ALL IN THE DETAILS: Totally Vintage

Spring has officially sprung, and it has been a gorgeous spring here at Kent State so far! All over campus I have seen some totally cute outfits inspired by the amazing weather we’ve been having.

This specific Fashionista caught my eye, and I just can’t stop thinking about her adorable ‘50s-inspired look. It’s perfect for the sunny spring weather, and the pastel colors are one of this springs top trends. It’s such an easy look, too; the basis of the whole outfit is a short sleeve top and a circle skirt. I’ve seen a lot of people attempt outfits based like hers, but never has one stood out to me as much as this!

Her top is totally incredible. The pink and white checkered pattern makes a subtle statement without being too overpowering, and the pearl detail at the top is killer. It adds such a nice feminine touch that gives the look something soft and classy. The sleeves remind me of something that a Disney princess might wear, and that sweetheart neckline completes the top and really shows off the ’50s inspiration. Pair it with a bold patterned skirt, and the outfit gives off an edgier vibe that shows off this Fashionista’s personality. The simple cut of the circle skirt keeps the pattern from becoming too complicated and helps tie together the easy and breezy look that the ‘50s usually has.

Her shoes, while simple, are so stylish. The sleek color and shine of the gray shoe is extremely fun and the strap gives it a kind of Mary Jane look. Her hair is super adorable and super simple to do, and the loose curls make the outfit look mature and collected, am I right? I am forever taking style inspiration from the ’50s, and I know this Fashionista has nailed it, too!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Flower Power

Attention all Fashionistas, who are as obsessed with flowers as I am: this article is all about how you can deck yourself head to toe in those beautiful and fantastically smelling things! Let’s be clear, I definitely don’t mean real flowers, but you can still get the same gorgeous effect from this Fashionista’s springtime outfit.

Her dress is straight up gorgeous. It’s such a classy and trendy piece that demands the attention of everyone around. The print is fabulous and gives the wearer the ability to mix and match so many accessories with it. The neckline is the perfect amount of plunge that says “I’m totally fun and super trendy without being too showy,” and the wide bell sleeves give the look a boho vibe that gives this dress the option of being a casual piece as well.

Her floral accessories are both beautiful and they don’t distract at all from the print on the dress, they add to it perfectly. The headband and bracelet show that you can add specific items from a pattern and it will all flow together very elegantly. The trick is to stay small in size and similar in color. The headbands flowers are rather tiny compared to the print of the dress, and are a perfect color to match. The bracelet’s flowers are smaller than the pattern as well, and the golden color is a wonderful touch because it keeps everything in the warmer color range.

The necklace, shoes, and purse all add on to the many colors incorporated in the pattern of the dress, and add their own flare of style. The necklace helps trail the eye down the dress and onto the outfit as a whole. The bag is still large enough to carry all the necessities (lipstick, blotting sheets, wallet, etc.) while still being mature and trendy at the same time. It looks like it’s a purse for a stylish college girl and not a mom who has to haul kids’ essentials around with her. The shoes are extremely in season, and one of the top trends I see right now. The lace-up heel is a hot item to invest in, and I don’t see it fading away anytime soon.

This outfit is the perfect combination of boho, chic, and elegance. I hope you can get as much inspiration for this spring as I did!

WHAT TO WEAR: Friday Night Fun

Friday nights. They’re the night we look forward to all week, they’re usually filled with fun, friends, and fantastic fashion. But, sometimes picking out the perfect cute and comfortable outfit can be tricky. That’s why when I saw this Fashionista’s killer look, I knew it would be the perfect example on how to be casual and comfy, while still looking killer.

The secret to picking out an outfit like this one is having a statement piece. One part of the outfit that really pops out from the rest of the garments keeps you looking interesting while still being casual and not too overdressed. This Fashionista’s statement piece is her plaid shirt. The plaid pattern is mostly black and white, but it has some subtle hints of red that adds a nice little pop of color. The shirt is also off-the-shoulder, which gives her look a hint of playfulness and emphasizes that she’s ready for some fun! The drape of her shirt flows and is fun, which gives her outfit another cute detail. I absolutely love how cute and simple her over the shoulder crop is, I might just have to go buy one myself!

Now, the rest of her outfit is all the same color, black. This can be something that makes the outfit lose its effect, but this Fashionista made sure to incorporate it in a way that kept the outfit looking fresh and exciting. The skinny jeans give her a slim, tall silhouette that really makes her look like a rock star. Plus, black skinny jeans are so in right now. Her shoes, while simple, are a very nice touch to this outfit. The heeled booties are a trend that does not go out of style, and they are still comfortable enough to walk in on a night out. The black velvet choker is an extremely hot item right now, because you can wear it with almost any look and you instantly become edgy. Finally, her bag is an amazing detail to the outfit. Not only is it a fabulous bag on its own, but it’s also a Michael Kors. A black MK bag will forever be in style and extremely gorgeous. And it will add a fabulous touch to any look you want to pair it with.

STYLE GURU BIO: Keller Martin

I love experimenting with clothes, makeup, and hairstyles almost as much as I love spaghetti and taking naps (which is a lot). There’s this quote I found on Pinterest once, and it honestly changed my life: “Dress like you’re already famous.” I love it and I most definitely live by it. I never leave without a fierce pair of shoes and my favorite lipstick shade of the week carefully swiped across my lips.

Right now I’m attending Kent State University and majoring in fashion design. The only paparazzi I encounter are the squirrels running around everywhere (literally all over the place) but they’re still a good audience for me to practice my runway walk. Kent State University is also a great place to find style inspiration because the majority of the campus is a part of the fashion school. There’s just something about being inspired by other Fashionistas that makes trekking across campus in heels so much easier.

I love to take inspiration from all kinds of fashion eras, but right now my favorite is the ’90s. High-waisted mom jeans and crop tops are such a fun outfit to experiment with, and I love seeing the different ways I can wear the outfit. I am also very into thrift shopping and upcycling clothing. I love adding creative new embellishments to old clothes, then you have a piece to wear that’s completely original and something only you own.

I think it’s really important in fashion to experiment and take risks, because you never know when something that seems like it might be really weird could be the next big trend. So go out there, take risks, and be yourself! That’s what I’ve always done and it’s worked pretty well for me so far.
