FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Dylan Somerset

It never fails to amaze me how classic basics can be styled to create a chic look that can challenge even the most intricate looks. The emergence and popularity of Alexander Wang proves that even the fashion elite bow down to the power of the plain white tee. But as us Fashionistas and Fashionistos all know, in order for these basics to transform a look from, well, boring to attention grabbing, you have to put your own personal spin on the look.

Cue Fashionista Dylan Somerset. Although her outfit is composed mostly of plain, solid items, she used beautifully constructed finishing pieces to change her outfit from (please excuse me for using this phrase) drab to fab. The real wow-factor of her outfit is her statement piece: the leather jacket. A leather jacket, my absolute favorite clothing item, is classic, sexy and has the ability to make any outfit instantly edgy. By using her solid basics as a backdrop, she really allowed the leather jacket to command the attention it truly deserves. She also finished off the look with a beautifully constructed gold watch and a Jacobs by Marc Jacobs bag with gold hardware finishes, proving, as always, that style is in the details.

Name: Dylan Somerset

Major: College of General Studies

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your personal style?

Dylan Somerset: I’m very laid back in my attitude and style. I always wear short boots and I love funky scarves and leather. My go-to item is this leather jacket I’m currently wearing.

CF: Do you have any style icons?

DS: Alexa Chung. love her. I would also say Kate Bosworth. Oh and Grace Kelly, too!

CF: Has your style changed since coming to BU?

DS: No, probably not. I just get to wear more layers, which I appreciate. I’m from Southern California so I can’t really wear many leather jackets, so the Boston weather gives me more options.

CF: What do you believe is the importance of fashion?

DS: I guess just to express yourself. It’s fun to play around with and it offers you so many options: you can wear something different every day and externally show off your funky personality.

How To: To mimic this Fashionista’s look, you simply must start with a great leather jacket. When choosing a leather jacket, look for one with exceptional details in the hardware and finishing. Check out this jacket if you're looking for an investment piece or this one if you are on “a ramen noodle a night budget,” as the Allstate man annoyingly jokes. Create an equestrian vibe to contrast the severity of the leather jacket by pairing beige skinny jeans with a slightly darker colored ankle boot. Finish the look with items that you are sure to have in your wardrobe: a cozy knit scarf and plain white tee.
