How To Wear Black Denim in the Summer

Black is probably the easiest color to style because of how versatile it is. But when the weather gets warmer, it can be a bit more difficult to style. Dark shades attract heat, so we are told to avoid black in the summer as much as possible. I’m sure we don’t all listen to that rule (and maybe regret it later). Denim is also hard to style in the heat, so many Fashionistas avoid black jeans when the temperature rises. But I think I have mastered how to wear black denim in the summer, and with these three tips you can too!

1—Go for a high-waisted pair. I know this may seem like a minor detail, but it really makes a difference. Having high-waisted jeans means that you can wear crop tops, and you have the option of tucking shirts in a flattering way. Crop tops are a staple in the summer. With high-waisted jeans you can wear crop tops and still be a bit more covered, and it creates better proportions for a pleasing look.

2—Pair with light tones. Again, this may seem obvious as well, but it’s something worth mentioning. All black is always super chic, and if you can handle it in the heat, then by all means do it. But to make your dark denim more summer appropriate, look for light shades when choosing tops. This creates a nice contrast and breaks up the look, giving the eye something interesting to look at.

3—All gold everything (accessories that is). I love gold jewelry and brown accessories in the summer. When the sun hits them just right, they look so effortless and cool. Brown shoes and bags aren’t what you typically think of when it comes to black and white outfits, but in the summer it works. The brown and tan shades can soften the harsh contrast, and they look great with a tan!

With these three tips, you can rock black denim effortlessly this summer. It may seem intimidating at first, but when you do it right, it is oh so very worth it!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Game On

The game of baseball is as American as apple pie or a can of Coca-Cola, and it is a staple in the summer months. Spending a summer night at the ballpark of your choice with friends or family is a good time and great memories just waiting to happen. The stadium is filled with people representing their favorite teams and city and because of this, one’s outfit can become “basic” so to speak, but this Fashionisto’s look is anything but!

Sporty chic and athletic wear has been a trend that has stuck around for a while now and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Before recent years, it was looked down upon to be seen wearing a sports jersey to anywhere but a sporting event. Now it has become the norm and can add a cool and unique element to any outfit!

This Fashionisto is rocking a Kansas City Monarchs jersey, which is a team from the Negro Baseball League of the ’60s and since this team is no longer around makes for an interesting and conversation starting focal point for the look. Some would just pair this piece with a simple shorts and sneaker combo but this Fashionisto took it a step further by balancing the vintage feel of the jersey with the trendiness of acid-washed skinny jeans along with his classic Vans sneakers. He threw on a tropical backpack that adds another fun element to the outfit and seems to pull together this “outside-the-box” ensemble.

What’s your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I find it important to dress how you feel. This Monarch jersey represents an important part of my city’s history and I’m always proud to wear it and I’m never afraid to spice it up and modernize it as much as I can.”

WHAT TO WEAR: Vacation

School is out and summer is here! For some, summer means work and summer classes. For others it means endless free time and binge-watching any new show you can find on Netflix. But I think we can all agree that it’s the perfect time for a vacation! Whether you’re jet-setting around the globe or simply taking a road trip with friends, the clothes one chooses to wear on these excursions can sometimes make or break the whole experience.

This Fashionista decided on an orange and white printed romper with a braided brown belt cinched around the waist. Rompers and jumpsuits are great to bring on vacation because they are quick to throw on and make you look put together in an effortless way. She also opted for white sandals which are super cute, but also comfortable enough to walk around in all day and explore any new city.

For accessories, this Fashionista kept it very simple. Her white bag is the perfect size to store everything from her phone, to souvenirs she is bringing back home for friends and family. Of course, you can’t forget the sunglasses. Aviators are a classic style and will go with just about any outfit this Fashionista can think of while on her trip.

One Simple Change: To transform this romper into something more night appropriate for going out with friends, swap out the casual sandals for a nude wedge heel or platform sandals. Heels make any look stand out a bit more and are perfect for any nighttime event!

STYLE GURU BIO: Jasmine Cole

My name is Jasmine Cole, and I’m so excited to be a part of CollegeFashionista for the first time this summer! I’m majoring in Textile and Apparel Management at the University of Missouri and will be a junior this fall. From a young age I’ve always loved fashion and knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Putting together pieces for others and myself always came naturally to me and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else.

As for my personal style it is forever changing depending on my mood, the weather and just about any other factor you can think of. My closet consists of everything from lace and crochet tops to concert T-shirts and thrifted flannels. I think my closet is so diverse because I get inspiration from just about anywhere. I owe it to my indecisiveness as to why my closet has so much variety and the fact that I’m always up for a challenge when it comes to styling different pieces. My style inspirations vary from Rihanna and Zoe Kravitz, to multiple fashion bloggers and my fellow classmates. I’ve always believed that you can never have too many influences (or in this case, closets) to draw from.

Besides fashion, I’m obsessed with makeup, music and photography–pretty basic, I know. Binge-watching makeup tutorials on YouTube is one of my favorite hobbies and concert venues are like my second home. I love finding new artists to listen to and nothing compares to live music with friends or family. I took my first film photography class in my sophomore year of high school and since then, I’ve never looked back. Finding the beauty in normal, everyday things and capturing those moments is something I’m extremely passionate about and it’s always fun to share those moments with others.

With all that being said, I’m really looking forward to this summer as well as being apart of CollegeFashionista. My goal is to give at least someone a little fashion inspiration with my posts and can’t wait to start this journey with my fellow Fashionistas/os.
