Here Are 4 Ways to Fall in Love with Your Solitude

The words in Rupi Kaur’s New York Times bestseller Milk and Honey struck my soul in more ways than one. A page that particularly opened my eyes to the internal struggles of the world quoted, “fall in love with your solitude.” This led me to wondering, what is it that makes our generation so terrified of being alone?

I took it upon myself to challenge these fears and defeat the dependence we all drown in throughout our daily lives—this made me realize that being comfortable on your own is practically a superpower. Requesting a table for one gives you the opportunity to occupy yourself with nothing but your own thoughts, feelings, and desires, and it’s absolutely liberating. It can teach us fortitude and the ability to satisfy our own needs, while also bringing forth the longing to explore and confidence to be an individual. So why is there such a negative stigma?

Total solitude is meant to be celebrated—all it takes is one killer experience and you’ll be hooked. So if spending a weekend solo is a prospect you do not find wildly appealing, I’m here to change your mind. Beginners, here’s what to do:

1—Manage your time

As life pulls you in several different directions, always remember to never let a busy schedule force you to give up the things you love. Write your poetry. Read your books. Go on those nightly runs. Even when it feels like there’s not enough time in the day, it’s so important to make time for yourself.

2—Find your safe place

In a culture that thrives on constant stimulation, the trick to enjoying the accompaniment of your own mind is to never be bored. Finding a place that satisfies all your needs is key. Intimidated? Take baby steps and try a matinee movie or mid-day shopping trip. An hour a day is sure to keep you feeling refreshed and ready for the big leagues in no time!

3—Disconnect

Because we live in an age where you’re reasonably presumed dead if you don’t answer your phone in a certain period of time, airplane mode is truly an electronic saving grace if you want total peace going off-grid. Instead of investing your “me time” in everyone else’s whereabouts on Snapchat, you owe it to yourself to pull the plug.

4—Journal

Now that you’ve ditched your cell, bring a pen. During the loner phase, you’re forced to speak less and listen more—whether that be to your personal thoughts or eavesdropping on the quirky couple behind you, write it down. Self-reflection is the first step to personal growth.

No matter what place you’re at in your journey, be easy, take your time, and remember, you can always come home…to yourself. It’s time to start living and spend time just doing you.

Do you crave alone time? If so, let us know how you’re spending it in the comments below!

The Color Every It-Girl Will Be Wearing This Fall

As the school year kicks off, it’s time to overhaul the free-spirited summer wardrobe we worked so hard to perfect and transition into something a bit more fall-season refined. But how do you turn heads on the first day without looking like you’re trying too hard?  Don’t worry, a few pops of color are sure to do the trick, and we’ve got a color scheme that’ll put your color-phobic closet to shame.

PHOTO: Kelly Rogowski

After New York Fashion Week it became evident that Power Red was officially the color of the season, thanks to Givenchy, Max Mara, and Fendi’s fall 2017 ready-to-wear collections. And while the undeniably bold hue continues making a comeback both on and off the runway, our confidence is at an all time high because of it.

Incorporating bright primary colors into the mix is a surefire way to scare away the back-to-school blues and keep your look more interesting than ever. Whether you commit to subtle beauty pops, like a red lipstick, or dive deep into cherry bomb monochromes, your hint of rebellion will indefinitely be swoon-worthy.

While black will always be our ride-or-die, it’s time to step outside your comfort zone and rise to the occasion in color. Devote this semester to getting comfortable in the uncomfortable—both in fashion and your personal life, because pushing through fear and challenges is where you’ll find the courage to grow and where you’ll surprise yourself the most.

What To Do When You Feel Like Your Brain May Explode From Stress

When life smacks you hard in the face, leaving you legitimately wondering if you’re going through a quarter-ish-life crisis, it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Whether you’re facing financial burdens on a ramen noodle budget or a broken heart not even chocolate can mend, bad things happen out of no where all the time. But the question is: how do you overcome them as a better you?

Let’s face it, it’s easy to lose sight of yourself when the walls start to cave in, but the way you deal with those shortcomings reflects your character, and every struggle you’re faced with provides you with a gift of clarity. Messes, both big and small, are inevitable. However, in any moment, you have a choice. You can meet challenges as the narrow perception of personality or as the infinite expansiveness of spirit.

Recognizing the beauty life has to offer allows you to stop judging situations as good or bad, and simply be with what is. And in that space of acceptance, you can experience what you need while expanding into more compassion, gratitude, and self-love. (Photo via @maddyhaller)

Here’s your step-by-step guide to help sort through the messiness and make it out alive!

Emotionally Prepare— Practicing mindfulness, staying in the present moment, and learning meditation can help to stabilize your life in tremendous ways. And while it’s nearly impossible to predict the devastation of every situation, building a life full of good friends and aspirations can help to cushion in times of crisis.

Press Pause— Good decisions rarely happen on impulse, unless you’re talking about the shoes you bought on your lunch break last week. Let’s be real, in the heat of the moment you just can’t think straight, and research shows that intense emotions get in the way of problem-solving and logical decision making. So the first thing to do, no matter the situation, is slow down. Take a deep breath and realize you’re not thinking clearly before you make any rash decisions. When the time eventually comes to think bigger, having a clear sense of your values or purpose in life will help to figure out what’s next. (Photo via @mmoor)

Process— After acknowledgement comes processing, and although we’re all guilty of overanalyzing situations, replaying them in our minds, and painfully revisiting experiences— obsessing over the past has a way of consuming happiness and slowing the coping process. So in this stage, focus on what is happening without letting it consume you.

Back To The Future— It’s eye-roll inducing, but try to see the possibilities for change and personal growth through the sadness and flux of your current situation. When you’re in your bag, it’s important to remember that we’re always shifting one way or another and THAT’S OK. Emotions come and go; relationships come and go; time comes and it’s gone. But one thing that sticks throughout it all is yourself, and you can’t give up on her. (Photo via @lovelyykelly)

Life is fragile. Never skip the chance of showing someone you give a shit, pass on an I love you, and take care of yourself when you need it the most—be the best you, for yourself.

How do you find self-care in the times of stress? Let us know your tips in the comments below!

These Are the Summer Reading Books You Actually Want to Read

As your journey toward personal growth and adulting continues pulling you in a hundred different directions, both near and far from your potential, no matter what you’re going through, whether it be a break-up, confidence issues, a general life rut, or all of the above— it’s important to know you’re not  alone.

Even the most successful authors are juggling with their own demons everyday, writing about them, and sharing their struggles with the world. And because the areas we are weakest are the places that require the most attention, reading about other people’s experiences tend to have a positive impact on our own. Sometimes it takes feeling a sense of normality and connecting with someone through familiarities to help us move on and become worthy of the bigger picture.

These four self-help books cover a broad range of topics applicable to women’s lives, and offer sage advice on how to rise above them. Be sure to check them out— it’s time to broaden your horizons and allow something other than your phone screen to captivate your attention. Aim for the mentality that you can conquer every challenge you’re faced with, with poise and assurance, starting today!

1. You Are A BadA**  by Jen Sincero— I tend to be picky about the books I invest myself in, they need to be inspiring and smart, yet comical and entertaining, a combo which is rare to find, but always a winner once you come across it. This refreshing how-to guide does just that! By the end of You Are a Badass, you’ll understand why you are how you are, how to love what you can’t change, how to change what you don’t love, and how to kick some serious ass.

“It’s a self-help book that made me realize I can be powerful.” —Style Guru Samantha Neira

2. Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur— This #1 New York Times Bestseller is a collection of poetry and prose about survival. About the experience of violence, abuse, love, loss, and femininity, taking readers through a journey of the most bitter moments in life and finding sweetness in them because there is sweetness everywhere if you are just willing to look.

“I could feel this book in my bones, each page spoke to me spiritually and truly helped to get me through a difficult time in my life, and that’s exactly what author Rupi Kaur hoped her writing could do.”  —Style Guru Gabrielle Scherer

3. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz— This practical guide to personal freedom reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, The Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform our lives to a new experience of true happiness and love.

“This book puts your problems into perspective and shows you how to forgive not only others, but also yourself. You feel totally empowered after reading it.” —Style Guru Norah Murphy

4. The Happiness Project by Gretchen Ruben— In this #1 New York Times Bestseller, Gretchen Rubin noticed that she was letting life pass her by, and wasn’t paying attention to the things that really matter the most. Sound familiar? Because of this, she dedicated a year of her life to enhancing her quality of living and kept track of her adventures along the way— in hopes of inspiring readers (like us) to find more fulfillment in their own lives.

“This book will inspire you to take advantage of every opportunity and train your mind to enjoy the little things that make life sweeter.” —Style Guru Jordan Shiley

So don’t think of it as “Why do I need someone else to tell me how to live my life?” Look to it as a push to bring you closer to your desired destiny. Just a chapter a day can make all the difference in how you see yourself and the world around you.

These Perks of Social Media Will Actually Advance Your Career

As millennials, social media absorbs hours of our daily lives, depicting the warped virtual reality we live in. And while our first notion may tie to stalking irrelevant whereabouts on Snap Map or living vicariously through celebs on Instagram, these platforms shockingly advance our careers as much as they do our social lives.

Technology grants you and your personal brand the opportunity to draw recruiters right to your virtual door in terms of internships, brand collaborations, and even job offers. So next time you’re feeling ashamed of your virtual addiction it’s important to remember: you’re just being a girl boss and it’s all about how you invest your time.

Don’t sell yourself short, keep scrolling to recognize these four departments and be thoughtful of them through every social binge— you’ll surely be recognized. (Photo via @lovelyykelly)

Inspiration Whether aimlessly scrolling or on a mission, new thoughts regarding style, beauty, and brands are gained through every double tap experience. Thanks to social media we’re given endless feeds of content to open our minds to new ideas and information. These impressions have a peculiar way of molding us into the unique people we are today, and in a way mirror our minds. It’s a relationship so often took for granted, but the inspiration has an inevitable impact.

Information Social media can go both ways, either you share your personal qualities with the world, or you utilize your resources to learn about company qualities you’re interested in. Following corporations on social media can give you an inside look into their culture, clients, and work, which can be used to your advantage when it comes to cover letters and interviews. As long as you’re connecting in a meaningful way on social media, by the time you get to the interview, they should feel like they already know you. So always be smart of what info you put out there, and never post anything that’ll jeopardize your character. (Photo via @thatchiclex)

Marketing Every opportunity you take to enhance your personal brand is valuable, and social media platforms are simply channels to express your voice and flush creative content with the world. It’s your job to simultaneously facilitate new opportunities by recognizably creating awareness and familiarity for both new and existing connections. In other words, it’s important to set the same professional tone on all social platforms, for your friends, followers, and future employers. Save the crazy weekend shenanigans for your camera roll.

Networking Prior to social media, creating a professional network was challenging. Now we’re fortunate enough to create relationships across the world with the click of a button. LinkedIn allows you to connect with hundreds of people in your industry, which allows the ability to yield some pretty great results for your career. It’s a modern and innovative concept, combining the realm of social media with the job market. You simply post your experience, education information, and skills just as you would on a résumé and boom, you’re on the radar. So if you’re not already a part of “the world’s largest professional network,” you’re only capping your potential. Go make a your profile and make it a goal to establish 500 meaningful connections within your first year. You’ll thank yourself later. (Photo via @thatchiclex)

How To Get From Where You Are To Where You Want To Be

There are certain experiences everyone goes through in college. Some, like late night pizza and pulling all-nighters, are more widely discussed (or posted on social) than others. No matter how “put together” you may appear, there will be a moment (or more likely, moments) where you feel, well, a bit lost. There is rarely someone who knows exactly who they are, who they want to be, and even more so how to bridge the gap between the two.

These moments of unknowing are not without merit. Think about it: you leave high school and are thrown into a world full of new people, opportunities, and freedom. It’s as intimidating as it is invigorating, and for many, it’s a time devoted to truly discovering your full potential and becoming the person you aspire to be.

With the real world approaching faster than ever, many of us are completely avoiding the thought of adulting and being a real person. Instead, we’re using the last few semesters we have to expand our minds, to find ourselves, and pave the way toward our futures. So if you’re anything like us, and recognize the small gap between where you are and where you want to be, what’s stopping you?

Here’s six steps to bring you closer to your desired destiny. (Photo via @samanthaneira)

Love Yourself— Self love is the first step toward a positive mentality and future. And while our brains are always so critical of failure, it’s important to train our minds to instead, be grateful. So often we find ourselves envying others that we forget the personal talents, beauty, and brilliance we’re made up of. So it’s important to remember, on both on and off days, to admire how special you are when you look in the mirror. You are your own soulmate. (Photo via @jaidabrinkley)

Set Goals— It’s easy to forget to make time to catch up with yourself, process where you’re at, and recognize where you want to be. So establishing a plan, making a list, and setting goals is key. With ambition, comes accomplishments.

Challenge Yourself— Although your comfort zone is dreamy af, nothing ever seems to grow there, and as an experience-hungry millennial, you’re crazy if you don’t take every opportunity you’re given and make the most of it. Your 20s are prime time for risky, unstable decision-making and putting yourself out there is all part of the awkward discovery. Whether that means breaking out of your shell and traveling to new territory or finally publishing a personal piece after years of preparation; no matter the circumstances, you’ll be surprised with what you learn about yourself in the process. (Photo via @luxbylily)

Use Your Resources— Universities offer thousands of options right at your fingertips, so why not take advantage? You aren’t paying thousands of dollars just to nap in-between classes. Instead, take a detour and stop in the career expo department for extra advice on your resume; having a bad day? drop by the counseling center to clear your head and gain a professional perspective; or simply join a new club on campus and get involved. The options are endless, just grab an extra cup of coffee and look for them.

Be Present— As tempting as it is, putting down your phone and exposing yourself in the moment can be so rewarding, giving you the opportunity to learn from the people around you and gain as much insight as the world has to offer. So next time you’re out, keep social media to a minimum, and live out loud. It seems so simple, but is forgotten so frequently. (Photo via @lovelyykelly)

Let Go— While every relationship appears to be made up of good intensions, some strip you of the best version of yourself along the way. Negativity has a way of dragging you backwards instead of forwards, and you simply don’t have time for that. Don’t set yourself on fire to keep others warm. Relationships involve mutual appreciation, and although your heart wants to see the best in everyone, your wellbeing is a priority above all. So know your boundaries, and never compromise a positive headspace for a toxic connection.

No matter what place you’re at in your journey, be easy, take your time, and remember, you are coming home…. to yourself. It’s time to start living, and spend time just doing you.

How To Do More In Less Time

Summer means endless times to relax, right? Hardly! Our weekdays are spent trying to cram workouts into packed internship and work schedules (and usually failing), while weekends are devoted to running errands, trying to meet our social obligations, and, oh, maybe sleeping as well. No matter how diverse our personal and professional lives may be, 24-hours never seems to satisfy the infamous demands of ‘adulting.’ But at what time do we actually enjoy ourselves? Good question.

Modern life is so overwhelming that when someone says we need to manage our time better, we simply think, “What time?” That’s where we come in. Welcome to “Time Management 101” for the fashionably late. It’s time to clear your sched, and master these six ways to maximize your time. Think: stress less, live more (drops mic).

(Photo via @alliesarachene)

1—Don’t Multi-Task: This is the number one productivity killer. Don’t toggle between checking your email to writing a paper to streaming Netflix. Stick to the old-fashioned art of taking it one step at a time and you’re guaranteed to get more done.

2—Schedule: Keep track of your commitments with daily to-do lists. Not only will they help maintain your sanity, but they’ll have your back through every mind-numbing “what am I forgetting”  moment. Go-getter tip: peep one step further and schedule every hour of your day so you don’t, for instance, spend four hours vaguely working on a few things rather than one hour to cross a specific task off your list. (Photo via @stylezlinz)

3—Unplug: Don’t let your ex’s Instagram notifications distract you from your goals. Take advantage of airplane mode and disconnect from the digital world entirely while working. Digital detoxes are good for your soul and schedule.

4—Say No (When Necessary): Instead of spending the bulk of your time doing things you don’t really want to do, learn how to cut the cord. It’s your life; so commit your time to things that make YOU happy.  (Photo via @rachelmallow)

5—Meditate: Declutter your brain instead of letting your anxious thoughts run and ruin your day. If you’re one to drift off into everyday worries, try making time for meditation so you can enjoy the present. Actually taking 15 minutes in the morning to find calm will keep you more focused and productive during the day.

6—Sleep: Not sleeping breaks your focus and makes it impossible to function optimally. So if you want to make the most of everyday, prioritize your nights and devote at least eight hours to your bed. (Photo via @gabscherer)

How To Network if Networking Feels Weird to You

Let’s face it— avoiding creepy, desperado vibes when ‘adulting’ and putting yourself out there can be extremely tricky in the business world today. Unfortunately, there’s a fine line between the two; and in terms of networking, it’s important to do it tastefully or forever face the career consequences.

How do you build career-oriented relationships without committing social suicide? How do you make an already unnatural situation smooth and effortless? If you’re clueless in this department, that’s where we come in. Welcome to Networking 101 for the awkward and uncomfortable (we’ve all been here).

Here’s five tips to help you navigate networking like a pro, or at least help you fake it till you make it:

1—BUILD RELATIONSHIPS BEFORE YOU NEED THEM: Nothing screams desperate more than a random reach-out your senior year of college with an obvious cry for career help. In order to network with the least amount of personal pain, do yourself a favor and keep up with your connections regularly throughout your four years of college. Every few months check-in to say hey and maintain a friendly two-way  relationship. The more genuine you are, the more you’ll benefit down the road. (Photo via @alexadmendoza)

2—USE SOCIAL MEDIA: There’s so many opportunities right at your fingertips, so why not take advantage of them? LinkedIn is an obvious tool to showcase your talents and experience, but depending on your field, Instagram may deem even more useful. In other words, it’s important to set the same professional tone on all social platforms, for your friends, parents, followers, and future employers. Always be smart when it comes to social networking, and never post anything that’ll jeopardize your character, AKA isolate all crazy weekend shenanigans in your camera roll, instead  of on your public feed. (Photo via @emmamejlstrup)

3—ASK QUESTIONS YOU ACTUALLY WANT THE ANSWERS TO: Be thoughtful, do your research beforehand, and save your precious conversation time for the juicy info a Google search won’t provide you. This is an easy way to show your interest and stand out in the crowd without having to physically do  anything. Plus, you’ll actually walk away from the conversation with valuable information to help you move forward. A win-win  in the networking handbook.

4—FOLLOW UP: When you meet someone at a dinner or networking event and exchange contact information, be sure to follow up with them the very next day. Following up is pretty much what distinguishes a real connection from a fake connection. Although millennials take this as a “We followed each other on Instagram” moment, simply going the extra mile and letting them know “It was nice to meet you” will be noticed. In the networking game full of thousands of faces, it’s easy to lose track. So next time think to yourself, “Why even bother if you’re not going to stay in touch?” while pressing send.

5— BE CONFIDENT: I speak from experience when I say, do not let your nerves get the best of the conversation. Been there, (embarrassed myself), done that. Odds are, the professionals have been in your position, feel for you, and are looking to help you in every way possible, but communication really is key. First impressions are everything, so it’s important to bring your A game in every opportunity you’re given. The more confidence you radiate, the better picture you portray. And although overcoming the struggle is real, your future self will thank you for sure. (Photo via @alexadmendoza)

So whether you already have your dream job or you’re trying to make the right connections to find that job, networking is a part of life— you might as well make the most of it along the way, right?

Is Personal Style Really a Thing Anymore?

One of the hardest questions any fashion-enthusiast is asked is, “So what’s your personal style?” We want to think the answer to this question is impossible to convey. How can you define years of testing and trying trends, making questionable clothing choices, and finding your fashion groove into a single word?

Although you’re individual style is one-of-a-kind, the reality is we all tend to still fall into one fashion niche or another. This doesn’t make you generic—far from it, in fact. Having a definable sense of style shows that you are confident in your fashion choices.

So the question remains, “So what’s your personal style?” We’re breaking down the major style profiles so the next time you are asked the aforementioned question, you can’t confidently (and stylishly) respond accordingly.

(Photo via @maddyhaller)

1—THE CLASSICISTS. Your wardrobe consists of simple staple pieces that never go out of style. You appreciate tradition, and rely on pieces proven to stand the test of time. So here’s to every foolproof white T-shirt, blazer, and trouser that has had your back in every style crisis to date. It’s truly an on-going love story. (Photo via @livingkendralauren)

2—THE BOHEMIANS. Here lies the free-spirited, thrifty style setters with an undoubted affinity for artisanal pieces with authentic details. From earthy, embroidered masterpieces to retro bell bottoms, you embrace every aspect of your modern day flower child mantra with ease. (Photo via @kalynnelizabeth)

3—THE MAVERICKS. New, bold territory is your guilty pleasure. If you’re part of this fearless fashion-forward group you’re not afraid to experiment with new trends and make a statement. You don’t follow the pack, you’re looking for pieces nobody has to start your own trends (and people follow you!) (Photo via @mmoor)

4—THE MINIMALISTS. If sleek, simple shapes and a monochrome, toned-down palette hit home, you’re a minimalist. Here, black is your best friend. You believe the no-frills hue always works, keeping your look smart and sharp for every occasion. (Photo via @gabscherer)

5—THE SPORTY ELITE. Athleisure rules your world and reworking vintage logos and taking cues from the runways has officially become your forte. Opting for sporty separates with old school-meets-new-school appeal keeps you looking chicer than ever both at the gym and on the streets. (Photo via @typicaltuyen)

6—THE WILDCARDS. You can’t fit in when you’re custom made, so classification is not always key. If you’re style is changing by the day, keep surprising us. You keep fashion alive, and (enviously) pull off every style like a pro. Props to you, Fashionista. Keep grindin’.
