FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Nako Nakatsuka

This week's Fashionista pairs the vibrance of Japan's streetsyle and gives it her own American twist. The Japan native and now New York City student (ironically) pairs a stars-and-stripes sheer with tie-dyed denim and a motorcycle jacket. Pairing an airy blouse with androgynous accesories, Nakatsuka certainly know how to strike the right balance in an everyday outfit.

She feels at home in bright colors, shiny fabrics and bedazzled accessories, Nakatsuka says. But this Fashionista also knows how to nail NYC chic. Mixing a hard-edged leather jacket with an earthy pair of moccasin boots, Nako borrows the best from every style genre and creates a work of art that is her wardrobe.

Name: Nako Nakatsuka

Major: Chemistry

Year: Senior

CollegeFashionista: Do you find that you dress differently while you're at home in Japan versus while you're at school in New York?

Nako Nakatsuka: Not really, I think my wardrobe consists of the same style of vibrant colors and shiny spandex but most often when I'm home I'll be more comfortable wearing clashing colors and idiosyncratic combinations, because anything is acceptable in Tokyo. I tend to tone it down a notch when I come back to NYC.

CF: If you had to whittle down your wardrobe to five pieces, what would they be?

NN: Five pieces?! If we're excluding underwear: fluorescent spandex, a black bodycon dress, cowboy boots, a nice cut shirt and a leather jacket

CF: Do you think your personal style reflects aspects of your personality? How so?

NN: I like vibrant colors, sparkles, tie dye and anything that's bright and unusual. I think that may reflect unique and vibrantly crazy aspects of my personality.

CF: What's the most valuable style advice you've received?

NN: America taught me that wearing navy/black and sometimes brown/black together is sadly, unacceptable.

CF: Describe your style in one word.

NN: Dynamic.

How To: Get this Fashionista's look by pairing a feminine, sheer blouse with edgy denim and a strong-shouldered leather jacket.
