ: Yes! My hair used to be longer than what it is now. So, after I cut my hair everyone thought I resembled Rihanna. This came to my advantage because Rihanna is one of the few celebrities that looks good in anything she wears.

CF: Have any summer trends been taking over your wardrobe?

JJ: I’m already a fan of crop tops, but this summer it’s been a “crop top craze.” I love the different patterns and colors. I think they can be paired with just about anything. I especially love to match them with high-wasted pants or shorts to show off my slim waist.

CF: What fall 2013 trends are you looking forward to?

JJ: I like the silhouettes for fall. Clothes are either tight and sassy or loose and Bohemian. Both sides are exciting to include in my wardrobe. I can see that thrift items might be favored for this upcoming season.

How To: Find a stylish oversized biker jacket for the fall. Check out great prints and patterns from ASOS so that you can make your outfit pop. You can always put together a tight silhouette for your bottom to balance out a loose fit on top.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Satie Sharma

Dark floral patterns are flooding our wardrobes as a back to school trend. Transitioning from summer to fall, we can expect to see these floral patterns floating between bandeaus, chiffon shirts, pants and bomber jackets. It seems like this Fashionista caught on early.

With two cut-outs on the sides of her dress, this Fashionista modeled this floral patten beautifully. She projected a sophisticated look for the day by adding a magenta lip and simple updo. This Fashionista is ready for a lunch date, class or even a festive night out with friends.

Name: Satie Sharma

Year: Junior

Major: Biology

CollegeFashionista: What influenced your outfit for today?

Satie Sharma: It’s summer so why not style myself in a cute summer dress. Today is one of the hotter days of summer; I was definitely not walking outside with pants on. I went for a ’50s look with my choice of lipstick and hairstyle. It’s never too hot to show off a colored lip.

CF: What are your “go-to” styles?

SS: My “go-to” styles vary depending on the weather. I always want to look trendy, while remaining comfortable. On hot days, I don’t think twice about wearing a summer dress and sandals. Cooler days call for a nice pair of high-waisted shorts or even patterned harem pants.

CF: How would you describe your sense of style?

SS: My personal style is very girly and cutesy as you can tell by my outfit choice for today. I really love accessorizing. I rarely wear items that would make me look like a tomboy. However, I can still pull off an edgy look through different hairstyles and makeup choice.

CF: Do you like vintage trends?

SS: Yes, I love vintage patterns and trends. I think they go perfect with my look. I enjoy thrift shopping so that helps expand my wardrobe in giving it an old-school vibe.

How To: Stores are currently transitioning their merchandise for back to school wear, so you are in luck. Start purchasing your own dark florals now before they sell out. If you’re looking for a girly style, similar to this Fashionista, then pick out a nice baby-doll or body-con style floral dress from ASOS. Otherwise, check out some bomber jackets or pants at Forever 21. Style them with your favorite studs or spikes to show off a grunge look instead.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Raquel Diaz

Looking for a comfortable fit this summer? Try a pair of high-waisted pants on for size. This high-waisted trend dates all the way back to the ’40s and it’s definitely making its way back around. Incorporated in different styles, you can find this trend not only in jeans but also skirts and shorts.

This Fashionista shows you how she loves to style her own pair of high-wasted jeans. This style is worn to outline your silhouette, so don’t try to hide it with an over-sized top. Finding the perfect cropped top or shirt is key to highlighting this look. Remember the point is to show-off your curves, not cover them.

Name: Raquel Diaz

Year: Senior

Major: Psychology

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your sense of style?

Raquel Diaz: My style is a mixture of different trends. I love wearing wild prints and bright colors, but I have my days where I love going for a simple look as well. Most of the time I pay closer attention to my makeup and hair more than anything.

CF: What are your “go-to” styles?

RD: Anytime I’m going somewhere or just hanging out with friends, I don’t think twice about putting on a nice pair of high-waisted pants. I usually pair these with a nice crop top or a regular shirt I could tie-up. This is similar to the outfit I am wearing today. Simple, yet cute.

CF: If you could switch wardrobes with anyone, who would you choose to switch with?

RD: Rihanna, of course. There is no question about that one. She always takes risks when she puts her outfits together. She basically sets the trends and standards for most of us. Rihanna knows how to give us sex appeal, while still pulling off a hard-edged punk look.

CF: What trend do you like so far from summer 2013?

RD: So far, I’m loving the bodysuit and cropped top trends. Stores are coming out with more styles and prints. This definitely makes it easier to achieve a Rihanna-inspired look.

CF: What are your favorite stores?

RD: There are so many stores to choose from. I definitely shop at stores like Forever 21, but I appreciate styles at American Apparel and Urban Outfitters a bit more.

How To: American Apparel is the place to be, if you want to achieve this look. Most of their selections consist of crop tops, bodysuits and high-waisted jeans or shorts. Spice up this look with a few accessories as well. A bold statement necklace or cute bracelets will do the job of making your outfit stand out.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Esraa Omer

Ladies, all the sweat and hard work from the gym this year was worth it. Because, this summer everyone is talking about crop tops. Reward yourself by showing off those toned abdominal muscles. These tops can be paired up with skirts, high-waisted shorts, jeans or leggings. They are so versatile. They can also easily cross over from a day look to an outfit for the night.

This Fashionista isn’t wearing your typical solid colored crop top. Hers is a polka-dot chambray top that easily matches this white cotton skirt. Keeping her look simple for this sunny day, she’s ready to enjoy a nice walk in the park.

Name: Esraa Omer

Year: Senior

Major: Psychology/Education

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your sense of style?

Esraa Omer: I recently started getting into fashion and the different trends this season. My usual go to outfits would be a nice chiffon top and jeans. However, this summer I am dedicating a lot of time to changing up my wardrobe. Anything with bold prints, patterns or colors are on my shopping list. It’s time for me to bring some life to my closet.

CF: What have you recently purchased to build up your wardrobe so far?

EO: Last week, I went shopping for shoes. You can never have too many. I was especially looking for everyday shoes so I bought about five pairs. They ranged from pointy-toe flats to cute wedges.

CF: Is your style influenced by any celebrities?

EO: I think the media has a strong influence on what everyone wears. I wouldn’t say that there is one celebrity in particular that affects my personal style. However, I would say that for most of my friends celebrities like Rihanna, Beyonce or even Kim Kardashian reflect in their styles and wardrobe.

CF: What trend do you like so far from summer 2013?

EO: I am definitely a fan of crop tops this summer. I’ve been hitting the gym and I am excited to show off the progress I have been making.

CF: What are your “go to” stores?

EO: I shop at many different stores. When I’m in a rush and I need an outfit for the night, I always stop by Forever 21, H&M or American Apparel. These stores never disappoint. I can always find something cute and trendy at an affordable price.

How To: You can purchase your own crop top at just about any store. Check out American Apparel first. This store is know for its basics, but definitely notable for its great quality in crop tops and bodysuits. They come in so many different colors and patterns. Find one that fits the style you are going for.

FASHONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Nisma Haq

The weather has been pretty unpredictable this summer. You’re not sure whether it’s appropriate to wear dresses and shorts or bring out a light jacket for the rain. This can definitely make getting dressed in the morning more complicated than it has to be. However, you can always find alternative pieces from previous seasons and cross them over to a summer outfit. Take this Fashionista’s sheer chiffon top for instance. This Fashionista can wear this with a skirt on a hot day; but for a day that is a little bit more breezy it can be paired with some nice jeans. She also chose to pair her chiffon top and jeans with cute sandals to complete her look.

Name: Nisma Haq

Major: Human Resource Management

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: What is your favorite thing to wear in the summer?

Nisma Haq: On hot summer days, I love wearing dresses and skirts. Think about it. We wear jeans almost all year round. So, I have to show my legs off at some point.

CF: Where have you been shopping the most recently?

NH: I recently fell in love with a store called Cotton On. I find so many nice skirts, dresses and shorts. Their clothing has great quality and they always have so many good deals.

CF: Is there something or someone who inspires your style?

NH: My Indian culture and background help inspire the clothes in my wardrobe. It mostly influences the patterns and jewelry I wear.

CF: What is your favorite accessory?

NH: I love all my necklaces. Whenever I wear necklaces they always make a bold statement. I buy most of them from stores like Forever 21, ALDO, Zara and H&M.

How to: As I mentioned before, a lot of styles from previous seasons cross over to our summer trends. This Fashionista’s outfit can even be paired with some combat boots or laced-up booties. Check out ALDO for some nice summer shoes. Zara is also a great place to find nice sandals and heels.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Mecca Newton

Don’t be afraid to dress up your graphic T-shirt for a night out. Make sure to buy a couple for the summer. Name: Mecca Newton

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your sense of style?

Mecca Newton: My style is more on the urban side. Graphic T-shirts and sneakers are the two main concepts in my wardrobe. This is mainly because I love to dress comfortable when I go out.

CF: What type of sneakers do you like wearing the most?

MN: Well, today I have on a pair of Air Jordans. So, I would say my “Jays” are my go to sneakers. You can pair them with leggings, jeans or even shorts.

CF: Do you switch up your style with what is trending in stores?

MN: I do, sometimes. It depends on what is trending. Right now, I am wearing this chambray shirt that I would say it somewhat trending. I’ve seen it in so many stores. Other than that, I pretty much just wear what I think looks nice on me.

CF: What trend do you like so far from summer 2013?

MN: Graphic muscle T-shirts are everywhere with different colors and styles. They can literally be paired up with just about anything.

CF: How would you dress up for a night look?

MN: I would change out of my sneakers and slip on a pair of heels. Take off the chambray shirt. Let my hair down. Put some makeup on, grab my clutch and I am ready to go.

How To: Most stores at the mall will carry graphic T-shirts that might interest you. However, you should still check out some online stores such as KarmaLoop, ASOS, and Nasty Gal for a variety of styles as well. You can even get creative and make your own shirt. YouTube has some great tutorials to help you along the way. Buy some fabric paints, get some scissors and design your own graphic T-shirt to show off to your friends.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Myoshi Cisco

School is out and summer is in. It’s time to go job hunting, if you haven’t done so already. Make some extra spending money for those eventful summer days and nights. Remember no shorts, belly rings or tattoos for your job interviews. Even though it’s still hot outside you have to be aware of the setting you are in. You have to dress to impress. This Fashionista shows her way of making a great first impression.

Name: Myoshi Cisco

Year: Junior

Major: Mathematics

CollegeFashionista: Describe your style:

Myoshi Cisco: My style is simple. Most of the time I get dressed according to my mood. I’m not so much of a girly-girl, but I know when it’s time to slip on a dress and a pair of heels.

CF: What is your favorite accessory?

MC: I love my Louis Vuitton wallet. It’s a wristlet and I literally carry it everywhere. I have my life in it, so I would really hate to lose it.

CF: What do you focus on the most when getting ready to go out?

MC: Even when my outfit is just a tank top and jeans, I pay the most attention to my hair. My face is the first thing people are going to look at so my hair has to be perfect. No one is going to care about what I’m wearing if my hair is messy.

CF: What shoes do you find yourself wearing the most?

MC: I usually slip on my TOMS before I leave the house.

CF: What’s your favorite summer trend?

MC: Everywhere I go I see bathing suits with fringe on them. I can’t wait to buy one. Maybe I’ll get it in a bright neon color.

How To: Getting ready for an interview is always tricky. Start off by doing your research. Know the company you are interviewing for. If the company is fashion related, then there is an opportunity for you to think out of the box. You can be flashy to a certain extent. However, other companies might prefer regular business attire. You can never go wrong with a pair of black slacks and a button-up shirt. Don’t wear excessive jewelry. Tone down your makeup as well. Being simple is sometimes better. The skills you have to offer should overshadow your appearance.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Perla Leonardo

Take your studded shirts, shorts, shoes and dresses anywhere. Look at this Fashionista as she models her studded and spiked dress with a cute patterned heel on a regular day. Whether you are going to class, the beach or a party keep the studs and spikes trending with you. They are sparking an edgy twist that stands out above other summer trends.

Name: Perla Leonardo

Year: Sophomore

Major: Pscyhology

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your sense of style?

Perla Leonardo: My style varies depending on the mood I’m in. Nothing screams fashion more than versatility. Sometimes I dress very girly with my jewelry, purses, and heels. But I know when it’s time to bring out my Jordans and snapbacks. This is when I feel the most comfortable in my baggy jeans and graphic t-shirts.

CF: What inspired your outfit?

PL: Today, I wanted to dress up. I bought these shoes five months ago and this is my first time wearing them. What’s the point of having a closet full of dresses if you never get a chance to wear them.

CF: What are your favorite online stores?

PL: I recently fell in love with ASOS! This is where I bought this dress. They have amazing deals for students and the styles are so trendy. Other stores I like to shop at are NASTY GAL and Karmaloop.

CF: What trend do you like so far from summer 2013?

PL: Bright nail polish! Every girl should get a nice pedicure if she wants to have her feet out this summer. Choosing a bright color for nail polish is a great way to brighten up your mood. I’m wearing this bright orange color and I love it.

CF: How would you dress down this look for class?

PL: Easy, I would change my heels to a pair of black gladiator sandals. A pair of combat boots would work too. Then, I can wear a nice cross-body bag to hold all of my belongings.

How To: Instead of shopping for studded and spiked clothing, try designing your own pieces. Check out some DIY tutorials on YouTube to learn how to make studded jackets or even spiked shorts. If your not sure about studded items fitting your style, then try the studded trend on a bag or pair of shoes first. The smallest detail can bring attention to a simple outfit.
