There has been an innovative resurgence of menswear-inspired looks this past year, both on the runway and on the street: women have contorted the traditional androgynous look to add strength to extreme femininity.

The Louis Vuitton spring 2012 ready-to-wear collection may appear to be extremely feminine and Ladylike, but it is clear that head designer Marc Jacobs was inspired by menswear elements. Jacobs mixed traditional menswear structure amid the floral lace and fragile tulle. He completely redesigned a men’s collar to create a lace bib-like accessory that adds a feminine touch to even the hardest looks (i.e. Lily Collins on the cover of Nylon Magazine).

Fashionista Schaefer Felix knows exactly how to use menswear-inspired pieces to create a playful, feminine look. The layered collars and knits combined with short shorts remind me of Alexa Chung’s famous style. Alexa Chung, two-time winner of the British Fashion Award’s British Fashion Award, is muse to countless high-end fashion designers and Fashionistas alike, so clearly androgyny is the way to go.

Name: Schaefer Felix

Major: Hospitality Administration

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: How would you describe your personal style?

Schaefer Felix: I'd describe my personal style as girly with a tomboy twist — you can usually find me in a men's button up, cozy sweater, flats and lots of jewelry.

CF: How has your style changed since coming to school in Boston?

SF: Although I'm from beachy Southern California, I've always felt like my style is more geared toward east-coast living — I rarely leave the house without throwing a sweater and scarf over whatever I'm wearing! I think my style now incorporates more preppy and classic pieces than it did before I moved to Boston.

CF: Where do you find your style inspiration?

SF: I find my style inspiration from various blogs that range from women's clothing to arts and crafts, interior design, food and menswear. I do love a good menswear blog! I also look toward people like Kate Bosworth and Emma Stone for inspiration.

CF: What are your favorite must-haves for summer?

SF: My must-haves for summer are a sheer button-down and a worn-in denim jacket!

How To: To get this girly tomboy look, layer a striped knit over a semi-sheer collared shirt. Then add a pair of short shorts and a leather jacket for a cool downtown vibe. Accessorize with chunky jeweled bracelets and a mixed metal watch. You could wear a simple pair of black flats during the day, like Schaefer, and switch to a (very Alexa) pair of chunky platforms to go out at night. In terms of beauty, keep a simple, natural look and add some polished curls to really set the look.
