Summer is the perfect season for bright colors, bold prints and trying something new. Neon is no exception to that list. Whether you’re inspired by warm weather and sunny skies or you just want to add a pop of color to your wardrobe, bright neon should be your go-to. However, this trend comes with a warning: only incorporate one or two pieces into your summer essentials so not to resemble a highlighter. According to the British Fashion Council who reported from London Fashion Week, neon is here to stay through fall and winter 2013. Keep a look out for pops of neon on Erdem, House of Holland and Simone Rocha.
Balancing brightness is key and that is what this Fashionista did. This Fashionista loves bright colors so it came as no surprise that she’d be rocking her best bright hues during a hot day in Schenectady, New York. The Fashionista paired neon with neutral crochet shorts and a simple brown belt to offset the other bright colors. This neon ensemble illustrates just how punchy and fun summer fashion can be.

Major: Mechanical Engineering
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?
Lutao Xie: I am wearing a neon collared shirt from Lilly Pulitzer. I really liked the texture and feel of the shirt. The crochet cream colored shorts are from Forever 21 and they go with everything. These leather flip flops are from American Eagle. The orange messenger bag is from H&M. My earrings are from the jewelry sale in the student center and the bracelets are from different countries from my travels abroad in Vienna, Prague, Florence and Athens.
CF: What do you love about summer fashion?
LX: I like that I can wear bright colors all the time. It makes you feel happy.
CF: How would you describe your style?
LX: I can’t narrow down my style but I really like the European way of dressing. If it is fitted and classy, I will wear it. Recently, I have started to wear masculine and tailored looks while also maintaining some femininity. Those outfits are usually from Zara and H&M.
CF: Where do you get your style inspiration?
LX: I love Vogue. All of the articles are easy to read and full of the best information. I also use my Pinterest account to follow boards that are similar to my style.
CF: Whose closet would you raid and why?
LX: I would like to raid Blake Lively’s closet. I noticed her on “Gossip Girl” and ever since have been following the way she dresses off the show. All of her ensembles are well-tailored and womanly. Even if she’s wearing a casual outfit, she still looks put together.
CF: What is your key accessory must-have?
LX: I love my watch. It’s basic and simple but I can’t leave the house without.
CF: What is one item in your closet you cannot live without?
LX: Collared shirts. I have so many in different styles, colors and prints. If I wear a collared shirt it’s an easy way to look presentable. I like wearing an even mixture of masculine and feminine trends. So, pairing a collared shirt with one girly item is what I feel most comfortable in.
