STYLE ADVICE: Statement Of Simplicity

If any of you are familiar with Cincinnati, you’re already clued in on its bipolar weather, giving us freezing temperatures one day, and almost being able to wear shorts the next. This Fashionista found a way around the unpredictable changes and decided to mix a couple seasons into one adorably simple outfit. On her way into a tattoo shop, she draws attention to her outfit without overcrowding her body of unnecessary accessories and layers.

Sweater and T-shirt dresses, or just baggier, more casual dresses in general, have made their way to the top of a girl’s wardrobe essentials. Not only is it super quick and easy to throw on, but it makes even the simplest outfits pop. Sweater dresses can be worn during any season really, tights being an option if it’s a bit colder. She paired her dress with a long denim jacket, adding some spunk while keeping her warm. Knee-high boots are a staple for any outfit, they can take it from dull and quiet, and give the look character. She kept it light on the accessories, again enforcing simplicity as a statement. With a watch that matched the color of her boots, and a gold necklace to brighten up the otherwise pastel vibe. Just like the inconsistency of the temperatures, the sun tends to keep up the mysterious weather patterns and peak in and out throughout the day, so she made sure to have a pair of sunglasses handy, just in case.

I’ve always kept in mind that less is more, and my mom made sure that concept was drilled into my head when I was a seventh grader unknowingly caking on make up, but who wasn’t at that age? This Fashionista has grasped this and carried it out in an outfit that isn’t in your face, but catches your eye. More times than not, keeping it to a minimum goes a longer way than throwing on a bunch of random items, just to make your look seem more intricate. Keeping it simple and adding a couple prominent pieces ensures that the outfit won’t be too much for the eye and also maintains a unique and fun look!

WHAT TO WEAR: Denim Daydream

Grab your pens and pencils all you Fashionista’s and Fashionisto’s because school is in session. What is this month’s lesson you may ask? Well this month is all about denim. Denim was huge on the runway and in my opinion, denim is always a great way to look stylish. Whether it’s a denim jacket or a beautiful pair of jeans, there is no such thing as too much denim.

This Fashionista knows how to dress! From those gorgeous shoes to that beautiful top, everything about her is flawless. Perfect for Cleveland weather, jeans are always a safe choice in the unpredictable climate we live in. Paired with a fun top and some shades, you’re guaranteed to be comfortable on your walk to class. Speaking of walking, those booties are perfect for that long commute across the quad. Also, if you are looking for a statement to make with a denim outfit, something that is tan in color is perfect because the colors go great together.

Looking like she just walked the runway, but really just walked from the library, this Fashionista was so much fun and was so excited when I asked if I could take a picture of her outfit. She was absolutely fantastic to work with. Her outfit truly inspired me to break out some of my old denim and be bold and fearless with it because that’s what fashion is all about. Here’s hoping we run into each other again!

That’s all for this month. Class dismissed. Stay fabulous lovelies.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Confidence is Key

Hello again, Fashionistas! The weather is finally getting cooler, the leaves are starting to turn and you know what that means? Fall is right around the corner, and I couldn’t be more excited because fall means fashion, well more fashion that is.

It’s almost time for boots, scarves, jackets and all the other garments that come with the cold. But just because the temperatures are dropping, doesn’t mean you have to go out and spend a ton of money on a brand new wardrobe. You just have to find pieces you can transition from summer to fall.

This lovely Fashionista on my campus took a basic T-shirt and jazzed it up by layering a summer dress on top. Layering is an easy and simple way to stay warm yet stylish in fall. The basic black socks paired with these chunky black heels add an extra spunk to the look. This is the perfect heel for a day full of classes and walking, providing lots of support. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone a little, explore different trends or try something new. You never know what you’ll come to love.

Of course I couldn’t forget the beautifully embellished choker she added to pull the whole outfit together.  She complemented her makeup with a pop of color for lipstick. I absolutely love this look because this Fashionista is so confident wearing it. In my opinion, that’s what fashion is about; being confident in who you are. Whatever you chose to wear on campus, wear it with confidence! Rock that outfit and strut to class like no one is watching.

STYLE GURU BIO: Allison Relyea

My name is Allison Relyea and I’m 21 and a Junior at The New School in New York City. I’m so excited to be interning here at CollogeFashioninsta! I’m excited to not just post about my fashion and the fashion around me, but to read other articles from you all as well!

Like I mentioned, I attend The New School and I am a fashion and writing major. Fashion as well as writing has always been a passion and interest of mine since a very young age. At The New School I am able to channel both of my passions into one and I am in the process of making a career out of the two. I enjoy people’s styles, different textures, and mixing up pieces when it comes to fashion. I write, and blog, about fashion to help give some insight and help for others.

I also run a fashion blog (dressedbyallie.blogspot.com If you would like to check it out) in hopes of helping people find inspiration, share my fashion tips, and style as I briefly mentioned before. I also wanted to share my love for fashion and writing through that blog. I think it is really fun to document my fashion style over the courses of a few years. I also like to document my life and personal things that happen as well. I would love to extend and be a lifestyle blogger as well one day. At the moment, I’m committed to my blog, school, and traveling as much as possible.
I have a wide variety of interests and I’m trying to channel it in a direction that makes me happy and expresses my inner passions. I would a career in fashion as a fashion blogger, fashion stylist, or writer, own my own brand, or own a company. Anything that I feel works towards my passion and interests.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Dope Couple Style

Random street style is the best when coming across fashionable couples. I love when I come across couples that are showing off their style together. When I ran across this couple, I immediately thought of the cute couples I see on Instagram.

The one thing I like most about their outfit was how they had on All-black ensemble. Both were sporting trendy caps and stylish sneakers. I am always a fan of All-black especially when you can add great accessories to complete the look. Whether you are adding neon or a basic color, black will always be perfect to go along with any look. Also, you can literally wear black any season and it’s still okay. Black represents a chill lifestyle to me when I see younger people wear it.

I love how the Fashionisto represented his style by wearing a T-shirt with an artist he listens to. The T-shirt stood out to me and made the look very modern and upbeat. The Fashionisto’s outfit remained simple and low-key, while the graphic T-shirt with the artist made the look stand out. The Fashionista’s outfit was straight to the point and very classic with her Vans. I love how she paired her All-black T-shirt with pants instead of jeans. The pants gave the look a classic touch. Overall this was a fly couple with undeniable style.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I love trends and I love when they are done the right way. I love black on black when it comes down to fashion. I like to dress black up with accessories, heels and great lipstick.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Around the World In Style

This week’s Fashionista is certainly loyal to her brands. A fashion and travel blogger herself, her fun flirty style definitely caught my eye on a gloomy Florence afternoon. Her blog, History In High Heels, is dedicated to fashion, travel and lifestyle tips. Travelling abroad and being fashionable can sometimes be a delicate balance, whether you’re stumbling on the cobblestone in Florence or dodging the summer showers that come and go as they please. But as Fashionistas, we are fashionable year-round, in rain or shine. For the perfect look for every location, make sure to check out this Fashionista’s blog.

As you know, my favorite fashion tool is a focal point. This Fashionista used the distinct pattern from her skirt as the focal point, then kept the other pieces toned down to hone in on the skirt. My favorite added touch on this outfit was the Furla bag, which also added a muted pop of color with a tea rose pink. The navy blue and floral is also a great combo for the weather and season. Keeping it classy and chic, she stuck to one of her favorite brands with head to toe J.Crew.

Want to re-create this look? Pair a patterned skirt with a simple blouse using one of the colors from the skirt, like this Fashionista did. Another one of my favorite tricks is to pair a slim fitting bodycon skirt with a looser fitting top. This adds dimension and can also reframe your body if you choose. To add another focal point, use a bold necklace with similar colors. For tackling the cobblestones of Florence, this Fashionista has a quaint pair of brown leather sandals, which are a great find in the country famous for its genuine leather!

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Traveling with style is not nearly as much work as people think it is. It is surprisingly simple to look put together, fashionable and still be comfortable while exploring a new destination.”

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Rachel Dantas

I have been loving finding these looks on my campus and I’m sad to see the time end this semester. It was fun and many are true Fashionistas. When it comes to what colors will be on the cutting edge, the combination of black and white is proves that it is in high demand and not going anywhere. This Fashionista nailed the use of these crisp colors in a classic way. It’s so simple and feminine and fun for spring weather. It’s amazing when you can make a minimalistic look stand out.

Name: Rachel Dantas

Major: Fashion Business

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?

RD: I’m wearing high-waisted black shorts and a sleeveless white blouse with a leather bow tie. I am very casual and simple today, though I spiced it up with my black heels and a red cross body bag for some color.

CF: How would you describe your style?

RD:  I’d describe my style as sophisticated and classic.

CF: What is an essential piece of clothing in your closet?

RD: My most recent obsession has been different statement accessories; they complete any outfit and take it to a whole other level. I would also die without black boots.

CF: Where do you love to shop?

RD: I usually shop pretty much everywhere and love online shopping as well. That is where you can find really good deals.

CF: Where do you get your fashion inspiration?

RD: Fashion is about you. At least, that’s what I believe. While there may be ever-changing trends as seen on the runways and certain celebrities, in the end, everyones’ fashion senses are just reflections of themselves. So while I keep my eyes open for what people are wearing around me and what looks good, I’d say my inspiration comes from myself.

CF: Do you have any favorite designers/brands?

RD: I don’t have a particular favorite because I love finding quality pieces that fit my style and body. There are so many designers, and I discover new designers all the time.

How To: You can mirror this look easily. It takes no time at all. All you need is black and white. It can be black top with white pants, or a white top with black pants or shorts. Have fun with the shoes you select and bring out your unique style and don’t be afraid to do so.

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Olivia Hutto

Championing the floral patterns and thawing out from the cold weather in Austin, Fashionistas are gearing up for the hot months ahead. As many of us are already creating epic music festival playlists (Lollapalooza this year, anyone?), another important thing to prioritize is a summer look book (because nothing screams “summer” like crop tops, sandals and crochet tanks). This Fashionista is clearly prepared, donning a whimsical and breezy pair of pom pom shorts with an oversized top and sandals. So, whether you’re festival hopping around the country or soaking up the sun at the beach, this versatile ensemble is perfect for the whatever the occasion! To learn more about how to get this look, check out what this Fashionista had to say about her savvy street style.

Name: Olivia Hutto

Major: Economics

Year: Senior

CF: What are you wearing today?

Olivia Hutto: I’m wearing a top from Forever 21, pom pom shorts from Langford Market, sandals from Blue Elephant, Kendra Scott earrings, J.Crew bracelets and carrying a Rebecca Minkoff satchel!

CF: If you were given a shopping spree, where would you go first and why?

OH: A shopping spree? Yes, please! I can’t say where I’d spend it, but I do have a weakness for all that sparkles!

CF: Who or what influences your style the most?

OH: My style is mostly influenced by the mood I wake up in, which isn’t always a good thing. I honestly had a sub-par sense of style until I met my best friend, Audrey, who opened my eyes to so many new and exciting things. It took many days of her telling me to go change until I developed my own eye for fashion. Now, I look to the polished and edgy Victoria Beckham and the free spirited Olsen twins for style inspiration.

CF: What do you think the most important part of an outfit is?

OH: This is a hard one, but I’m going to say shoes. Nothing can ruin an outfit more than wearing the wrong shoes.

CF: What is your favorite event to dress up for and why?

OH:  Any event that requires dressing up is my favorite event! It is important that I have ample time to plan an outfit though. It sometimes takes many long hours of shopping or searching online before I find a dress or outfit that I am confident with.

How To: To create a similar outfit, seek out a pair of colorful, pattern shorts and pair them with a solid color knit or crochet top. For some added flare, look for boho chic accessories and you’re ready to go!

FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Alyssa Schondel

The phrase, “Less is more,” speaks for the conservative movement that is very chic this season. The skin-tight comfort that once hugged our waists has been replaced with a loose-fitting trouser, and the low neckline of our tops got a facelift in the collar department. So long to the obvious feminine and flirty — relaxed menswear-inspired pieces are determining the spring seasonal trends this year. Of course, the fun behind this entire trend stems from our capability to soften these masculine looks.

When I spotted this Fashionista sporting denim trousers and a high-neck top, her choices of color, print and metal are the elements that complete her refined boyfriend-style. Opting for a light wash jean, she adds a touch of color wearing a neon striped top and a twist of edginess with a leather jacket and statement necklace. This Fashionista completes her outfit of the day with an essential, yet simple wrist watch and a classic pair of black flats that every girl should consider having in her closet.

Name: Alyssa Schondel

Major: Fashion Marketing

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: Where do you derive your personal style inspiration from?

Alyssa Schondel: My style inspiration definitely stems from fashion bloggers, especially Always Judging, Lovely Pepa and WeWoreWhat. I also look to Who What Wear and Tumblr for potential outfit ideas.

CF: Describe your perfect every day spring outfit.

AS: My perfect spring outfit would be a solid color, sleeveless swing dress with a killer pair of heeled sandals and a statement necklace. Throw the hair in a top knot and I’m good to go!

CF: What trend are you most excited to wear or try this spring/summer season?

AS: I’m super eager to indulge in full midi skirts and square-neck, ’90s-inspired camis this spring. Cut-outs are soon to be replaced by the retro conservative pieces that are back and hot on the market.

How To: Less — as in revealing less — is more in terms of what a conservative outfit can do for the every day Fashionista. Save the cut-outs and tighter-fitting pieces for 90-degree days and show off more fabric for a look that keeps the boyfriend fit trendy. Neon was hot last year, and it’s back for another season. Incorporate neon in small doses— such as a handbag or within a print — that not only stands out, but also adds a touch of femininity.

SPOTLIGHT FASHIONISTA: Quincy Budell

Finals week can sometimes defeat my sense of style and leave me wearing yoga pants and sweatshirts. As easy as it is to fall into this routine, there’s an even easier solution to prevent it: maxi dresses. Pick out a maxi dress like this Fashionista did! They’re quick, comfortable and adorable. I spotted this Fashionista on her way back from a final looking amazing. She paired her maxi dress with a statement necklace and a jean jacket for warmth. This Fashionista definitely didn’t let finals control her sense of style!

Name: Quincy Budell

Major: Nursing

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: I know it’s finals week and we’re all in a hurry to get to our tests, about how long did it take you to get ready with this outfit?

Quincy Budell: I got ready pretty quickly actually. I just threw on my maxi dress and picked out a necklace to wear that would add texture to my outfit. Then, when I left for my test I grabbed a jean jacket for warmth.

CF: Tell me about your personal style!

QB: Well I’m very much inspired by the South. I didn’t grow up in the South, but I know after college I will end up there. I like bright colors, big hair and I love accessories!

CF: What is your favorite thing in your wardrobe?

QB: My favorite thing would definitely be my accessories. I am a huge fan of wearing a basic outfit and adding life to it with fun accessories. I love scarves and statement necklaces the most and think they add such an important flare to my wardrobe!

CF: What summer trend are you looking forward to the most?

QB: I’m looking forward to wearing a lot of pink! I just read that the summer “it” color is radiant orchid. I LOVE the color pink, so I’m glad I have a good excuse to wear more of it!

How To: To look fabulous in a hurry like this Fashionista, you’ll have to start out with a cute maxi dress. You can wear a basic colored maxi dress like this Fashionista or you can rock a patterned one to mix up the look. After getting your dress on, you’re already half way done! Next, pick out a bold necklace that compliments your dress. This necklace will polish your look so it really doesn’t appear that you got ready in a hurry! Then, put on a pair of cute sandals or flats. Finally, grab a sweater or jean jacket for warmth. After following these quick, simple steps you’ll be looking fierce in a matter of minutes!
