“Money does not grow on trees,” is a truth that we hear all too often from our parents. It’s during times that we have to choose to be responsible with our finances that we hear that phrase echoing in our heads. As much as we may not like it, learning to save money is a valuable life skill. We may feel like we have to deprive ourselves of our wants, but there is no need to do that when we learn the craft of money-saving. Last week, I interviewed a Fashionista who knew a thing or two about shopping on a college budget. This week, I decided to ask this Fashionisto how he saves money on all of his favorite buys.

Name: Yair Banuelos

Major: Business

Year: Junior

CollegeFashionista: If you were given only $50 to buy a whole outfit, where and how would you spend it?

Yair Banuelos: I would go to H&M because they have great offers. I would buy a $10 shirt there. Then, I would go to Express to buy shorts because they’re $29.99 right now, I would know because I was there the other day. And I guess the last $10 would go to sunglasses at H&M.

CF: You really know how to shop! Speaking of, what stores do you like to shop at most?

YB: I like to shop at Express, H&M, Nordstrom, Macy’s and Forever 21. I go to Calvin Klein sometimes, but I only go to their outlet stores.

CF: What do you appreciate most about men’s fashion?

YB: I like that men’s fashion is more casual compared to what it was in the ’50s and ’60s. It’s not about wearing suits and stuff like that every day. Now you can be casual but still be fashionable.

How To: Seeing as we’re talking about saving-money, I’ve taken up the challenge of finding great pieces under $50 that resemble this Fashionisto’s style. For a hot summer day, pair this Express graphic T-shirt with nicely fitted shorts from Forever 21. For a night time look, wear this T-shirt and these jeans, both from H&M.
