FASHION NEWS: Banana Republic is Mad About Style

One of our former University of Oregon Style Gurus and current editorial intern, Breanne, besides assisting with this site also works at her local Banana Republic store. I always love checking in with our past Style Gurus and hearing them share their thoughts on fashion with our readers. Since Breanne is connected to Banana Republic, I found it only natural for her to share what's in-stores this season. Banana Republic is running their "Mad About Style" concept and Breanne gave us a sneak peak at the must-haves pieces for our Fashionistos. Check it out:

1. What are four basic essentials every guy should have from BR for back-to-school

Breanne Gratton: The style of Mad Men is very definitive and classic. The show takes place in the 60s and in New York and the costuming captures that feeling perfectly. The style that Banana Republic tries to capture in its clothing every season is a style that radiates classic elegance with a bit of trendiness. Many items, for both men and women, can be worn now and ten years from now because of the classic cuts and colors. 2010 marks the second year that Banana Republic has teamed up with Mad Men for its “Mad About Style” promotion. Also, the Mad Men casting crew is holding calls and Banana Republics and more information can be found at bananarepublic.com.

For back-to-school every guy should definitely invest in Banana Republic's Gavin fit chino pant (or Dawson for a more relaxed feel). BR has just re-launched the men’s and women’s pants to fit better, so that is a good place to start. Another thing I love for guys paired with a chino is BR's slim fit plaid shirt or a nice button up dress shirt. To add that Don Draper style I would definitely recommend a blazer. They can be a bit pricey, but it is definitely worth the investment. Finally, a cardigan. I know often times we hear that women always need a cardigan, but I firmly believe that men do too. Plus, the cardigans that have been donning the tables of BR are super soft and cozy.

2. What is a piece from BR that can transition from guy's summer wardrobe for fall?

BG: Banana Republic's chino pants are perfect for transitioning. They are just the right weight to wear in the cooler months as well as in the heat of the summer.

3. Best accessory in-store right now?

BG: The Maurice cotton fedora. It screams Don Draper and, let's face it, he always looks great in Mad Men.

4. What was the thought-process behind the Mad Men vision and what should we expect to see in-stores the month of August and September?

BG: When I see the ideas for Mad Men inspired looks with Banana Republic's clothing the only thing that comes to mind is timeless elegance and class. Every piece is meant to fit well and to be something that lasts for years. Mad Men has the perfect 60s classic pieces (think John and Jackie Kennedy) and Banana Republic has brought that same charm and style into 2010 with the Mad Men promotions. In-stores I would expect to see items with clean, classic cuts, cardigans, well fitting suiting for.
