In the 2006 film, The Devil Wears Prada, ice queen Miranda Priestly scolds a colleague in a meeting when suggesting to feature florals as an upcoming trend. But perhaps the reason Ms. Priestly was underwhelmed by this suggestion was because florals are, in fact, always in fashion. I spotted this Fashionista in front of the New York Public Library about to drop off a book she had taken out. While her frock may be ‘50s inspired, it read as timeless. Seeing this Fashionista wearing florals in front of a rare patch of grass that exists in New York, I lost sight of where I was for a brief second. I felt like I had been transported to the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris (if only). When I returned from my mental bon voyage, it occurred to me that this Fashionista managed to convey the perfect balance between reality and fantasy. Her dress is romantic and feminine, giving off a dreamy feel, with the off-the-shoulder sleeve, while simultaneously remaining understated, due to the small print of the floral pattern and the mid-length of the hem.

CollegeFashionista: What are wardrobe staples you can’t live without?
Cat Lazar: I really like things that are not basics — things that people don’t need like items that are more ornate. I have a beaded vest, that’s vintage-y. I love ‘50s style dresses — I have a million, and it’s basically my uniform.
CF: If you could work with any designer to collaborate on a collection, who would it be?
CL: Marc Jacobs. He’s just fun and a lot of his pieces are just so wearable.
CF: What is your favorite color palette?
CL: I gravitate towards bright colors, but then again, I also wear a lot of muted colors. It really depends on the day and my mood. As far as patterns go, I do wear a lot of florals and polka dots.
How To: To acheive this Fashionista's romantic look, try a floral dress (in pastels or bright colors) like this one from Topshop. Keep it simple with sandals or flats in order to direct focus on the dress. Curl your hair in loose waves, blot your cheeks with rosy blush, apply one coat of mascara and dab your lips with sheer pink gloss to accomplish ultra-dreaminess.
