Remixing clothing items already in your wardrobe is a budget-friendly way for any Fashionista to piece together new outfits year-round. By wearing your favorite pair of shorts from warmer days of yore with some tights, you can remix your shorts as an easy alternative to pants this winter. It’s a great way to show off some leg while still staying warm and appropriate for the season. And pairing your shorts and tights combination with a bulky sweater provides great contrast to an outfit. This week’s Fashionista did just that with a cozy-looking turtleneck sweater over black shorts and tights.
Name: Tina Thomas
Major: Neurobiology/Physiology and Psychology
Year: Junior
CollegeFashionista: What items have you worn the most this semester?
Tina Thomas: All of my tights and chunky sweaters.
CF: Any particular style of tights?
TT: I wear classic black tights a lot but I also have colorful ones like red and purple.
CF: Where do you like to shop?
TT: I like to shop at H&M, Zara, and Urban Outfitters.
CF: How would you describe your personal style?
TT: I would describe it as casual and kind of urban. I like to wear a lot of boots and really casual things like sweaters and shorts.
CF: What three items do you consider essential for the winter wardrobe?
TT: Comfortable, oversized sweaters. Boots are really important to my wardrobe; I like big black boots and oxfords, especially boots that look like oxfords. Scarves, too; I love infinity scarves.
How To: Wearing tights underneath your shorts can easily be adapted to many different styles. If you’re going for a grungier look, try cut-off denim shorts, like these from Abercrombie & Fitch. Tweed shorts are a great preppy option to wear with tights; try this pair from Dillard’s. If you’d like to add a pop of color to your shorts and tights combo, you can do like Tina does with some bright tights, or with a pair of brightly-colored shorts. As for accompanying footwear, take a cue from Tina and try some oxford-inspired ankle boots.
