Top designers this past spring exhibited many common trends, and several of them were all about showing their stripes. Christian Dior’s were bold and heavy, Marc Jacobs’s were classic and simple and Dolce&Gabbana gave us stripes of various sizes and colors. Whether horizontal or vertical, thick or skinny, stripes of all sorts came out to walk the runways. And it hasn’t taken long for this high fashion style to transfer to ready-to-wear clothing.
On a rare sunny day in what seems to have been a week of never-ending rain here in Tampa, I took a stroll around Hyde Park through some of my favorite shops. Along the way I passed this fabulous Fashionista sporting her very own striped attire. Her horizontal striped maxi in fun, vibrant colors was perfect for a casual shopping trip on a warm day. Her dress is definitely right on-trend but the thick vertical stripe keeps her look fresh as it breaks the side-to-side pattern and elongates her figure. She paired her dress perfectly with a simple black Marc Jacobs satchel and Tory Burch sandals. Her outfit’s simplicity overall allowed her stripes to stand out as the star of the ensemble.
The best part about stripes as a trend is their versatility as a pattern. You can wear these lovely lines on basically any item, shoes and handbags included. As the runways have shown us as well, there are endless designs, styles and ways in which stripes are patterned onto single items and incorporated into outfits. For example, try this Brandy Melville skirt for a more subtle striped look. If you’re ready to go big and bold, this smock dress from ASOS is perfect. For a super funky take on stripes, dare to strut around in these Forever 21 pants! Oh and Fashionistos, this one is for you too! Try a cool tank like this one from Urban Outfitters with shorts or jeans to casually pull stripes into a daily look.
Stripes are a timeless trend. They look good on women of all ages, and guys as well. So embrace this look and bring it into everyday outfits in your own way. Mix them with cool prints, sail on with nautical styles and even go full on jailhouse! It’s time to walk the line, Fashionistas/os!
