STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Summer Style, In Short

Jean (noun): One: hard-wearing trousers made of denim or other cotton fabric for informal wear; Jeans, (used with a plural verb): a. blue jeans.

Am I the only one to ever question dictionary definitions?

While I do admit that a large portion of my childhood consisted of running around in beat, holey-but-less-than-holy jeans, my style has tremendously evolved to incorporate the classic closet-must in ways that by far surpass informal wear. Serving as the most practical and nonchalant staple, blue jeans express modesty and simplicity in a timeless manner. Could a Fashionista seriously ask for more?

After considering decades of modes and trends, I think it’s entirely safe to say that denim trends reflect seasonal changes, as well as cultural and social developments. Evolving from awkwardly cropped mom jeans to mid-calf cuffs and finally to total cut-offs (Jessica Simpson in The Dukes of Hazzards, anyone?), tried true blues have gone full circle throughout the course of the 20th and 21st centuries.

While seasonal changes pave the way for the transformation of closet staple pieces, denim styles are no exception. Welcome the tried true blue’s summer counterparts: timeless cut-off and cuffed crops. Serving as the ultimate warm weather staple, denim shorts have continuously added a cool and effortless feel to styles ranging from vintage rocker-chic to modern prepster. The key to cut-off customization: play with patterns, textures and colors to emphasize individuality and self-expression.

With neons and bright hues pouring onto store shelves this summer season, it is undeniable that the colored denim trend has trumped all other shorty styles. After several years and numerous seasons of alternating hues, candy-colored bottoms are making up for their lack of length with bolder-than-ever colors this summer.

Taking her try at the color-coated denim trend, this Fashionista simultaneously showcased her love for color-blocking. Pairing her burgundy bottoms with a white chiffon blouse, this Fashionista allowed her colored shorties to be the focal point. The sheer top’s lace collar adds a vintage feel to the ensemble, also emphasized by this Fashionista’s choice of rustic metallic accessories.

Exemplifying a perfectly classic denim-inspired look, this Fashionista relied on her vibrant burgundy bottoms to create a balanced color-block ensemble. While more venturesome Fashionistas may opt for a completely contrasting top for a total shock-effect, this Fashionista created a soft look with her delicate blouse choice.

The simple outfit – that looks anything but – is perfect for Fashionistas who habitually hit the snooze button three, four or five times in the morning (guilty!). I know I’m not the only one who thinks we could all use some help pulling together last minute outfits for early summer classes!
