As college students, it is almost a given that at any point we are probably close to broke. Being in college is expensive and sometimes clothes have to take a backseat to the bigger necessities of a college experience (what exactly those necessities are, I’ll let you determine). However, this week’s Fashionista is giving us a lesson in the ramen noodles of clothing: Goodwill. Goodwill and other thrift stores may put off some, but if you’re willing to search you can come out with some great pieces at super cheap prices. And the best stuff to search for at thrift stores are trends that are making a comeback.
What caught my eye about this outfit was the denim jumper. When I was younger, outside of jeans, of course, I hated all things denim. Denim shirts, vests, anything seemed so outdated and, to me at least, looked like an extension of the mom jean. However, in the last couple of years denim has made a complete comeback and transformed itself into a versatile look that can range from sexy to professional. Last spring this trend definitely peaked. D&G was one of the more memorable designers to really embrace denim. Their SS 2010 ad campaign featured models in head to toe denim and celebrities rocked the trend all summer long. This year denim is staying strong with designers like Derek Lam and Stella McCartney featuring the look in their spring and summer collections.
Now this Fashionista is not wearing any of these designers. In fact, she paid a total of three dollars for her denim look, all because of Goodwill. Denim is a perfect example of a comeback trend that is likely in full supply at thrift stores. This Fashionista completes her look by mixing up the textures with a corduroy jacket, knit scarf, opaque tights and leather lace up boots. Denim is versatile not only by style, but also by season. While the designers I talked about showed it in their spring and summer collections, the thick fabric is great for winter too, particularly when layered like our Fashionista has done.
Hint: So feel free to focus on those college “necessities” for a while, and the next time you shop, skip the mall and try a thrift store. You never know what you might find and while you may have to do some searching, that can easily become a fun day with friends.
