LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS: Earth Wind and Fire

During a season that is defined by golden rust foliage and a cooling climate, it is only expected for people to layer up and earth tone out their wardrobe. All across the District, Fashionistos are dusting off their winter coats, buttoning up those cardigans, and bringing out their favorite v-neck sweater for another year of frigid fashions. While basic shades like grey and black are always a must-have, it is always refreshing to see guys take to the trees and rock those olive greens, clays, golds and rusty orange hues.

I spotted this festive Fashionisto hanging out in University Yard and was instantly drawn to his outfit. Synonymous to the changing autumn leaves scattered across the courtyard, his handsome burnt orange sweater by Polo Ralph Lauren is a striking complement to his surroundings. This color is great because it is a bold color pop but it is neutral enough to be worn with other fun colors. His purple Brooks Brothers check sport shirt is a fantastic choice to pair with the sweater. The purple shades create a color blocking effect with the burnt orange and the pattern breaks up the bold color contrasts. This juxtaposition keeps the pairing from clashing or being too loud. This Fashionisto accessorized with his AMAZING leather Ralph Lauren driver shoes to further accent the ensemble’s burnt orange pigment. The navy and orange ribbon feeding into the loafer’s buckle is a great detail to add to any outfit, However, matching the orange stripe in the ribbon to the v neck color really highlights the distinct orange hue and pulls the whole look together. Obviously a master of the mix and match, this dapper dude shows how to coordinate colors while also breaking up the monotony with the contrasting stripe and check prints and the navy and royal purple shades. This trendsetter continues to show off his awesome autumn apparel with his Andrew Marc chocolate leather and shearing coat. The brown hue of the jacket complements the striking shades of the other pieces without distracting from the rest of the outfit.  This dapper dude polishes off his spectacular ensemble with dark wash Joe’s Jeans, a Panerai watch and Paul Smith glasses.

Want to reproduce this Fashionisto’s color blocked style confection? Thankfully color blocking can be easily executed with most winter apparel. If you lean towards the preppy look, Rugby Ralph Lauren has a great orange wool sweater with suede accent patches and Polo has a comfy-chic half-zip option. Sweater vests, when worn correctly, can look spectacular as a layered color contrast. Barbour carries a lovely orange vest that would look great with any deep royal colored button-down and a fun scarf. But if you dare to don the vest, the outfit will usually need a blazer or other type of statement outerwear piece to achieve the same overall polished look as the Fashionisto pictured. The Fashionisto’s exact Brooks Brother’s shirt is available online and comes in a few other vibrant colors. J. Crew has come out with a fantastic royal teal and  navy check oxford this season, which would also be a great contrast against a heather, smoky orange. If you prefer stripes to check prints, Polo Ralph Lauren has some deep hued vertical stripe shirts that would also look great. Barbour and Hugo Boss offer great classic leather coats that will leave you looking hot while staying toasty. Sadly, Ralph Lauren no longer produces this exact style of driver shoe, but there are tons of other great driver styles that are equally as spectacular. Salvatore Ferragamo offers driving loafer in many different styles and Tod’s has some fun colored options for the more adventurous dressers.  For those who love fun color combinations and casual footwear, Opening Ceremony offers special edition Sperry Topsiders that exude a similar look to the featured Fashionisto’s flats.
