STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Jean Jackets are Back

We all have our favorite sweatshirts bearing our schools name, sports teams or mascots, but we often save them for the days when looking put together is not our top priority. Spending our days studying for midterms in the library means we need to dress comfortable, but style should not be lost as well. Combining your favorite sweatshirt with a classic jean jacket and scarf gives a stylish edge to your favorite study outfit.

This Fashionista was able to pair her favorite sweatshirt with a scarf and a jean jacket, allowing her to look presentable and feel comfortable while studying in the library. Instead of unattractive sweat pants, a pair of leggings, like these Liquid Leggings from Victoria's Secret, are comfortable and allow your outfit to look stylish rather than sloppy. Opting for a pair of tall gray suede boots instead of chunky Uggs balances out the bulky sweatshirt with slimmer looking footwear. A book bag with a fun print, like the Aztec Pattern Backpack, is great to carry all the study materials necessary to ace your midterms. This Fashionista is wearing the iconic Burberry cashmere scarf, but any long chunky scarf will look chic when paired with a classic jean jacket.

The last jean jacket I owned was bedazzled, tacky, and made me refuse to even try one on during the past 12 years. After spotting this Fashionista, I want to find one in a flattering dye and style for everyone I know. Her jean jacket is worn with love from American Eagle, but this spring staple is showing up everywhere. From the classic Levi's trucker jacket to oversized Madewell rambler jacket, denim jackets are all the rage this season. These jackets are almost magical. They are able to make an outfit of leggings and a sweatshirt look stylish and chic, and when layered with a floral spring dress, look laid back and relaxed. Available in a wide variety of cuts, washes and lengths, websites like ASOS offer a wide range of takes on the classic jean jacket. While my last one was a tacky disaster (there may have been some cheetah print lining, thinking back to it), I am definitely going to spend my break finding the perfect jean jacket for the spring.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Denim For Days

Winter is officially in full force here in the Pacific Northwest, and naturally, the gloomy weather has brought out some of the darker shades in our closet. One piece that every Fashionista/o needs in his or her closet is a great pair of denim jeans. Denim jeans have been deemed a timeless staple because you can essentially wear them with just about anything. Dress them up, dress them down, or wear them with a plain white tee and you’ve got the classic look. This statement also holds true to their counterpart, the denim shirt.

For this drizzling school day, this Fashionista paired her oversized printed denim shirt with black tights and brown boots. To top it off, she cinched her shirt with a brown belt at the waist. Curious to find out where she snagged such a unique print on her blouse, I decided to ask her how she came upon this piece. Our little Fashionista let me in on her secret; it was actually her mom’s! This week’s Fashionista took her fashion forward style to a whole new level when she brought her classic denim to the top.

A denim shirt is no different than any other button up shirt that you would typically wear with pants or trousers. To recreate the classic style, wear your denim shirt tucked or untucked with fitted black pants or khakis. This clean cut long sleeved denim shirt from American Apparel would look fantastic with fitted khakis or corduroy pants. For an easygoing and comfortable look, substitute a Jesse James shirt by MINKPINK for a cardigan and wear it over a dress or leggings.

Style Guru Bio: Tessa Millman

Ciao Fashionistas!

My name is Tessa Millman, and I’m going into my junior year as an English and Rhetoric major at Binghamton University. While there is no major for fashion at Binghamton, there are plenty of Fashionistas there contrary to the popular beliefs about upstate New York! I like to believe my personal style is Mary Kate Olsen meets bohemian-chic, or anything along those lines. My favorite pieces of clothing range from vintage grateful dead shirts to a white cotton button down blouse. I work at Free People and recently finished an internship experience with Carolina Herrera corporate. Alike the famous sartorialist, Scott Schuman, I hope to allow people at Binghamton University to feel fabulous with their street style on a daily basis.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Punk Rockin’ Studs

Initially entering the fashion world as a rebuttal to mainstream music and materialism, punk style popularized the leather jacket, ripped t-shirts and an overwhelming black silhouette accented with lots and lots of studs and spikes. Ironically, what was once an intentional defense against mainstream culture has, itself, become an undeniably powerful addition to mainstream fashion, and one that has become a personal favorite of mine.

So, naturally, the first thing I spotted on this Fashionista were her fabulous studded sandals (similar to these by Guess). She paired them perfectly with a bold plaid shirt, cut off black shorts (found here or done yourself) and a white tank.

The most important thing to remember when incorporating this trend is subtlety. Choose one item to highlight, and use it to really complement the rest of your outfit.
Using a plaid button-up like she did was a perfect way to combine two trends seamlessly.

Also, great news, this trend doesn’t have to be expensive. You can easily punk up a pair of black skinnies or shorts with studs found at your local craft store.

Style Guru Bio: Amanda Liberatore

Hello Fashionistas! I’m Amanda, one of the new style gurus here at the University of Illinois for this summer. I am going to be a junior (so weird…I am starting to feel old!) and I am double majoring in English and communication. After I finish up at the U of I, I plan on going into publicity or print journalism. Ideally, I would absolutely love to work for a fashion magazine like Vogue, Elle, or InStyle; I have been reading magazines like that for years! Any time I want to be updated on any new trends or fads in the fashion world, I always turn to the latest issue of one of those magazines. I am so excited to update all of you on the latest summer styles and trends that I have been seeing on Fashionistas on campus! This summer, I think that the key staple to any wardrobe is the typical fun, flirty summer dress. Whether it’s adding cute espadrille sandals for an afternoon graduation party or a classic blazer for a night out, a sundress is a must-have for any Fashionista’s summer wardrobe. Personally, my favorite thing about fashion is that it is always progressing, evolving, and moving forward! Every season brings out a new trend and a new excuse for all of us to update our wardrobes. U of I is a great place to see everybody’s own personal styles; after a walk down Green Street or through the Quad, it is so easy to find inspiration for your own closet. Summer is such a fun and relaxing time of the year, so rock your own summer styles with confidence! I can’t wait to check out these fun trends with all of you and to show you what I have been seeing in Chambana this summer!
