The maxi dress made its statement appearance last summer and left a lasting impression on women of all ages. Now we are seeing maxi dresses transform from their standard colorful flow to a variety of new materials, colors, cuts and patterns. You can find maxis with a high-low skirt — dresses that end at the thigh and have a sheer overlay to the floor — maxis with an open back or belted waist. These new dresses are easy to dress up while adding both a comfortable and flattering touch. I found this Fashionista leaving DC’s Serendipity 3. She was dressed in confidence and a unique maxi dress with exotic accessories, perfect for a night out.

Name: Sanna Taskinen

Major: International Affairs

Year: Freshman

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing?

Sanna Taskinen: My dress is from Phanuel, the elephant bracelet is vintage and my belt is Forever 21. My shoes are from Guess and earrings Ralph Lauren. My rings are from a boutique in St. Marks, NY, and the small necklace I am wearing is Dogeared.

CF: Who is your favorite fall-look designer?

ST: Zac Posen’s fall collection definitely has to be my favorite. I love the femme-fatale pieces that also have an element of surprise in the structures of the clothes that can be trendy, but timeless at the same time.

CF: What is your go-to piece for this fall?

ST: My combat boots from Madewell! In the fall and winter I hold comfort as a top priority. I also love that the small heel helps me go either casual or dressy.

CF: Where do you get your style inspiration?

ST: Working in a boutique called Adrift in Laguna Beach this past year has opened my eyes to looking great without having to reveal much. My favorite look is to have some sheer so that my silhouette can be revealed in a subtle, but feminine way.

CF: How do you go about picking an outfit?

ST: To be honest, in the morning I am usually pretty tired before class so I start with one item that I know I want to wear. Whether it is an accessory or a shirt, I work my look around that one piece rather than planning outfits in my head. It’s all about one step at a time to create the overall look!

CF: What trend are you looking most forward to this fall?

ST: Denim vests are the perfect way to join the jean trend, but also to play around with it. It’s a great staple item.

How To: Free People has come out with a variety of maxi dresses, all different and chic. Most similar to this Fashionista’s look would be the gorgeous Fairytale Crochet Maxi. The intricate lace overlay makes it more than a simple dress, but a classy and styllish piece. Paired with gold jewels, such as NASTY GAL’s Luxor Bracelet or ModCloth’s Spikes World Ring, your outfit would be complete and scream Fashionista.
