FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Taylor Kennedy

Every year the question is raised, when is it acceptable to start wearing white? Whether it's white jeans or shorts, this color is a definite warm weather do! I ran into this cheery Fashionista on her birthday looking cheery in her basic white shorts and vibrant fuschia top. With Atlanta's summer heat in full swing, her outfit is not only cute, but also perfect for a long day of classes during this time of year.

Name: Taylor Kennedy

Major: History & English

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: What are you most looking forward to wearing this summer?

Taylor Kennedy: Skirts and wedge heels! Any opportunity I have to wear wedges or heels I take advantage of it.

CF: How would you describe your style?

TK: I would describe it as casual but cute. I’m not always the one wearing dresses to classes, but I’m more of a cute tank top, shorts and sandals kind of girl.

CF: Who is your ultimate girl-crush in terms of fashion? What do you like about her style?

TK: I wouldn’t really say I have one specific crush or style I model my own clothes off of, but I do really like the way Emma Stone and Blake Lively dress. I like the cute and sometimes edgy styles of clothing. If only I had the money to build a wardrobe like theirs!

CF: What is your favorite thing to shop for?

TK: I kind of have an obsession with buying going-out dresses and shoes. Online shopping is my biggest temptation! I love having a tight, colorful dress to wear out on the weekends or cute black dresses to wear to more formal events or date parties. And shoes of all kinds are just my weakness.

CF: Has your style changed at all since coming to college?

TK: Since being at college, I think I have come more into my own style and dressing up a little more than I used to when I was in high school with school uniforms.

How To: Once the warm weather kicks in, it is all about wearing white. This color is great because it is so versatile, and bright summery colors all look perfect paired back to a basic white pant or short. Since white is such a basic color, you have room for imagination with the rest of your outfit. For instance, try a flowy patterned top and flat metallic sandals for an easy and laidback summer look. For nighttime, white jeans and a funky wooden wedge or a brightly colored heel is a definite way to make a statement! Overall, white is the perfect clean color for summertime and can be worn during the day like this Fashionista, or choose a cool cover-up for a day at the beach.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Ellen McCreery

I spotted this week’s Fashionista out and about on this breezy spring day! Her bright red and white striped sweater caught my eye and of course the monogrammed back pocket of her jeans was an added bonus. Despite the colder weather that has come through Atlanta, this Fashionista’s style is still bright and cheerful.

Name: Ellen McCreery

Major: Sociology

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: What has inspired your style the most?

Ellen McCreery: My love for bows and all things feminine really drive my style.

CF: How would you describe your personal style?

EM: Preppy & fun! If you see an abnormally bright outfit in the distance, it’s probably me.

CF: What are your favorite stores to shop at?

EM: I love Lilly Pulitzer and I wear a lot of clothes from Banana Republic.

CF: What outfits/trends are you looking forward to wearing this summer?

EM: I am starting a full time job this summer, so I can’t wait to buy new stylish business clothes.

CF: What are your three favorite items currently in your wardrobe?

EM: I love my boots I got in Italy while studying abroad, my Lilly Pulitzer slub dress and my glittery brown belt.

How To: This Fashionista loves bright colors and patterns which helps define her cheerful and fun sense of style. As long as you are not afraid of color, this look is easy to achieve. Most importantly, start with an item in a new, fun color that you feel comfortable and confident it. Neon pink, yellow and orange are all great hues for summer, and you will definitely make a statement. Once you have decided on your pop of color, the rest of the outfit is simple! Basic dark denim or any neutral colored short or skirt will keep the focus of the outfit on the vibrant color or pattern.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Victoria Weber

As soon as the warm weather arrives, colorful outfits emerge everywhere on campus. It was easy to spot this Fashionista in her fire engine red skinny jeans and dainty lace top. The bright denim definitely takes center stage in this outfit, so she chose to keep the rest of the look simple and neutral. She is not afraid to be bold and experiment with color, and her confidence and sense of style truly shine through!

Name: Victoria Weber

Major: Psychology

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: How do you describe your style?

Victoria Weber: Pretty eclectic—I wear whatever I’m feeling for the day. My wardrobe spans all sorts of styles.

CF: Do your friends from home dress differently than your friends at school, if so, how?

VW: Definitely, I’m from southern California so the style is a lot more beachy and laid-back whereas a lot of people here dress classic preppy.

CF: Since we are in the middle of formal season, do you enjoy getting dressed up for a special event?

VW: Of course! What girl doesn’t?

CF: What are your summer wardrobe essentials?

VW: Gladiator sandals, high-waisted denim shorts, and cropped tops.

CF: What are your favorite trends right now?

VW: Definitely bright pants and shorts and lacey shirts.

CF: Who is your style icon?

VW: Erin Wasson.

How To: This Fashionista’s look is all about experimenting with new colors and trends. If you tend to stick to basic denim and neutral colors, step outside your comfort zone and opt for a great pair of bright skinny jeans. If you are dressing for daytime, be sure to keep the other elements of your outfit simple. Taking a note from our Fashionista, white or ivory always looks great paired with a vibrant color. As for accessories, don’t over do it because you still want to look polished and put together. Try a flat leather sandal for class, or for nighttime you can easily dress up the look with a wrist full of gold bangles and a wooden wedge.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Teresa Morrissey

This Fashionista epitomizes summer style with her printed sundress and flat strappy sandals (her post-spring break tan doesn’t hurt either)! Even after a long day in the Atlanta heat, she looks cool, comfortable and stylish. A sundress is a warm weather essential because you can instantly look put-together without the effort of coordinating an outfit. Paired with simple white sandals and a dainty silver necklace, you can’t go wrong with this look!

Name: Teresa Morrissey

Major: Political Science & Spanish

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: What three words would you use to describe your style?

Teresa Morrissey: Boho-chic, trendy and effortless.

CF: Who is your ultimate celebrity girl crush and what do you love most about her style?

TM: Hands down Blake Lively. She can pull off the all-black low key look while also rocking bright spring and summer neons. Plus, she's dating a total hottie; I’d copy Blake's style in a second if it meant spending some one on one time with Leo or Ryan Reynolds! I also can't forget Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw, she is fashion fearless.

CF: What are you favorite stores or brands?

TM: Urban Outfitters, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Ralph Lauren, Nordstrom, Zara and any cute boutiques I stumble upon!

CF: Is there any item currently on your wish list that you are dying to have?

TM: Keds. Big kids are allowed to wear those too, right?

CF: Now that the warm weather is here to stay, what are your favorite go-to looks for summer?

TM: I have a guilty pleasure for patterned shorts, especially if they're high-waisted. When summer's here to stay I'll pair those bottoms with cute wedges or sandals, a simple top, and some killer jewelry!

How To: To achieve this look, all you need is a cute, colorful sundress. From there, you can dress it up or down to your liking. For daytime, keep it simple and easy with flat sandals and a pretty necklace or pair of earrings. Depending on the color or pattern of the dress, you can experiment with different accessories to bring out your personal style. If you are looking to make a statement, choose a sundress in a bold hue or a unique pattern. A sundress is the perfect additional to any girl’s summer wardrobe because it is such a versatile item that can easily go from day to night. With the perfect sundress, you are ready to soak up sun in style, all summer long.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Cleo Rochat

Cut-off shorts are a summer staple that seem to become more and more popular every year. With the warm weather here to stay, denim shorts are a versatile, must-have item. While many girls choose to keep the look casual with a T-shirt and flip flops, today’s Fashionista adds some flair with a patterned top, ballet flats and a vibrant headband. Even in basic jean shorts, her unique personal style shines through!

Name: Cleo Rochat

Major: Undecided

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: How has your style changed since coming to Emory?

Cleo Rochat: I think since coming to college my style has gotten more independent from other people's. I care more about making my outfit useful for the activities in the day, and less about following other people's lead. It has definitely made style more unique than it was in high school.

CF: How would you describe your personal style?

CR: I think my style reflects my personality — it’s eclectic and fun, yet I like to keep it simple.

CF: What was your most recent splurge item, and why did you decide to finally buy it?

CR: I just bought a nice pair of black heels that I had been eyeing for a while. I know I will get a lot of use out of them, and they go with almost every outfit!

CF: Are there any people or celebrities who inspire your fashion choices?

CR: My best friend from high school has an amazing sense of style. He always helped me put together outfits and challenged me to branch out and be adventurous when adding new items to my wardrobe. Everyone check out his blog!

CF: What is your go-to outfit when you’re tight on time?

CR: Something simple. Usually when I'm running late, I put my hair up and throw on a headband to make the outfit cuter and my hair less messy!

How To: Start with a great pair of denim shorts and your possibilities are endless. Of course, you can keep it cool and casual with a simple t-shirt and sandals, or you can easily add some spunk with a patterned blouse and fun accessories. Although it may seem like every person on campus is wearing cut-off shorts, it is easy to incorporate your unique style. Try an unusual wash or choose a pair with unique details and you will definitely stand out. Accessories are an easy way to transform any outfit, so experiment with a metallic sandal or a bright headband.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Sarah Stuckey

I can’t ever seem to have enough dresses. Every time I go shopping, I always seem to add another frock to my wish list. That is why I loved spotting this Fashionista in this patterned mini dress. Her look is incredibly versatile because it is perfect for a day of classes or even a nice dinner out. She could easily swap her simple ballet flats for boots or heels and dress this look up even more.

Name: Sarah Stuckey

Major: Pre-Business

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: Do you have a favorite brand, clothing store, or designer?

Sarah Stuckey: I really like the designer Max Azria because of his French influence and contemporary style. His brand, BCBGMAXAZRIA, offers affordable designer clothes. I especially love the dresses for their fun colors and classy styles.

CF: How would you describe your style?

SS: My style is pretty preppy. I like wearing simple pieces and accessorizing with jewelry. I also love flowy tops, blazers and colorful dresses.

CF: Has your style changed since coming to college?

SS: Definitely! In high school I had to wear a uniform, so now I have more opportunities to show my style. I started layering more with sweaters, wearing more bold jewelry and investing in new shoes.

CF: Who do you draw your fashion inspiration from? What do you like most about her style?

SS: I really admire Rachel Bilson's style; she always looks super cute and put together. I love that her looks always seem effortless and she is very smart with her accessories.

How To: Sarah’s outfit is great because she looks extremely polished and put together, but by wearing a dress eliminated the stress of picking an outfit. The dress itself makes a statement with its pattern and style, but when paired with a multi-strand gold necklace, her personal style really shines through. This look is perfect for a college student because the long sleeves and flouncy skirt make it appropriate for daytime, regardless of its short hemline. Also, this dress can go from day to night by simply adding a pair of heels and bold accessories. When in doubt, start with a dress and accessorize to your liking!

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Tori Glebocki

I spotted today’s Fashionista walking back to her dorm after a long day of classes. Despite Atlanta’s rapidly rising temperatures, she looks cool, calm and collected. Tori takes advantage of the versatility of the classic white tank top. When paired with an army green skirt, this casual basic is transformed.

Name: Tori Glebocki

Major: Undecided

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your style?

Tori Glebocki: Preppy with a feminine flare.

CF: What is your favorite season to dress for and why?

TG: Spring, because I always look forward to dumping the winter neutrals for some color!

CF: Which celebrity has your dream wardrobe?

TG: Leighton Meester.

CF: Are there any items you are currently dying to have?

TG: I’m always on the prowl for some Dogeared jewelry it’s my favorite because it’s so cute and dainty, and sundresses.

CF: Are there any websites or fashion blogs you turn to for inspiration?

TG: I always love my daily dose of inspiration from thecollegeprepster.com.

How To: Tori’s look is all about the basics with her white tank tucked into a flowy green skirt. To emulate this outfit, begin with something simple like a solid colored T-shirt or tank top. Then, add some flare to the rest of your outfit. Tori chose a skirt in a pretty color with a modern, uneven hemline. When you start with a basic piece, your outfit options are endless! From a printed floral skirt to brightly colored shorts, nearly everything looks good with a white top. As always, have fun with your accessories and shoes. While Tori keeps her look classic and polished with a thin leather belt and neutral flat sandals, a bold statement necklace or colored sandals easily transform any outfit.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Meredith Brockman

I ran into to today’s Fashionista after her sorority’s weekly chapter meeting. While most girls choose to wear sundresses, Meredith stands out in a simple gray maxi dress. Paired with a lightweight white jacket that is perfect for the warm weather, she looks effortlessly cool and also put together.

Name: Meredith Brockman

Major: Biology and Psychology

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: Where do you look for style advice?

Meredith Brockman: I get a lot of outfit ideas off of Pinterest — there are always a lot of great put-together outfits.

CF: With Spring and summer right around the corner, what is your go-to warm weather outfit?

MB: Colorful shorts and a tucked-in collared shirt. Or something with lace!

CF: When you're running low on time are you more likely to throw on gym shorts and run to class or do you risk being a few minutes late in order to make yourself look presentable?

MB: I try to think of outfits before I go to sleep so that I don't have to try on 100 different tops before I leave. I wouldn't wear athletic clothes to class, but I'd throw on a go-to outfit like leggings and a long top.

CF: Were you able to watch the Oscars last weekend? If so, who did you think was the “best dressed” and why?

MB: Yes, I thought that Cameron Diaz looked amazing. I think her hair and make-up complimented her classic dress really well.

How To: Many girls shy away from floor length dresses because they don’t think they can “pull it off.” With the right style and color, a maxi dress is a must for every girl! If you are skeptical about this trend, try a neutral colored dress with a flowy fit. If you are feeling bold, go for a bright color or a vibrant pattern. Maxi dresses are perfect for vacation to throw on after a long day at the beach or the pool. So pick one up before spring break, particularly a jersey version that is easy to pack and also looks great.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Grace Beggins

Spotted leaving lunch with friends, this Fashionista's vibrant green denim brightened up this overcast day. By keeping the rest of her outfit simple with a basic white T-shirt and neutral flats, today’s Fashionista proves you can never go wrong with a little (or a lot) of color.

Name: Grace Beggins

Major: Business and French

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: In three words, how would you describe your style?

Grace Beggins: Preppy, colorful and classic.

CF: Who is your ultimate style icon and why do you love her style?

GB: Blake Lively, because her style is effortless and fun.

CF: Where are your favorite places to shop?

GB: J.Crew, Madewell, Topshop and Calypso.

CF: What are some of your favorite trends right now?

GB: Colored ankle jeans and color-blocking.

CF: Spring is right around the corner, are you excited to transition your wardrobe over from winter?

GB: Yes! I am looking forward to wearing sundresses, pastel colors and swapping my boots for sandals.

How To: For those of you who tend to shy away from color, experiment with new hues gradually. If you are most comfortable in neutrals, try adding an unexpected pop of color with a bright scarf or flats. Also, colored denim is a popular trend that everyone can try. With colors ranging from pastels to vibrant greens and blues, a pair of colored jeans is a great and easy way to brighten up your wardrobe. But remember, when playing with color, it’s best to keep the rest of your look simple to avoid looking overdone.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Danielle Chou

This week’s Fashionista was spotted outside the library on her way to an afternoon study session. With class all day, she proves that comfortable clothing can also be cute and stylish. Danielle combines two popular trends — layers and leggings — which give her a cool and casual look without feeling underdressed.

Name: Danielle Chou

Year: Junior

Major: Anthropology and Human Biology

CollegeFashionista: When you are running late or on the go, what is your go-to outfit that requires very little effort to assemble, but still makes you look put together?

Danielle Chou: Recently I’ve been wearing lululemon leggings, combat boots and a long sleeve chambray (those J.Crew denim shirts). It makes me look sort of put together? Hopefully?

CF: Have you seen anyone around campus wearing something lately that you wish you had?

DC: Definitely wrap around watches!

CF: Being from California, do you feel that the East coast vs. West Coast divide applies to the way college students dress?

DC: Overall, I think there’s definitely a difference! I had never even heard of having to dress for the seasons until I got to Emory. I thought shorts and flip flops in December were totally normal if it was 70 degrees out. We also lose a lot of the surfer/skater look on the East Coast, but it’s way preppier out here. I am proud to say I purchased my first pair of Sperry’s after my first semester at Emory.

CF: Is there anything in particular on your Spring Break shopping list?

DC: Bright/neon-colored shorts!

How To: Although leggings have gotten a bad reputation lately, if worn correctly they can be both stylish and comfortable. It is crucial to choose leggings that are completely opaque to avoid any embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions. Danielle chose a lululemon pair that are full length and look great with her biker-style leather boots. To dress up your favorite pair of leggings, add layers with a cute top and a long cardigan. As always, accessorizing with a long necklace and a bold watch or bangle is an easy way to add some flair to your everyday outfits!
