Never have I witnessed someone pull off a sweater over the shoulders quite as effortlessly as this Fashionisto. This detail was exactly what caught my eye about his style. His outfit would have been stylish enough without it, but the sweater is what takes the outfit to another level. It just goes to show how a little extra effort can go a long way.
Name: Jonny Mendez
Major: Fashion Design
CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing today?
Jonny Mendez: A boat neck pullover, a green oxford button-down and shorts, all from American Apparel. These shoes are from Target, my bag is an American Tourist bag from the thrift store, my watch is from Timex and my glasses are from Warby Parker.
CF: What style advice would you give to fellow college men?
JM: Wear stuff that fits. I feel that fit and quality are really important. Guys don’t really like to go shopping as much as girls, so I tell my guy friends that they don’t have to have tons of clothes, just get quality stuff. Get staples like button-down shirts, a good pair of jeans, a cool jacket, a couple of ties and maybe a blazer. You know, the essentials. Get quality stuff that you can wear for a few years.
CF: When would you say you became interested in fashion?
JM: Ever since I was a little kid I remember I wanted to wear cool clothes and look older. I was around 10 or 11 when I started to realize that clothes were really rad. I didn’t really know how to pick out clothes but I knew that I wanted to stand out a little bit. I definitely had phases in my life when I started wearing really wild things.
CF: I think everyone goes through that phase at least once! Where do you find inspiration for your style?
JM: I like ’60s Ivy League style. There’s this book called Take Ivy that was published in the ’60s by a Japanese publisher. They basically went around Ivy League campuses to photograph what everyone was wearing. I like to look at that for inspiration.
How To: To emulate this Fashionisto’s effortless style wear this pair of drawstring shorts from Urban Outfitters, an oxford button-down from Gap and wrap this cotton pullover from American Apparel around your shoulders, like the cherry on top.
