If you haven’t noticed already, when it comes to fashion this season, matching is out. The newest trend to hit runways and college campuses is a look that is anything but put together. As fall approaches, fashionable college students everywhere are doing a lot of mixing and less matching of patterns, colors and textures in order to mock the looks seen in J.Crew and Tory Burch fall 2011 lookbooks. So Fashionistas, stop wasting your time searching for the perfect color shoes to match that blue in your favorite top and try your hand at the “I got dressed in the dark” trend. This Fashionista caught my eye as she walked down the street sporting a bright mint green purse that perfectly contrasted the yellow pattern in her dress. Even if it wasn’t on purpose, her choice of mixing opposing colors and patterns show true style talent.

Name: Ellie Riordan

Year: Sophomore

Major: Undecided

College Fashionista: What trends have you been wearing a lot of this summer and sad to say goodbye to as fall approaches?

Ellie Riordan: I am sad to say goodbye to my sundresses. I have so many that I wear all the time. They are so fun to wear and easy to dress up.

CF: What trend are you looking forward to wearing this fall?

ER: I am looking forward to wearing stylish hats. I just bought one that has a bow on the side and a cute pattern, and I can’t wait to wear it when the weather gets cooler.

CF: Tell me about your outfit today.

ER: Well I am out looking for jobs so I threw on this sundress. You can’t really go wrong with a sundress and this is one of my favorites. A lot of my friends think it is a skirt, but it is really all one piece. I saw my friend with a purse in this mint green color and loved it so when I saw this one at T.J. Maxx I had to get it.

How To: In order to tackle mixing and (not) matching your outfit try to choose patterns, and colors you wouldn’t normally put together yet still complement each other. Leopard is a great pattern to start with because its neutral color palette allows you to mix it with bold colors like coral and turquoise. Leopard accessories like shoes, belts, and even hats are very popular right now and a great way to spruce up a plain outfit.
