FASHIONISTO SPOTLIGHT: Sam Temple

I saw a show the other day, a woman turned her attic into a closet with a full wall of shoes. In a cliché way women have been marked as obsessive shoe lovers; “they make or break an outfit”. Sam Temple, this week’s Fashionisto, reminds all of us that shoes loving is not a gender specific term.

Name: Sam Temple
Major: Retail Merchandising
Year: Junior

College Fashionista: When did you discover fashion?

Sam Temple: When I was three years old, one of my neighbors (who I thought was the coolest kid ever cause he was a “big kid”) gave me a pair of his old all-black Nike’s and I thought they were the coolest things I’d ever seen. So cool that for my fourth birthday, I had my mom draw them on my cake. When I was five years old I met Rayvon in my kindergarten class. I thought he was awesome because he had all these crazy colors of this shoe called the Nike Air Max TM. Ray and I shared a love for sneakers and he introduced me to rap music. Rap, R&B, etc. [the music industry] has always been trendsetters in the fashion industry which translated into urban streetwear and that’s kind of where I found myself as I grew up.

CF: How would you describe your style?

ST: My style is pretty eclectic and I think the reason for that is because it’s so geared towards my footwear. The way I view my style is like a comfortably tailored, simplified take on urban streetwear. To break that down, I wear my clothes tailored to fit me, which is more of a slim cut, but it also has to be comfortable so that it is not restricting. I also like my outfits to be simple, accenting one part. For me, it’s mostly my shoes: nothing too flashy up top so the shoes are the focal point of my outfit.

CF: What is one item in your closet you can’t live without?

ST: Quai 54 Nike Air Jordan 1 Ruff ‘n Tuff. It’s my favorite shoe I own and probably the most rare. Every “sneakerhead” has to have their favorite pair stocked in the closet.

CF: What is your favorite item to shop for?

ST: Sneakers. In my opinion, your shoes are what complete your outfit; they can make or break your look. But maybe I just think that because I love shoes and it’s the first thing I see when I look at people so I place a heavy importance on them in my own style.

How To: This Fashionisto works with simple basics. He’s wearing a slim plain white Levi Strauss button-up and grey speckled CPO shorts likewise. His shoes are Urban ECP Miami Gel Lyte III asics x Ronnie Fleg. Get his look with a white button-up, grey shorts and shoes that add a pop of color.
