Lately I have noticed that the students of George Washington really know how to play with color! They layer their neutrals and add some subtle brights, or rock black on black with a neon shoe or tote. Sometimes they throw a colorful scarf over a neutral sweater or wear a patterned flannel with colorless accessories. Color has been so big this fall, featuring power colors such as rose smoke, titanium, deep teal and eggplant—all major trends in some of the hottest fashion week shows. I spotted this Fashionista walking to her journalism class on an early Monday morning! How she got that vivacious glow so early, I can’t tell you, but I can tell you how to get her look!

Name: Maggie Kierstead

Major: Journalism

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?

Maggie Kierstead: My shirt and sweater are both from Madewell. My jeans are J Brand Jeans. My shoes are Ecote from Urban Outfitters and my bag is from ASOS!

CF: Where do you find your style inspiration?

MK: I am definitely inspired by street style. I find the images in magazines like Vogue and W absolutely beautiful. I don’t picture myself wearing the clothing modeled in those magazines. I get my true style inspiration from the people that I encounter around campus and the city that have a unique style.

CF: What fall trend are you most excited about?

MK: This fall I love floral denim, and as we approach the winter months I find myself becoming obsessed with oversized sweaters. They are so cozy!

CF: I agree! How would you describe your personal style?

MK: I would say my personal style is a blend of Northwest preppy and minimalist. I very frequently wear collared shirts under sweaters, but as an accessory! I can be found in anything easy to throw on!

CF: What is your go-to item?

MK: My dark denim chambray from Madewell is my go-to item of late. You can pair it with anything and throw on a scarf or a necklace and never fail to look put together!

How To: To get this adorably preppy look, you need a stylish button-down, preferably with a pattern! It does not need to be gingham print; any pattern would work perfectly! Personally, I like J.Crew’s Liberty Perfect Shirt in every design; they feature the big colors of the season and are super cute! Then, match your fun, colorful top with a pair of jeans. This Fashionista is wearing the very comfortable and popular J Brand Jeans! Since you already are playing with pattern and color, I wouldn’t recommend corduroy for this look, but maybe a light or neutral colored denim as seen on this Fashionista. Check out the skinnies on J Brand Jeans! You can go with any color depending on your top’s pattern. The very chic and funky accessory-sweater should be a neutral color, such as the one seen on this Fashionista—a mix of dark purples and browns. I suggest Free People’s Marled Cables Pullover or the Shaggy Knit Pullover, both cozy and fashionable choices to complete this look! A pair of leather booties to top it off will help you fully achieve this Fashionista’s flawless look!
