Red, leather and military, oh my! All three details make for a statement coat. I spotted this Fashionista in the journalism building and was in awe when I saw her jacket. The bold color and leather detailing is a breath of fresh air compared to the typical sea of North Face jackets. A red coat is a great alternative to the overseen black coat because while the color itself makes a statement, red will always be a classic color. I first complimented Madison on her fabulous jacket, and then we chatted designers and career paths.

Name: Madison Bennett

Year: Freshman

Major: Journalism

CollegeFashionista: If you could pick one show to attend for NYFW which one would you choose?

Madison Bennett: Oscar de la Renta, and I know you only said one but I would also have to see Diane Von Furstenberg.

CF: Which item are you excited to break out of your closet for spring?

MB: I have this khaki, pleated, Burberry coat that I am just dying to wear. Jackets are probably my biggest fashion weakness.

CF: Since you’re a journalism major, is fashion journalism a career option for you?

MB: My dream job would be to work for a magazine. My two favorites would have to be Allure and Vogue. My idol is the editor from Allure, Linda Wells.

How To: If you are skeptical about invest in a bold-colored coat for the season, start off with some cheaper options to test run. If you are ready to make a statement, try this cobalt blue trench, or this two-toned jacket from Topshop. A different route to a stylish coat besides color is to focus on the details such as pleating, ruffles, buttons, or fur. Whichever way you decide, pick a coat that expresses your unique style and flare!
