STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Denim Days

Hello fashion lovers, for my first article I want to put a spotlight on those Fashionistos out there. Not every guy has the knowledge of style and luckily this boy does! A business administration major and a varsity lacrosse player does not mean fashion isn’t important to this Fashionisto. He keeps up with the latest trends and truly has a sense of style.

A fall trend coming back is distressed denim. Today, this Fashionisto rocks the ripped denim jeans. He pairs these jeans with the classic high-top black Vans, to make it a more cool and relaxed look. The duo complements eachother to give a relaxed vibe. A small detail he focuses on is the small cuff at the bottom of his jeans to meet the top of his Vans, he prefers narrower roll for a tapered look. Cuffed jeans are a timeless trend.

Recently, we see more denim on denim entering back into today’s trends. A way to go about wearing denim on denim; wear dark denim jeans and a lighter denim top or jacket, which is the most flattering to the eye. In light of that comeback trend, this Fashionisto pairs his distressed jeans with light denim button-up. He prefers to leave it unbuttoned so his long, Justin Bieber-inspired shirt can be seen. This look is a comfy but versatile look. It is very simple style making it very easy to duplicate. During the hotter months, it is easy to remove the light denim overlay and tie it around your waist while on the way to classes. Nothing looks cooler than a pair of shades, here we see the Fashionisto styled in Ray-Bans, in the classic style “Justin” Ray-Bans.

Stay tuned for more articles about the latest trends on campus!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Dope Couple Style

Random street style is the best when coming across fashionable couples. I love when I come across couples that are showing off their style together. When I ran across this couple, I immediately thought of the cute couples I see on Instagram.

The one thing I like most about their outfit was how they had on All-black ensemble. Both were sporting trendy caps and stylish sneakers. I am always a fan of All-black especially when you can add great accessories to complete the look. Whether you are adding neon or a basic color, black will always be perfect to go along with any look. Also, you can literally wear black any season and it’s still okay. Black represents a chill lifestyle to me when I see younger people wear it.

I love how the Fashionisto represented his style by wearing a T-shirt with an artist he listens to. The T-shirt stood out to me and made the look very modern and upbeat. The Fashionisto’s outfit remained simple and low-key, while the graphic T-shirt with the artist made the look stand out. The Fashionista’s outfit was straight to the point and very classic with her Vans. I love how she paired her All-black T-shirt with pants instead of jeans. The pants gave the look a classic touch. Overall this was a fly couple with undeniable style.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I love trends and I love when they are done the right way. I love black on black when it comes down to fashion. I like to dress black up with accessories, heels and great lipstick.

FASHION FROM ABROAD: Pitti Uomo

This week I had the opportunity to attend Pitti Uomo, self-described as “the world’s most important platform for men’s clothing and accessory collections and for launching new projects in men’s fashion.” Everyone knew that Pitti was in town because Firenze was suddenly booming with Fashionistas and Fashionistos, more so than usual. There were quite a few common trends seen among the men and it was clear that they were all fluent in fashion.

This Fashionisto caught my eye from all the way across the street. As he was investing in the street vendor hipster-esque fedora you see above, I dodged traffic to snap a pic. His outfit alone was enough to stop traffic.

The cropped plaid pants are a statement, but paired with the rich turquoise blazer to bring out the color in the pants, they tied this outfit together in a bold way. The Oxford-style textured leather loafers were a key accessory with this outfit as well. Each accessory, the fedora, the initialed gold belt buckle to bring out the gold pins on his blazer and the original leather handbag had a strong individual presence, but this Fashionisto eloquently paired all together to create an entirely BOLD look. Cropped pants were very popular among the men at Pitti Uomo, and each one was styled to their unique taste. I’m certainly a fan of the cropped trouser, and when they are used as the focal point it is easy to dress around it by pairing the perfect blazer, hat and Oxfords just by using the colors in the trousers, perfectly demonstrated by this Fashionisto! I loved that he used each color from the plaid to put together this ensemble; from the classic white button-up tying in the white details in the plaid and on the leather bag, the black leather shoes to match the plaid and tie in the black bag, the bright turquoise blazer to bring out the turquoise in the plaid and finally adding the gold accents.

When I inquired about his belt and bag, he said that they were a part of his upcoming line. Based out of Los Angeles, Dejon Marquis and his fiancé Raquel Celeste were visiting Florence to build connections for their brand ICanDress2. This is a definitely a brand to look out for! Check out their website for more information of ICanDress2 and fashion from Pitti Uomo, Milan Fashion Week and more!

Let’s hear it for the fashionable men of Florence and Pitti Uomo!

Captured: I spotted this Fashionisto at the Pitti Uomo in Florence, Italy. As the men’s portion of the Pitti Immagine collection of fashion events, Pitti Uomo is a tradeshow in Florence, Italy that’s been around since 1972. It’s a four-day market-facing event in which retailers, buyers, and editors come together to view upcoming collections.

FASHIONISTO SPOLIGHT: Kyle Chu

As summer is approaching and college students are nearing the end of their semesters, it’s time to break out those summer clothes. When it comes to summer fashion, anything goes. Wear what makes you feel comfortable, reveals your personality and most importantly have fun with it. Rules are meant to be broken and fashion is no exception. This Fashionisto is bringing the business world to the streets. He’s ready for whatever life has in store for him.

Name:
 Kyle Chu

Major:
 Finance

Year:
 Freshman

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your personal style?

Kyle Chu: Honestly, I pick my clothes depending on what’s on top of the pile, however weather plays a factor. I think my personal style reflects my laid back personality but I like to stick to neutrals.

CF: Where do you get your fashion inspiration?

KC: I like to follow fashion trends. My favorite at the moment is cropped jeans and loafers. I get inspiration from my father as well. I’m a huge fan of the business look outside the office.

CF: What is your go-to piece of clothing?

KC: A black t-shirt. You can pair it with anything and it will never go out of style.

CF: What is something you would never be caught dead in?

KC: I would never wear baggy khaki pants because it doesn’t fit my body type.

CF: What is your favorite accessory?

KC: I love my Emporio Armani silver watch, it can really tie together an entire look and look very masculine.

How To: To achieve this Fashionisto’s look, take a classic pair of jeans and roll them up. Afterwards, grab your favorite graphic-tee or plain tee and pair with a blazer of your choice or a classic jacket. This look would look perfect with a fedora if you own one.

FASHIONISTO SPOTLIGHT: Sam Elder

Finals are over, and summer has officially commenced. Campus is getting empty, but as I made my last rounds of campus searching for a stylish student, I stumbled upon this fellow. Today’s Fashionisto keeps it classic and summer simple on this hot day. He sports a classic plaid button-down with Bermuda shorts and brown boat shoes, a look only fitting to sail away on the best of boats.

Name: Sam Elder

Major: Biology and Business

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your style?

Sam Elder: My style is preppy, but relaxed. I like short shorts, and my style is almost fratty in a way, but I am not in a fraternity. I like to wear button-down shirts, shorts, skinny jeans that are not too skinny and Sperry Top-Siders. Sperry Top-Siders are a staple for me.

CF: Who is your style icon and why?

SE: I really like the way that Lana Del Rey dresses, not that she inspires me. I just love the way that she looks— the style that she has and what she wears.

CF: What is favorite part about dressing for the summer?

SE: I like being able to show off my legs, especially if I have a tan and just being comfortable.

How To: To achieve this classic ensemble, locate a simple short sleeve button-down. Make sure to keep the fabric light to suit the warmer weather. Next, find some trendy Bermuda shorts. You can buy the shorts at knee length, or do it yourself and cut an old pair of jeans. Then, find a classic brown or black waist belt and pair your look with neutral Sperry Top-Sider shoes.

FASHIONISTO SPOTLIGHT: Justin Soto

As much as I love spring, I detest the rain. It’s the type of weather that makes getting dressed a chore, and I’m always at a loss as to what to wear.  The idea of putting together an ensemble that is true to my style, comfortable and won’t get me drenched seems as impossible as wearing sweatpants to the Oscars—it just won’t happen. However, if there’s anything to help combat against these spring showers, it’s the trench coat, as this Fashionisto demonstrates.

The trench coat has become synonymous with classic style and preppiness—and Burberry of course. I love how he anchors such a timeless piece with colored denim on the bottom and a crewneck sweater layered over a plaid button down on top. The trench coat, along with the leather bag and shoes, keeps the ensemble from becoming a St. Patrick’s Day uniform and makes it appropriate for the daily 9 to 5 of a college student. The finishing touch is to pop that collar and you’ll look like you’re ready to conquer anything.

Name: Justin Soto

Major: Broadcast Journalism

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: How has your style evolved overtime?

Justin Soto: I won best dressed in high school (not to brag), but since junior year, I have enjoyed taking the time to create looks that I really enjoy. Now, I wear clothing that’s somewhat more mature and professional, like button-down shirts and dress shoes, but they can also be worn casually.

CF: As a broadcast journalism major, how does fashion play a role in what you’d hope to be your future career?

JS: As a broadcast journalism major, I watch my favorite networks such as CNN or the local news to see how the male anchors and reporters mix and match their suits and button-down shirts. In my field, we usually need to look professional, except if we are covering a light feature story or something fun where we would need to dress for a different occasion. I like the professional look that helps reporters represent their news station appropriately but allows them to share their personal style as well.

CF: How do you view the state of menswear fashion today?

JS: I wish menswear was more popular in the fashion industry in comparison to women’s, but I think designers will continue to showcase a few special outfits on the runway and also in editorial. I think it’s becoming progressively more European and trendier, especially with shorter shorts and brighter colors.

CF: Name five basics every man should have in his closet.

JS: Every man should have a versatile, black peacoat for any season (especially for the crazy Boston weather), a bright scarf, a pair of shoes to dress down or up in, a fun hoodie or crewneck sweater for more casual days and lastly a leather belt (I have one that is reversible with brown and black and it’s perfect for any outfit).

How To: Known for its timelessness and versatility, working with a trench coat as simple. Choose your neutral, either a khaki version or a navy one, and don’t be shy to pair it with some colored denim. There’s a lot of freedom as to what to wear on top. From a basic T-shirt to a plaid button-down, the options are endless. Finally, slip on a pair of classic brogues and grab a leather satchel, and you’re surely to become the new campaign model for Burberry.

FASHIONISTO SPOTLIGHT: Ryan McDonough

As we grow older our tastes begin to change. Although fashion is continuously evolving, style is more permanent and personal. College allows us to explore and experiment with almost every facet of our lives, including trends and styles. Coming into your own sense of style can be daunting. This Fashionisto makes a smooth and subtle transition. He uses classic and simple pieces to create a put together look. The light colored shorts paired with a staple V-neck top creates an overall preppy feel that is ready for spring. This Fashionisto’s outfit choice can be worn on a multitude of occasions, truly making it an elegant and timeless look. Continue reading below to find out how to transition your look from one season to all seasons and your fads into style.

Name: Ryan McDonough

Major: Accounting

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing and where is each piece from?

Ryan McDonough: I am wearing a black sweater from Ralph Lauren, a watch from Fossil, yellow shorts from Eddie Bauer and boat shoes from Sperry Top-Sider.

CF: What are some of your favorite stores to shop at?

RM: I like to shop at Eddie Bauer, American Eagle Outfitters and Ralph Lauren.

CF: How has college influenced your taste in style?

RM: I would say that college has made my style more preppy. Going to a school where a lot of people wear preppier clothing has really influenced and developed my style over the past two years.

CF: Do you plan on embracing the style of a professional work environment?

RM: I always joke about having to wear business casual clothes and suits and hating it but I secretly like it in small doses. I’ll definitely embrace the style of the professional work environment when I get out of college because it’s just nice that everyone looks put together and successful in the workplace every day.

How To: Take this Fashionisto’s advice and stick to pieces that are versatile, wearable and professional. To recreate this preppy look grab a pair of colored shorts such as these. Be sure to choose a color that is subtle and suits your personality. Next, add a classic Ralph Lauren T-shirt that contrasts the bottoms such as these options. This helps create a put together yet stylishly preppy look. Boat shoes are a staple in any Fashionisto’s closet, especially one who has his mind set on success in and out of the classroom. Garnish off the look with a leather strap watch. With your newly found look, you are ready to take the fashion, academic and corporate world by storm.

FASHIONISTO SPOTLIGHT: AJ Pignone

As the end of the year makes a blissful appearance, finding the balance between work and play can be difficult. The first thing on all of our minds is how we are going to celebrate the end of the school year and first couple weeks of summer. This Fashionisto is wearing the perfect outfit for transitioning from a final presentation to a night out. He is wearing a blue gingham patterned shirt with a salmon colored tie. He has navy chinos on with brown leather boots and a brown leather watch to accessorize. To make his outfit more casual for going out, he could simply take his tie off and he will be ready for the night!

Name: AJ Pignone

Major: History

Year: Junior

College Fashionista: What are you wearing today?

AJ Pignone: My shirt and tie are Ralph Lauren, my pants are from J.Crew, my watch is Fossil and my shoes are J SHOES.

CF: How would you describe your personal style?

AP: I really like to make sure that I’m wearing what’s in. The tighter pants look is coming back in from the 80’s and I think it makes a good statement. I like my clothes to tell people that I’m fun and approachable. I think it’s important for guys to understand how to dress.

CF: How do you find an equal balance between work and play?

AP: It can be hard honestly. I love going out and having a good time between playing football, studying and hanging with my friends but I have to make sure I am organized. There always has to be time for play especially when you are in a frat!

How To: Just as this Fashionisto did, you can easily dress up and dress down a button-up shirt. Guys have it easy in the sense that they can just add a tie to dress things up. This 7 Diamonds sport shirt from Nordstrom has a subtle pattern on it that will look great with and without a tie. Pair this shirt with these Dockers chinos and you’ll have a perfect outfit for a presentation or an end of the semester party!

FASHIONISTO SPOTLIGHT: Stan Okoro

Everyone knows the classic story book image of a fisherman with his essential canvas hat and boat shoes. This style has recently come back as a trend with guys sporting the archetypal fisherman hat with an otherwise preppy ensemble. The look is perfect for spring because the nautical essence fits in with the vibes of the season. I caught up with this Fashionisto who seems to have the fisherman inspired look down.

Name: Stan Okoro

Major: Biology

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: What inspired your outfit today?

Stan Okoro: The weather definitely inspired my outfit because it was very sunny and nice outside. These clothes are kind of free.

CF: Who is your style icon?

SO: I don’t really have a style icon but for the bucket hat I would definitely say that School Boy Q would be my style icon because he’s bringing the trend back. So I’m supporting the movement.

CF: What is your favorite spring trend?

SO: My favorite spring and summer trend I guess would be like bro tanks and tank tops, just during the day because it’s hot outside in Georgia. So that would probably be the main thing.

CF: What is your go-to spring accessory?

SO: My all time accessory would be my watch which I always wear whenever I go anywhere and do my main things. Other than that like socks and shoes…I don’t know.

CF: How would you describe your personal style?

SO: That’s hard…my personal style…it’s just whatever I’m feeling at the moment. I don’t think too hard about my clothes.

How To: To get this nautical look, you need to adopt the fisherman essentials into your wardrobe. The bucket hat is the fundamental part of this look but give it a stylish twist by picking one with a unique pattern.  Along with the hat, choose a button-up that also has a funky pattern perfect for the spring vibe. The fisherman outfit usually includes a pair of baggy trousers but give it a little swagger with a pair of slim-fit sideline pants. It would be long before all the other fashionable students catch on to this look.

FASHIONISTO SPOTLIGHT: Eric Suen

Often times men feel like they can’t experiment with fashion; however, meet this Fashionisto who can prove them wrong. He takes a classic look such as a button-down and a tie and makes it his own (not to mention colorful and trendy as well). His look is sleek and modern, yet we are still able to see parts of his personality shine through. Overall, this Fashionisto is ready to take on the world with this look.

Name:
 Eric Suen

Major:
 Economics

Year:
 Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your personal style?

Eric Suen: I would have to say that I have a mixture of a lot of things but I definitely have a preppy influence to my style. Additionally, I really like to dress modern. I really like to suit up and dress up.

CF: What is a staple in your collection?

ES: My watch and my glasses. I feel naked without both of these and I feel like they tie my entire look together. I wear these red glasses for more casual occasions and I have a black pair that I wear for more formal occasions.

CF: What is on your wishlist?

ES: I really want a tailored or fitted suit from J.Crew. Those suits fit my body type better since I am on the thinner side. A navy blue one would be my first pick.

CF: What are some of your favorite trends right now?

ES: I really like sharp colors such as turquoise and red. I’m also a huge fan of the rolled up pants and slicked back hair look.

CF: What’s something you would never be caught dead in?

ES: I would never be caught dead in pajamas or sweatpants. When I go out, I like to look composed.

CF: Where do you get your fashion inspiration from?

ES: I get a lot of my inspiration from J.Crew. I love everything they have from their suits to their more modern pieces like cuffed pants. I also get a lot of influence from my dad, believe it or not. We are both kind of shopaholics so we use that time to bond. I like to dress in a way that reflects by personality as well.

How To: To achieve this Fashionisto’s look, grab brown shoes to start off the look. Then, grab a tie that fits your personality in order to finish off your look. Then take your favorite pants and try something new by rolling up and cuffing the bottom to be more on trend for this upcoming summer.
