FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Laurah Mwirichia

I think it is safe to say we haven’t seen a lack of color in the fashion world this season. In fact most of this summer’s hottest trends — from tribal prints to color blocking — are based around vibrant shades. Fashionistas everywhere have been spotted rocking summer staples such as sandals, rompers and even nail polish in eye-catching hues. This Fashionista didn’t let Iowa’s record-setting temperatures keep her from making a statement while lunching with friends in this bold yellow frock that perfectly complemented her skin tone.

Name: Laurah Mwirichia

Year: Senior

Major: Anthropology

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about your dress?

Laurah Mwirichia: I got it at a small shop somewhere. I was shopping with friends and they said, “You have to get it. Yellow looks great on you!”

CF: What have you found yourself wearing a lot of this summer?

LM: A lot of dresses. I always wear dresses. They are the best and the coolest to wear. I also just recently bought my first pair of jean shorts. I had never found a pair that fit the way I wanted them to until I stumbled across some at Forever 21.

CF: Do you have a style icon or anyone whose style you wish you could mimic?

LM: I am a resident assistant in the dorms and I have the coolest resident named Audrey. She always looks really retro and is not afraid to try new things when it comes to anything from fashion to hair and makeup.

How To: This season there is truly no wrong way to wear color. Thanks to the latest color blocking trend, Fashionistas have been mixing and matching all sorts of bright tones to create one color-filled ensemble. When color blocking, it is always best to match complimentary colors, meaning colors that are opposite on the color wheel such as green and pink or purple and orange. If you are intimidated by color blocking, go for a simple dress like Laurah’s in a bright hue that compliments your skin tone and accessorize with fun jewelry and this summer’s hottest metallic sandal.
