This week’s Fashionista transforms typical New York City simplicity into a graceful get-up by combining solid staples in standout colors. Freshman Emma Chesley pairs a breezy beach tank in sea foam green with high-waisted denim shorts in fluorescent coral. Her combination of earth tones and bold brights sets the ensemble apart from the all-too-typical monochromatic look.
With neon colors heating up and dyed denim trends on the rise, it can be tempting to pair the statement skinnies or vibrant cut-offs with a similarly shaded accessories and neutral colors. But Emma’s combination of warm, cool and mid-toned colors not only makes this trio look trendy, but effortless as well.
Name: Emma Chesley
Year: Freshman
Major: Business
CollegeFashionista: Where do you typically look to for style inspiration?
Emma Chesley: I think I just look at people I see on the streets and on the subway to get ideas.
CF: If you had to whittle down your wardrobe down to five items, what would they be?
EC: A pair of leggings, over-the-knee black boots, a soft sweater, a scarf, and a pair of earrings.
CF: Is there a trend you’re looking forward to wearing for fall?
EC: Infinity scarves and colored pants. I love the colored cords and denim now.
CF: What is your favorite season to dress for and why?
EC: Definitely Fall because I can wear fun scarves. I like that they don’t necessarily have to be warm; they just have to be fun to add a little character. I love boots too! I’m already really tall so the over-the-knee black boots with a pair of black denim or leggings just make me feel like gazelle.
CF: What is your favorite trend past or present?
EC: I like the 80’s stuff with fun colors and fabrics. I really like the tight, 80’s era spandex tops and bodysuits; anything with vibrant colors and fun patterns.
How To: To make clash with confidence like this week’s Fashionista, try pairing pastels with brighter shades from an opposing palette like lemon yellow denim with a deep purple sweater or the fall favorite rusted red denim with a powder blue blouse.
