COLLEGEFASHIONISTA NEXT: Kellen Fitzgerald

When Style Gurus are with the site for a while, I begin to feel like I know them on a personal level. I see how they grow as writers, photographers and even Fashionistas. Kellen Fitzgerald was a Style Guru at Fordham for an impressive NINE semesters with CollegeFashionista. Besides being a Style Guru, Kellen also was a marketing intern in our offices. In fact, it was that very position and a chance encounter that lead Kellen down the path to her current role as the online marketing coordinator at Ann Taylor. While we miss her talents and charisma here at CollegeFashionista, we are thrilled to see her thriving in her new role at Ann Taylor. Read about Kellen’s journey below!

It’s ironic, but more so appropriate, to mention that I wouldn’t be able to write this had it not been for my experience at CollegeFashionista. I can trace my career breadcrumbs back to my very first day as CollegeFashionista’s marketing intern, when I arrived at the office just to dash out the door to a fairly impromptu photo shoot at the Ann Taylor studio. Amy was working with Ann Taylor on a new ‘day-to-night’ campaign and I had been lucky enough to get swept up in her fashion-packed schedule.

With no one under the age of 22 at an arm’s length, Amy and the photography team made use of the awe-struck intern in the corner and decided to throw me into the frame (figuratively, of course). Before I even had time to blink, people were pinning, spinning and styling me in Ann Taylor from every angle. This was followed by my feeble attempt to look calm and collected in a slew of street style photographs. But nevertheless, countless frames and footwear changes later, I left the first day of my internship at CollegeFashionista in total elation.

A few months later, Amy was kind enough to bring me along to the Ann Taylor press previews and holiday events, and eventually recommended that I apply for an internship in their marketing department. Knowing that she would only recommend the best of the bunch, I took her suggestion to heart and soon found myself back in the Ann Taylor office that summer, and then again after graduation—but this time for good.

After itching to make it back to Ann for the remainder of my college career, I now work as the online marketing coordinator for the Ann Taylor brand. From brainstorming to briefing, I see our digital marketing campaigns from idea to execution. Whether we’re supporting sales with promotional marketing, edging in editorials or revamping a lookbook, my day-to-day duties all ensure that our daily mass marketing reaches the client with our best foot forward.

Although the ever-changing cadence of digital marketing can seem endless at times, I am constantly learning and adapting to new ways to present a brand voice in a way that’s not only compelling for clients, but innovative enough to distinguish us from our competitors—a task that I certainly would never have been able to grasp had it not been for the digitally-forward campaigns I was exposed to at CollegeFashionista.

So although my time at CollegeFashionista has concluded, I still feel its influence on my work every day and could not be more grateful for the opportunities it has opened up for me. Though short and sweet, it certainly feels great to be back!

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Sahar Bhatti

This week’s Fashionista is all business in black, but she doesn’t let her personal style slip to the way side. Brightening up this black-on-black ensemble, this Fashionista pairs deep red nails with coordinating pumps. With a python print belt and multi-metal watch, this nine to five Fashionista is perfectly professional without sacrificing personality. Given the atmosphere of many work environments, it’s often tempting to stick to tradition. But follow in this Fashionista’s footsteps and add subtle hints of style with detailed accessories, a statement color or even a punch of vibrant nail polish.

Name: Sahar Bhatti

Major: Business Administration

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: How do you think your personality shows itself via the way you dress?

Sahar Bhatti: I wear what I’m comfortable in. I like to wear things that are cozy and I usually like a neutral or rosy palette. I think those colors sort of show my personality.

CF: How do you incorporate your personal style into your professional attire?

SB: I like to dress up my work wear with my accessories and small details. I normally try to add some color to the typical pant suit even though I didn’t do much of that today!

CF: What are a few items in your wardrobe you couldn’t go without?

SB: Black leggings, my watch, a circle scarf and a cozy sweater.

CF: How do you think you’ll brighten up your business wear for spring and summer?

SB: Definitely a lot of floral prints and colored blazers. I really like the bold and delicate florals mixed together.

How To: Get this Fashionista’s looking by brightening up black-on-black pant suit with statement accessories. Don’t underestimate the importance of a good fit either; be sure to create a flattering silhouette with the right cut. For more professional occasions, opt for a navy or black suit with colorful yet subtle accessories. To make a statement, try opting for bright pumps or neon statement necklace.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Suzy Sikorski

This week’s Fashionista’s style is more than personal; it’s playful. She borrows the best of color, pattern, fabric and fit to create a stylistic vision that’s inarguably all her own. This winter-friendly look is not only fashionable, but also practical given the brutal temperatures hitting NYC. Combining the elegance of a quaint silk scarf with the flare of fingerless gloves and chunky legwarmers, this Fashionista’s layers create a bohemian look that battles the cold to boot. From color combination to bold accessories, this ensemble will surely steal attention throughout the gray winter months.

Name: Suzy Sikorski

Year: Freshman

Major: International Political Economics

CollegeFashionista: If you had to whittle down your wardrobe to five items, what would they be?

Suzy Sikorski: My Hermes scarf, gold hoops, legwarmers, my Louis Vuitton crossover bag and this Egyptian hieroglyphic necklace I always wear.

CF: Although you love layering for winter, what’s your favorite season to dress for and why?

SS: Definitely summer because you can wear a lot of loose clothing. I love bright and colorful clothing, and with a tan it always looks better!

CF: Describe your personal style in three words.

SS: Avant garde, chic, sophosticated.

CF: Are there any style statements you’re dying to try this season?

SS: I’ve never tried this but I want to pair a high waisted skirt with different types of patterned leggings or something.

CF: Has living in New York City had an affect on the way you approach your style?

SS: Definitely. I see so many people from all over the world that all dress so differently. I love seeing how the Europeans dress especially. When I went to France I loved seeing how they treated style and how interestingly they dress.

How To: Get this Fashionista’s look by doubling up on bright scarves. Pair bright accessories with an oversized coat and cozy leg warmers to combat the cold.

CollegeFashionista X American Eagle Outfitters: Day 6

As the temperatures begin to rise, so too do the hemlines. And with spring approaching fast, it’s only natural to have mini lengths on the mind. From the everlasting denim shorts to the up and coming billowy bloomers, shorts are appearing in every length, fabric and fashion. But if you’re not ready to brave the bright bottoms or loud prints just yet, American Eagle Outfitters presents the perfect collection of spring shorts.

Keeping the cut of our favorite classics and combining them with one-of-a-kind washes and colors, the American Eagle Outfitters shortie collection provides the ultimate option for transitioning into spring.

With a tireless affinity for black, I opted for these classic chino shorts. Perfect for fancying up with a pair of pumps or dressing down with basic flats, these shorts are a spring staple every closet should include. To make the transition from brisk to balmy weather, I paired the versatile shorts with a basic graphic tee and never-fail flats. Tied up with a studded plaid shirt around the waist and minimal accessories, this look is an easy A for lazy weekends or the early morning rush to class.

To spruce up your springtime shorts collection, check out the American Eagle Outfitters shortie collection and hike up your hemlines.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Colleen McCormick

This week’s Fashionista finds the perfect combination of fur and floral with her winter-meets-spring ensemble. She finds often the best outfits are the ones that take courage to wear, and her style certainly reflects this stylish spunk.
Name: Mary Colleen McCormick
Major: Visual Art and Communications
Year: Senior
CollegeFashionista: What aspects of your personality reflect through the way you dress?
Colleen McCormick: I consider myself a strange and creative person so I try and get funky with the clothes I pick out. I layer a lot so it’s all about weird combinations.
CF: Are there any style statements you’ve been wanting to try out this season?
CM: Faux fur coats. I bought this dark green coat that I’ve been trying to wear often but it’s such a bold statement it’s hard to work up the courage to wear it sometimes.
CF: If you had to whittle down your wardrobe to five items what would they be?
CM: Motorcyle pants, combat boots, a floral shirt, a denim vest and an infinity scarf.
CF: If you could borrow from anyone’s closet, who would it be?
CM: Ellie Goulding.
CF: Describe your personal style in three words.
CM: Girly, biker, earthy.
CF: What do you like most about fashion?
CM: It’s one of my favorite hobbies. I have the opportunity to dress up every morning and it doesn’t stop there. I get to wear my creation for the rest of the day. It’s something that motivates me to get out of bed.
How To: Get This Fashionista’s look by pairing a whimsical print with this season’s favorite fur vest. For a more conservative version, pair the vest with nautical stripes or a solid top.

FASHIONISTO SPOTLIGHT: Kevin Fitzgerald

This week’s Fashionisto combines comfort with color play to create a layered look you’re bound to love. Graduate student Kevin Fitzgerald says being comfortable in one’s clothing is extremely important. And although we often see wearability sacrificed for the sake of stylishness, this Fashionisto manages to hit the sweet spot between practicality and panache.

Pairing steel blue denim with a deep maroon sweater, Kevin mixes warm and cool colors effortlessly. Finished with a coordinating blazer and shoe combination, this Fashionisto’s earthy accessories not only add a pinch of personality to the look, but they also create the ultimate winter palette.

Name: Kevin Fitzgerald

Major: History

Year: Graduate Student

CollegeFashionista: If you had to whittle down your wardrobe to five items, what would they be?

Kevin Fitzgerald: A white V-neck shirt, white Chuck Taylors, colored Levis jeans, my brown Members Only jacket and running shorts.

CF: Describe your personal style in three words.

KF: Understated, comfortable, worn.

CF: Is there an item or trend you want to try right now?

KF: So about a year ago I bought this cool-looking, old, washed-out Levi’s jean jacket from a thrift store. I wear it every so often, and whenever I do, I can’t help feeling kind of like an idiot. I guess I’d like to try to wear that more often—without the whole feeling like an idiot thing.

CF: What’s your favorite season to dress for and why?

KF: Being a distance runner, I’m used to not wearing a lot of clothes—short shorts, a T-shirt and running shoes. I feel like I’ve come to enjoy wearing less or lighter clothing. So I guess summer would be my favorite only because it means I don’t have to layer up on clothes. I feel like during the summer I can actually move around in what I’m wearing.

How To: Get this Fashionisto’s look by layering earth-toned staples together. Try pairing a subtley colored pair of denim with suede desert boots. To keep your palette interesting, try straying from the classic navy blazer and opt for a dark green or tan shade instead.

STYLE GURU BIO: Kellen Fitzgerald

Hello! My name is Kellen Fitzgerald and I’m a Fordham University senior majoring in communications and minoring in visual arts. Along with various fashion-focused activities on my daily agenda, I also serve as captain of Fordham’s track and field team. Aside from writing as a CF Style Guru since my freshman year, I’ve also spent the last few years as CollegeFashionista’s marketing intern, an opportunity that has provided a glimpse into the hard work and inspiration behind CF. As I continue to work with CF and witness its remarkable progress, I not only have the privilege of being a part of an extremely passionate and creative team, but I also have the opportunity to be constantly inspired by the students featured on the site.

I would describe my wardrobe as youthful, clean and classic. I’m a firm believer that comfort and elegance should not be mutually exclusive, and as a college student in New York City, I’m constantly learning how to personalize contemporary designs in a way that not only looks good, but more importantly, feels good. Personal style is certainly an evolutionary process that has taught me, above all else, to wear what feels right.  Expressing one’s personality by way of fashion can only resonate when it’s genuine. Simply put, dress for yourself.

To give and receive inspiration is an opportunity to be valued, and by sharing the charisma and creativity of the Fashionistas/os at Fordham, I hope to instill this same appreciation in the readers.
