I am a huge fan of oversized sweaters in neutral colors, topped with a scarf and over leggings; however, that look can get a little repetitive and lose its originality… unless you mix it up! Cutouts in the arms and shoulders bring some funk to any sweater, showing some skin and adding style. The cutout trend is so popular among college kids who are trying to spice up their winter and fall outfits, worn just like any other sweater: with a scarf and leggings! I eyed this Fashionista as she was leaving class and approached her about her adorable cutout sweater, chunky scarf and loose boyfriend shorts.

Name: Kelsey Zwolenski

Major: Business

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?

Kelsey Zwolenski: My sweater is from LF and my scarf is from Scoop. My jean shorts are from J.Crew and mocs are Minnetonka!

CF: Who are your fashion inspirations?

KZ: I'm definitely inspired when I travel. I couldn't pinpoint one particular fashion guru that I emulate (although Man Repeller is pretty awesome!). Rather, I get inspiration from the streets. Whether I am interning in NYC or shopping around London, I pick up a few things here and there and then bring them together to make my own style.

CF: What are your favorite colors to wear this fall?

KZ: I'm loving oxblood and military green this fall. They are the perfect colors to incorporate into a basic black, white and neutral wardrobe without going overboard.

CF: What do you think is the biggest fall trend on GW’s campus?

KZ: I think a popular GW staple is a pair of leggings. This fall I'm combining them with combat boots and Rag & Bone booties to shake up the traditional riding boot fad. I've also seen girls rocking great tees and jackets. I love all of the military jackets with contrasting leather arms!

CF: How would you describe your personal style?

KZ: I always have trouble with this one. I like to say that my style is a mix between modern edgy and classic chic. I have my days where boots, waxed black denim and a leather jacket are my go-to, and then I seem to miss my driving mocks and white blouse look the next day. For me, it's all about functionality, comfort and trend, with my natural sassiness peeking through.

How To: To get this Fashionista’s look confidence is clearly key! Then come the clothes! I love GoJane’s black cutout sweater! Black is an easy color to wear and the sweater still has the big, comfy feel. One of my all-time favorite stores, Brandy Melville, has a huge selection of fashionable and cozy sweaters for this season that I highly recommend! You can pair this with shorts, as seen on our Fashionista, but also leggings—a very standard college student look. The most durable and chic leggings can be found at American Apparel in several different patterns and styles. Add a scarf for layering, of course, and finally, match the look with a trendy pair of riding boots! I recommend trying Steve Madden, as they are well-made and super comfy!
