FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Juliette Mbida

The Republique/Oberkampf area of Paris is often compared to New York City’s Brooklyn for its abundance of galleries, thrift stores and bobos (French hipsters). Thus, I was surprised when I spotted this Fashionista wearing her flouncy skirt and Van Cleef-like necklace in a sea of grungy teens in denim cut-offs. Her neutral palette and delicate jewelry exudes elegance while her printed skirt adds a hint of playfulness. This outfit also succeeds in showing skin while staying classy, which can be a difficult feat to accomplish on a hot summer’s day. Channeling a polished vibe like that of Chiara Ferragni, this Fashionista shows us how to stay cool yet elegant when the temperature soars.

Name: Juliette Mbida

Year: Senior

Major: Biochemistry

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your personal style?
Juliette Mbida: Casual, with a hint of vintage. I like to mix together various elements in my outfit, like prints with solids and structured with fluffy. This makes my overall look feel “softer” and more elegant, I feel.
CF: Where are your favorite places to go shopping?
JM: It depends on what I’m going shopping for. If I’m going to buy some clothes I’ll go to Zara or H&M, and if I’m buying shoes I’ll go to department stores like Galeries Lafayette and Printemps. As for jewelry, I like to go to Monoprix (the French equivalent of Target), which is incidentally where I bought the long necklace I’m wearing today.
CF: Who are your style icons?
JM: Jessica Alba and Beyoncé when she’s off the stage. I also love Nicole Richie’s style; I think she’s very elegant.
CF: It’s been quite hot in Paris lately. What are your summertime fashion staples?
JM: Tank tops and denim shorts since they’ll keep you cool when it’s burning outside. I also like wearing short, lightweight skirts as well, like the one I’m wearing today.

How To: To recreate this Fashionista’s outfit, start off with an airy printed skirt and pair it with a simple top in solid colors. Alternatively, you could opt for a cropped tank top and a printed dress for an edgier take on her look. For accessories, layer a couple of long necklaces and sling a dark leather bag over your shoulders. Finally, put on some sandals and voilà, you have a cool and elegant look for the summer.
