FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Alex Balke

“Less is more” my mother told me while decorating crafts as a child. The phrase refers to the fact more can be seen when there is less to distract the eye. This Fashionista has made the phrase her style. She plays with neutrals to let the detail of one piece control the eye’s focus.

Name: Alexandra Balke

Major: Finance

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your style?

Alex Balke: My style is mostly classic and simple. I like wearing neutral colors like blacks, whites and greys. My style is also pretty eclectic. I like wearing funky clothing that doesn’t always match 100 percent.

CF: What’s been your inspiration for your style?

AB: I get most of my fashion inspiration from magazines like Vogue and Elle. I love keeping up with the new trends and watching to see what my favorite artists and actresses are wearing. I also surf the web to keep updated with my favorite stores current trends and styles like H&M, Urban Outfitters, Gap and Free People.

CF: If you could take over anyone’s closet who would it be and why?

AB: If I could raid anyone’s closet it would be singer/songwriter Ellie Goulding. Not only is she a great singer, she also has great style. She is European so she has that unique flare and wears a lot of neutral colors as well. Her style is a bit grungy but simple where she can pull it off.

CF:  What’s next on your shopping list?

AB: The next item I’m planning on buying is a Fossil watch or Ray-Ban sunglasses, I can’t decide. Accessories always complete an outfit and watches and sunglasses are classics. I would like a watch that I can wear on dressy occasions and more casual ones that has a gold or brown leather strap. I would also like Ray bans that have big lenses and have a more vintage look with a bar across the top. I currently interested in the Clubmaster style of Ray-Bans.

CF:  What has been your favorite trend thus far?

AB: One of my favorite trends so far has been being able to mix and match casual clothing with something that is a little dressier. Being comfortable is key for me so I like when I can wear something casual and be able to dress it up a little with one piece. The other trend I’m a huge fan of is just wearing black and white together because I have so much of it and black is slimming making me feel comfortable while wearing it.

How to: Look for shirts with textural detail. This Fashionista’s vertical center is comprised of eyelet. She paired the softness of the eyelet with the harshness of a tweed short while contrasting the dressiness with combat boots.
