FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Jessie Meyer

The best part of street fashion is the way that Fashionistas make it seem effortless. Winter looks are easily overdone and become tiring, so it's refreshing to find a girl that pulls off a fresh new look that’s her own. This Fashionista is unmistakably effortless and has a huge cool factor. She inspired me with her grungy look.

This Fashionista's look reminded me of Allison Reynold in The Breakfast Club. Allison had perfected the grunge look and lucky for us, it's back in style. This time around, grunge has been updated and is more polished. The grunge trend has been worn by the starlets of Hollywood like Taylor Momsen and has been seen in Madonna's Material Girl line. This Fashionista's dark colors and layering make her look effortlessly cool, while the splashes of color make her a standout.

Name: Jessie Meyer

Major: English

CollegeFashionista: What influences your style?

Jessie Meyer: I'm inspired by people around me pretty often — roommates and people in class. I think my style changes a lot with my moods too. Sometimes I want to wear dresses and skirts and sometimes baggy jeans and sneakers. In general I like to feel like my outfits look natural and not over-thought.

CF: How did you choose your outfit?

JM: My Levis and my chunky black scarf are sort of the go-to items in my closet, so I wanted to include them. I like the Adidas sneakers because they are simple and versatile, and same with the black tee. The gray tank top hoodie is unique and makes the whole outfit while still being really casual.

CF: How would you describe your style?

JM: Fun, casual. I like unique pieces and weird thrift store stuff.

How To: The key to pulling off grunge is to have the attitude. The look should be easy and not overdone. Layering is a big staple in grunge style and it can be done in a variety of ways, from chunky sweaters to fur vests and even oversized plaid. Statement T-shirts are must-haves but a basic T-shirt will also work if you want to keep your outfit more simple. You can pair it with blue jeans of a lighter wash for class and at night pump up the edginess with leather leggings. Shoes should pull the whole look together. Flat combat boots from Steve Madden add a hard edge to the whole outfit. Just remember, don't over-think the look and you’ll be rocking the grunge style in no time.
