TREND: Military Chic

Justin Timberlake said it best: “What goes around, comes around” … and in fashion, you can count on any trend to make a comeback in style. One look that’s back for Fall 2011 is military-inspired clothing and accessories – both Burberry and William Rast designed next season’s collections with this trend in mind.

The most important rule with military style is to balance your edgy pieces with well-fitted, girly clothes. Today’s Fashionista, Alanna, is a step ahead of the game in her summer look. I love this vest (the brass buttons are perfect) layered on top of a dark tank. Army green is this trend’s signature color, but feel free to try it in navy or khaki, too.

Slim or skinny jeans tucked into boots are another great way to get the fashion-utilitarian look right. Stick with a polished, dark wash for your denim – distressed or frayed jeans are too distracting and messy (or swap in the famous J Brand twill cargos if you’re feeling extra trendy.) End with a pair of lace up booties: taupe for now, black for fall, and a five-inch platform heel for night.

Hint: Not sure if this style is you? Give this trend a try by topping off your favorite weekend look with a military cap or army-inspired shirt. At ease!

TREND: Spot On

Polk dots are a classic pattern that can be worn a variety of ways. This week, Fashionista Kristine has worked them into a picture-perfect outfit for summer. The proportions of this look are great: balance a slim tank with a longer, more modest skirt – just because it’s hot out doesn’t mean a mini is mandatory!

Match your favorite spotted shorts or skirt with a solid tank in the color of your choice. Prints can be mixed, but pick wisely – the best bet is a subdued pattern in a coordinating shade.

Finish your look with three key pieces: a statement pendant, woven belt and neutral sandals. Jewelry should be fun but not too heavy. Try a nature-inspired necklace or layered chains that add some interest to your outfit. A thin, braided belt should stay in the same color family as your shoes and bag – start with different shades of taupe and brown for pieces that are easy to mix, and don’t be afraid of beads. These small accents can step your look up a lot.

Hint: Fashionistos can rock these dots too, like with this spotted cardigan from BDG. The monochrome color scheme is so stylish everyone will want to pick one up. Get them while they’re hot – and don’t be surprised when this cool cardi becomes your favorite Fashionista’s go-to ‘boyfriend’ sweater.

TREND: In the Bag

There is never a shortage of designer, statement bags competing to become the ‘it’ purse of the season. Luckily, a select few have survived the test of time, and proved themselves to be worthy investments for any Fashionista’s future.

The ideal ‘classic bag’ should work for any season or style. Take Louis Vuitton, for example – the iconic logo of this French fashion house (founded in 1854) compliments in any silhouette or shape. The neutral colors, subtle monogram print and minimal hardware on these purses are the perfect addition to any outfit, any time of the year.

Try a casual look like this Fashionista did to let your statement bag shine. Start with a cool, basic dress: a floral, ruffled babydoll or summery maxi dress are two perfect pieces that work well with this style. Throw on a light cardigan, but keep it cropped and muted in color, as not to distract from the rest of your outfit.

Flip-flops are a seasonal staple, and I still think J. Crew makes some of the best. The ‘skinny classic’ comes in a variety of tropical colors to match any ensemble, or step up your look with the same hue in ‘skinny wedge’ instead. Dressing for evening? Finish with strappy sandals or wedges that add polish and flair.

Hint: A playful romper can also offset your favorite accessory. Throw on a jumpsuit for a more comfortable dress alternative that’s more fitted for summer fun.

TREND: Shady Lady

When it comes to summer style, there’s no better duo than the ‘sunglasses and cutoffs’ combination. The mornings may still be breezy, so feel free to throw an easy scarf on top. Finish with the perfect beach (or lake) bag and start the season off right.

This Fashionista rocks the shorts-and-tights look à la Nicole Richie (I love this distressed denim-and-opaque black look) with her vintage-inspired tee. Classic cutoffs never go out of style: Abercrombie & Fitch and sister brand Hollister Co. make some of the best. Buy a pair you’ll keep for years (the picture of worn-in perfection) – these shorts get better with age.

Aviator sunglasses have classic frames that flatter most faces. Keep the sun out of your eyes with pairs from Ray-Ban or D&G – both come in a variety of frame and lens colors to suit your style.

Finally, put your best foot forward in the official shoes of summer: wedges and platforms (or the wedge/platform love child of 2011, the flatform). Try bright, wooden heels or a striped, denim sandal for two pairs that will work at BBQs or brunch.

Hint: You can spot the nautical trend year-round, but summer’s the time to do it right. Stick to one piece so your outfit is more chic than sailor: a nautical romper or striped tee will both do the trick.

TREND: Spring LBD

Just because pastels are traditionally in for spring, it doesn’t mean that fashion staples like the LBD should get pushed aside. This favorite basic can be just as festive – add a floral shoe, bag and a few fresh accessories for a seasonal spin on this dark trend.

Start with a basic black dress in your silhouette of choice – a shift, babydoll or body-con look can all work well with this style. Then pile on the spring-inspired accessories: a floral statement necklace, cool cocktail ring or the perfect pair of earrings are all great ways to spice up your look.

Don’t go overboard with the flowers – Fashionista Jen gets it right with this structured, chainstrap bag. Rather than match too closely with her yellow pumps, this metallic purse is the perfect piece to complete her outfit. The age-old rule that a shoe should be as dark as your hem doesn’t apply: footwear in bold, bright colors can work, just make sure they tie your trendy pieces together.

Hint: The bright heel comes in a million different varieties. Try a peep toe pump, pink platform or a watercolor-inspired shoe to step into spring with your best foot forward.

TREND: Free Spirit

With finals around the corner and summer in sight, there has never been a better time to bring back your favorite easy, breezy boho pieces. Fashionista Lauren has put together the perfect look for this time of year. Stylish and versatile, girls everywhere should take notes on her cute clothing combo and must-have accessories.

Try this look on your own by pairing a short, black dress (I love the cutout sleeves on this edgy mini) with a pair of ankle- or calf-high shoes. Rock moccasin-inspired boots while the weather’s still cool, then switch to sandals – luckily, Jeffrey Campbell has you covered. This famed shoe designer has showcased a million cool styles this season – try his woven lace-up for day or the fringed boot when you want to work a heel instead.

Pile on the jewelry to complete this effortless, edgy-cool style. Nothing is off limits: layer beaded bracelets, rings and a chic cuff, then finish with a statement-making pendant – the basic LBD means you can go all out with accessories.

Hint: The perfect bag for this outfit is structured and way trendy. Try a nature-inspired tote, embellished satchel, or a metallic clutch, depending on your mood. Just make sure to stick to leather – this luxe choice adds polish to your otherwise bohemian look.

TREND: Make a Statement

The ‘statement necklace’ has gotten a lot of attention in recent seasons as the best way to spice up an outfit, but there’s no reason not to add a bold piece to an equally loud look. This Fashionista proves the right combination of big, cool clothes and accessories can take an outfit to the next level.

I love the color combinations and voluminous silhouette of this adorable dress – pale pink ruffles are perfect for spring. Even better? She works in two more totally unique pieces. This turtle necklace is beyond cool, and a fun, quirky addition of personality and style. Lace booties add a hip edge as a great alternative to your typical embellished flat or wedge.

Adding one animal-inspired item is great to make it work on your own. Luckily, a ton of designers have Jungle Fever this year. A gold beetle, silver horse or brass zebra are just three whimsical picks that you should try on for size.

Hint: Keep your look streamlined with a simple purse that doesn’t distract. A classic, neutral bag will let your other pieces do the talking.

TREND: Biker Chic

As every good Libra knows, balance is the key to life. When it comes to fashion there’s no exception – when mixing colors or styles it’s all about keeping it even… and keeping it real.

Fashionista Shannon wears her coral cocktail look with an edgy biker jacket: the perfect balance of cute and chic. Start with a fun, girly slip dress and then toughen it up – a little leather never hurt anyone. Two other sleek looks? Try tailored leather skinnies with a sheer pink blouse, or ditch the jacket for a studded bag or ring (but never both at once).

A tiny Coach clutch is perfect for keeping your essentials close and your look streamlined. Dressing for day instead? Switch out the wristlet for a round satchel in the same style. Pick a platform heel that you want to show off – and get ready to put your best foot forward.

Hint: If spikes and studs aren’t your thing, try a tote with hardware that’s not too tough. Don’t worry about matching your metals – mixing metallics is an easy way to rock the edgy/polished look.

TREND: Laced Up

Pastels and florals are two trends that are always in for spring – and this year you can add lace to the list. This pretty style has been spotted all over campus, like on this Fashionista’s cute, white vest. This trend can work so many ways, try seeking out unique pieces to put the lace in your look.

One cool option is the lacy LBD. A classic wardrobe staple, try your newest Little Black Dress with a little embellishment and a lot of attitude. This modern update features an exposed zipper and pale pink lining to help highlight your best features – and keep the rest under wraps.  Wearing a different kind of lace on your shoes is another cool look. The wedge shoe can work with a couple of different styles. Balance a lace-on-lace look by pairing your favorite denim and an edgy black top, or try these wedges with a shorter (non-lace) LBD for night.

The ‘lace’-up boot  is a fun alternative for day. Give your favorite worn-in booties a rest by switching to this stylish pair. The crochet detail mixes a hard-feminine look that is versatile and easy to wear. Try them with a girly skirt and basic tank, or with your go-to jeans and a floral blouse. The lace look shouldn't overwhelm your outfit. Try this textured cuff to update clothes already in your closet. Other accessory options? A statement necklace or delicate earrings are easy to make work no matter what your personal style.

For the girl that likes color, take a break from your LBD and slip into this strapless minidress. Too sheer for your taste? Go with a solid style and pair with lace tights instead.

Hint: It doesn’t have to be light to mix well with lace. Try a dark leather bag and a bright top (like our Fashionista) to balance your outfit.

TREND: Peace and Love

With the cool weather finally warming up, it’s about time to add some sunny style to your wardrobe. Pick a tee with an optimistic slogan and brighten up your spring day. This ‘peace & love’ Free People blouse on Fashionista Mauralynne is a breezy piece to work into your look. If a printed message isn’t your thing, try layering two different tanks – a solid and pattern are great to mix and match.

Don’t want to go over the top… how about over the knee? These boots are cool and basic, with a little more style than your average pair. Wear them with leggings or jeggins for a clean silhouette and a streamlined fit.

It’s no secret that the functional carryall is the Fashionista’s classic backpack alternative. Play up the style factor by picking a bright bag like this one from DVF. Its simple shape gets a boost from the fun color combo and touch-me texture. Finish the look with basic layers you can transition with the temperature.

Hint: Living somewhere more tropical? Switch out the leggings for a cute skirt and a pair of tall socks. Tuck in your tanks and keep the hemline modest so this look is more ‘pretty’ than ‘Pretty Woman’.
