STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Color Rule Breaking

In grade school, you are taught the rules of color and how you are suppose to abide by them. Certain colors match and other's don't. It is difficult to imagine that now because you are encouraged to break them. By doing so, you juxtapose your colors for a fantastic outfit. Enter this week's Fashionista. 

This Fashionista caught my eye by the very subtle way she clashed her colors and made it work. Recreate this look by purchasing your own bright pair of bottoms. Here in Texas it’s November and we are still in 90-degree weather. If the weather allows your to wear shorts then take advantage of the fact that you can find them on sale anywhere this time of year. If not The Limited has a fantastic corduroy alternative. Mustard is the new black for this season so buying it would a guarantee a variety of options.

The smoking shoe has been all the rage this season. There are countless options in any store you choose to purchase them in. This Fashionista’s pair had tassels on them and gave them a new spin. LuLu‘s version is affordable and can recreate the same effect.

With the colder seasons looming, color blocking can be made easier by the extra layers required. Think of all the rules you were taught as a child and break them for that amazing outfit.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Wrapped Up

As my outerwear obsession continues, I have spotted tons of unique ways to stay warm on campus this fall. This week’s Fashionista dresses for a temperate fall day by layering a lightweight knit jacket with a scarf and a simply cut skinny jean. Scarves are the perfect accessory for cold weather and can work wonders in bringing your outfit from bland to colorfully and texturally complete.

This Fashionista uses her burgundy scarf to add warmth to her outfit while also picking up on her blue top to tie the whole outfit together. Layered over a cream-colored, asymmetrically structured knit jacket and a royal blue top, this Fashionista layers her outfit accordingly for a mild fall day. Her dark jeans are a staple for any wardrobe, along with a versatile pair of J.Crew nude flats with bow detailing.

To create an outfit like this for yourself, start with an asymmetrical knit jacket in a basic color like this heather gray jacket by Max & Mia. It will double as outerwear for warmer days or another layer when the cold weather really sets in. Top it off with your scarf of choice. Use this accessory to stay warm and more importantly bring extra flair to your ensemble. My favorite type is an infinity scarf, like this multicolored chevron scarf available online from Etsy. If you want something similar to this Fashionista, try this jacquard printed scarf from Zara or this scarf by Ecote available in two different patterns at Urban Outfitters. One of the best scarves that I have ever invested in is the Murfee Scarf by Lilly Pulitzer, availble in a ton of fun patterns online. There are infinite styles, colors, patterns and textures of scarves available these days and so many different ways to wear them, so add a few to your wardrobe and you will find endless ways to fashionably bundle up this season.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Little Vest That Could

Cutting to the chase: denim vests are perfection. They’re even better when they’re from Madewell. The icing on the cake? Finding this vest for $14 at a New York thrift store. Meet my red, white and blue Fashionista. She began her outfit with a chiffon red and white striped blouse. Pairing dark denim on the bottom with some high brown boots, this stylish undergrad is ready to conquer the day.

What caught my attention was that she didn’t stop there. While the striped chiffon and dark denim would have made a very classy outfit, she decided to be an over-achiever and turn this ensemble into A+ material. This Madewell denim vest is the ying to her chiffon’s yang. It is the perfect shade to be worn on top of eye-catching patterns. This Fashionista took a mainstream piece (the vest) and turned it into the ultimate accessory.

And she wasn't done yet. To complete the look, she added a chunky, bedazzled leaf necklace, which hangs on a beautifully vintage-colored chain. Viola! You cannot tell me she doesn’t look adorable. Classic pieces coming together to create a modernized feel will put a smile on any fashion-lover’s face.

To put this beautiful vest into perspective, you can buy one right now for $88, so this Fashionista’s thrifty find was kind of a big deal. Any chiffon shirt would work to create this look, but I like the idea of using patterns. Polyvore has creative chiffon patterns that aren’t overly busy. Dark denim is a must when flaunting a light denim vest. As for her brown boots, Charlotte Russe has a great boot selection (and usually some sort of BOGO deal or discount as well).

Snaps for Miss Patriotic. The pieces she wears would have been great standing on their own, but they come together to create a truly original outfit. For her success, I whole-heartedly believe she has that little denim vest to thank.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Rewind Your Wardrobe

As much as I love fall and being able to layer knits on top of knits with a great pair of boots, it pains me to put all of my summer clothes into storage. But there are a few ways to take summer styles into fall so you can utilize your wardrobe any time of year.

My favorite way to transfer your summer closet to fall is by layering a knit skirt or dress under a chunky sweater. A skirt like this one from Nordstrom goes perfectly with a pair of tights and a chunky Topshop sweater. Add on a pair of boots and your summer skirt has been introduced into your cold weather wardrobe. 

A bodycon skirt or dress is a basic piece that every Fashionista needs in her closet. It’s a blank canvas that can be worn during any season with any accessories. Try it with a studded vest from Forever 21 and ankle boots this fall, and a floral scarf and sandals during summer.

Transitioning a floral wrap dress is just as easy as a basic. This dress from LuLu’s looks autumn chic underneath a faux fur vest. With a pair of cognac boots from Steve Madden, your dress is no longer just for sunny days.

Layering all of these pieces is a great way to keep your wallet happy. Cycling pieces from season to season will give your look a great contrast and you don’t have to shove all of your stuff into the back of your closet!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Cable Knits!

My grandmother always told me, “when it gets cold out make sure you put a sweater on.” Well, this season it may be wise to listen to her. This Fashionisto is rocking a grey All Saints cable knit sweater with black Acne jeans. He has also paired a black Baggu backpack, black Martin Margiela shoes and a red Supreme hat to top off his look.


Sweaters are definitely in this fall season and it's up to you how you choose to wear it. Do you like his sweater but think you can’t pull off this mod look? Try something different! Pair a colorblock sweater with some straight leg denims and Chuck Taylor’s to pull off more of a relaxed style that will be a perfect outfit for the fall. Or do you want something you can wear to the next football game? Try a red cable knit sweater, medium to dark slim denim jeans, and a pair of Clarks for tailgating fun. If you don’t want to pay a big price, take a visit to your local thrift shops – you never know what you may stumble upon. If you’re lucky you may find a vintage “Bill Cosby” sweater that will keep you warm and add lots of color to your fall look.


Ladies, if you’re reading don’t think that sweaters aren’t for you! You can achieve a great sweater look just like the guys. Pair an over-sized sweater with leggings or skinny jeans and riding boots for a look that will have you cozy chic. An easy way to find the right over-sized sweater is to shop with the boys! Purchase smaller sizes in menswear to get the baggy look an easy way.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Continuing Color Blocking

I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite trends from this past year is color blocking. I thought it was so much fun to mix and match different bright colors in the spring and summer to create outfits. Pink and light blue, pink and mint green and coral and tan were some of my favorites. Now it’s winter and those colors are slowly going out of season. What are we supposed to do now?

Take advice from this Fashionista and continue the trend by using cool colors instead of warm. The black and dark blue bring her dress into the fall season, but the white accent at the bottom keep it holding onto that last bit of summer. The bright Denver sun is continually fooling all of us here at DU that it is still summer!

If you’re looking for the same style as this Fashionista but a little more laid back, I found this Diane von Furstenberg Hatsu Dress. I also couldn’t help my excitement for Nordstroms new addition of Topshop and found this Colorblock Illusion dress. This Splendid Stripe Scoop Neck Top from Nordstrom also goes into cool-color overload.

It is easy to dress it up with some heels like this Fashionista did, or keep it casual with some flats or sandals. Have fun with transitioning this trend into the fall season and continue to stand out with your mix-matched colors!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Sleek and Chic Ankle Pants

One of my favorite timeless pieces is the ankle pant. Ankle pants are very sophisticated and slimming at the same time. There's nothing I hate more than pants that are much too long and bunch up at the ankle, and quite frankly, those pants are unflattering. However, when shopping for ankle pants, make sure they hit right at the ankle and don't flare at the bottom. Ankle pants that flare at the bottom tend to create a frumpy look. 

The key to wearing ankle pants is not as much in the pants themselves as it is in the top you pair it with. Ankle pants create a lengthening effect when worn correctly, but if paired with a long top or tunic, they make the person seem stout instead. You want to avoid overbearing the pants with a baggy top or coat as that will create a top-heavy look and make your hips seem larger. 

I love the different choices of ankle pants that are always in stores. Michael Kors carries them in different styles and colors. These black straight leg ankle pants are easy to pair. They can be dressed up with a pair of pumps and a simple blouse, or for a more casual look, worn with flats and a T-shirt. If you're looking for an edgier look, try these snake-print ankle pants. With black pumps and a black leather jacket, you may just be the coolest chick on campus. If you're looking for a simple and comfortable look, try on these J Brand pants and Jeffrey Campbell studded slippers. I would love this combination paired with a fitted — or slightly loose  — band t-shirt. The outfit gives off a very edgy vibe while still effortless. 

Dress them up or down. Either way, they're chic and sleek.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Say Farewell To Summer With A Bang

As I am finally back in Providence, the RISD campus is filled with wonderful reunions and the transition of routines of classes and studio hours. Seeing new faces and old friends has placed such a positive and wonderful vibe around campus. Providence weather has been a bit cooler then usual and as you walk around campus, sweaters and fall accessories are starting to make their debut. However, with the last days of summer, as the leaves are still on the trees, students continue to rock their summer dresses and sandals.

This particular Fashionista stood out to me, with her bold yet playful summer dress and gladiator sandals. A graphic design student at RISD, thie Fashionista carries her laptop and supplies in her wonderful Proenza Schouler sample sale tote as she heads to studio. This Fashionista is wearing a wonderful J.Crew dress, she likes it because in real life, “the colors are kind of alarming.” Bold and vibrant! She is also wearing a wonderful pair of sandals form a store called Country Roads in South Africa! Her sunglasses are also unique and eye-catching! These funky pair of “sunnies” are from a Stella McCartney store in Meatpacking!

This Fashionista and I had a great conversation about her time this past summer in New York, interning at Zac Posen. She learned a lot about the intensity and the dedication it takes to be involved in the industry. Alice says herself, “I learned just how much of a hands-on, art-driven, high-integrity environment a high fashion house of that caliber is.” I think that another great contribution to this street wear outfit is the amount of confidence it can give and make someone feel. Wearing bold statements of color or prints can not only put you on the spotlight as you walk around campus, but shine a particular light of confidence as you walk to and from studio. I think thats another reason why this particular Fashionista stood out to me. She carried a sense of confidence as she walked to studio and I appreciate that. As I have mentioned before, clothing should be someone that not only is comfortable, but makes you feel good in.

If this particular look is inspiring, take contributions from the overall look and create your own spin on it. Go shopping at stores around your campus and look out for pieces that stand out, even when they are sitting on the clothing racks. Look out for a shocking color or textile print. To go along with your confident, bold apparel, add an additional boot with accessories that create another funky element to the look!

So as I continue to say, go out and get inspired. Take on a challenge and wear something vibrant. Say farewell to summer weather with a bang!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Chambray All The Way

This lovely Fashionista is showing a trend that has resurfaced in the last couple months: chambray. This recent trend has a rich long history as a utility fabric. It’s thought that the fabric was created in France in 1595. Chambray is actually the type of fabric it is, a simple weave known as a 1×1 that gives the fabric it’s lightweight feel. It also allows the fabric to be reversible, unlike denim.

Chambray made its foray into American Fashion when the US Navy adopted it as part of the uniform in 1901. Since then it has been popularized by stars such as Marlon Brando, Steve McQueen and James Dean. The durable lightweight fabric made its debut a while ago and it has become a popular extra layer all summer long. You may be asking yourself how you're supposed to wear chambray since (most likely) you're not a sailor or a movie star. Well, I would say that this Fashionista does it quite well. Whether you wear a hambray item as a jacket, or a shirt on top make sure to avoid the dreaded “Canadian Tuxedo” look. Basically don’t wear a chambray top and bottom together. Colored jeans or a fun skirt are always a good idea. Because chambray is a similar color of blue denim it can easily be used as a neutral and therefore can be paired with a whole pallet of colors, patterns and metallics. Because of the popularity of the fabric, you can easily find it Target, who has items ranging from dresses to bags and scarves, and Gap has many different colors and patterns of chambray for the adventurous Fashionista.

Moral of this fashion trend? Chambray is not only a little piece of this nation’s history, but also a wonderful fabric choice.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Not So Regular Denim Shirt

Chambray or denim shirts should be a staple in every Fashionista’s closet. Whether it's worn as a top or a lightweight outerwear piece, it never fails to bring an effortless cool-girl feel to any outfit. The blue jean-like fabric is casual, yet it can add some flair with its layers and texture. It’s a versatile garment, which you can dress up or dress down.

This Fashionista brought it to the next level with an oversized, white floral printed one. The shirt had the starring role as the pop of color and femininity added to the dark ensemble of a black dress, combat boots and leather purse; it’s the perfect combination of sweetness and edginess. 

The next time you shop for a denim shirt, have fun and look for one with a unique, unexpected design such as a printed pattern, studs or leather sleeves. This Fashionista found hers at Goodwill, which shows having patience and an open mind while shopping is worthwhile for scoring such a one of a kind piece.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK:Taking Care of Business

As the dog days of summer disapear and school-time woes begin, the ultimate Fashionista challenge begins: what do I wear to class? Whether it be to an 8:00 am History class or to a 5:30 pm Textiles class, my motto for my college wardrobe has been “dress your best at all times.” After all, you never know when an opportunity will come knocking, and you better be dressed to the nines to greet it! 

This Fashionista must hold much of the same beliefs while she sports a business casual summer ensemble. She takes summer-time basics, short sleeve t's and cutoffs, and introduces the same silohouettes to the world of business casual. Her crisp white shorts are structured and fitted enough to show she's a lady but a great length whether it be for class or to meet with a professor during office hours. Her cream wide necked blouse has an embellishment at the neckline that gives the outfit personality and matches perfectly with the gold buttons on her shorts. She completes the look with pops of color, like any Fashionista dressed in neutrals would. Her pyramid shaped post earrings also have a touch of gold and a coral stone embedded in them that works well with her summer glow!

So as you get ready for class tomorrow morning, think of pairing together some awesome business casual basics like this beautifully detailed ASOS bibbed blouse and capri trousers from J.Crew to take care of some business!

Out with the old and in with the new! Summer sales have taken over as stores get ready to transition from summer to fall. This week’s Fashionista is sure to make a lasting summer impression as this season's trends will soon vanish, leaving us to stash them away or accompany them with a light layer of clothing.

This Fashionista is wearing a skull-embellished tank and high-waist cutoff shorts from LF. She chose a pair of Steve Madden frayed sandals to complete the look. What I love most about her outfit is not only the design, but the opening in the back, giving off a subtle yet feminine vibe. As for accessories, she flaunts a colorful wrist of skulls and white roses. These simple woven bracelets are a perfect summer staple. These lightweight accessories not only keep you cool, but compliment your sun kissed skin as well!

Skulls are coming back in full force this fall. From skull bracelets to graphic tees, skulls are more than just a gothic grunge statement, they have become a staple in every Fashionistas’ closet and jewelry box, causing fashion designers to produce more skull themed pieces. Alexander McQueen, the skull “founder”, seems to be sticking around this fall, debuting a new line of accessories that are bigger and better than ever. The fashion house plans to debut more skull scarfs, sweaters and jewelry. This fall, we will also witness the rise of embellished collars. Whether it’s a blouse, tank or sweater, every top this fall will most likely offer a studded collar option, accompanied by the season’s hottest color, wine. So go ahead and channel your inner gothic girl this fall, pairing your new attitude with the season's hottest trends.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: It’s Surely Shearling

Classes have just begun and even though we’re currently dying from the heat and continuing to dress like it’s the middle of July, the start of school signals fall and fall wear! Although wearing sundresses and shorts is fun, I have to admit I’ve been nostalgically pinning outfits for fall all summer, imagining the apple picking and colorful leaves to match the outfit.

So when I saw this Fashionista wearing all the elements to create that perfect fall ensemble, I had to take note.  Now Colgate students are very familiar with the flannel and boot duo this Fashionista is wearing. These two pieces probably show our school spirit best at football games and tailgates rather than any maroon or Colgate apparel. These classic elements along with her matching red socks already make me more than ready for fall to come.

However, her shearling vest brings this outfit outside the average Colgate box. Shearling vests and jackets are the perfect way to give your outfit a Fashionista boost while still maintaining your warmth and comfort. Both Helmut Lang and Elizabeth & James have black shearling vests in their fall collections. But at a more affordable price range, NastyGal has an adorable shearling jacket and Jack BB Dakota offers a brown shearling vest.
So while you begin to take out your classic Patagonia and boots to welcome the school year, you should consider making room in your fall closet for some shearling outerwear.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Seeing Spots

In fashion. experimenting is always encouraged and is borderline essential in order to discover new trends, clothing favorites and reveal your own personal style. However, there are certain fashion items that always need to be approached with caution, like beloved animal prints. Cheetah, leopard, zebra and more are loved by most but worn correctly by a very small population. Many celebrities have kept the jungle vibe alive, but most of them land an unwanted spot on E! News or Fashion Police because animal worn elegantly instead of trashy is a hard look to pull off. However, there's a little styling secret the stars of Jersey Shore may have missed when they sought out their hot pink leopard and zebra string bikinis, and that's to keep it simple!

This week’s Fashionista rocks a cheetah print frock with simple black sandals and a few stacked bracelets; her outfit is far from boring, yet it doesn’t scream jungle fever. It's times like these when we can really appreciate the one statement piece that's doing all the work for us. A daring animal print in the form of a dress is a perfect homage to the trend without getting too crazy. They're easy because they don't require a whole lot of stying as far as top, bottom and accessories. With an animal print dress, the most additional styling that's necessary is maybe a necklace or bracelets, and maybe a belt; basic enough for anyone to wear and simple enough so no one looks over done.

To get a look like this Fashionista’s, pick one animal print and stick to wearing it in one spot. If you are feeling daring, try this smocked cheetah print dress with a pair of simple sandals, like these black leather T-strap ones to complement the dress. Finally, accesorize with a few gold bangles or a leather watchband. And there you have it, a fierce ensemble minus the Fashion Police on your tail.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Black Out

When searching for Savannah’s most stylish students to feature, it’s no surprise that I would run into Sarah Humphries, a former Style Guru! Sarah’s unique sense of fashion is exactly what makes being at an art school the perfect platform for new trends.

Sarah’s crochet dress is a great summer piece for a Fashionista who isn’t into pastels and florals. While lightweight, it is also perfect for layering throughout the year and can be worn from day to night, or even as a beach cover-up. By layering it with a bra and skirt she takes an evening, sexy look and makes it edgy and daytime appropriate. To get this look, opt for a lightweight crochet or sheer blouse, and then layer it with a pretty piece of lingerie. To stay on trend, try something bright and neon or dainty and floral. For unique knits and do-it-yourself kits, I highly suggest the trendy knitwear from Wool and the Gang.

Another great way to make your summer wardrobe slightly more edgy is with a new, bold hair color. This Fashionista's light pink hair instantly adds a cool factor to any outfit, but is still very sophisticated. Mixed with her dark lipstick and heavy footwear, it is a great light accent to her whole overall look. For Fashionistas who aren't ready to dye so boldly, a few colored highlights are the perfect way to go. More and more, celebrities and style icons are highlighting the under layers of hair with bold purples, blues, and pinks. Look to Katy Perry's ever-changing and chic hairstyles for color inspiration that is always bold and beautiful!

This summer, don't be afraid to keep an edge to your look. Getting dressed for the heat doesn't have to mean sacrificing your favorite pieces. Try lightweight layers and lingerie for daytime wear, and spice up your hair with some color!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Crochet Your Way into May

Don’t you love waking to a beautiful, clear blue sky? That’s what happened to me, and so I dressed accordingly. Flung on a bikini, stuffed an umbrella and towel into my backpack and trundled off to the beach. I’m kidding. It’s April and I live in Harlem. I did dress for what I thought was a warm day, yet the beaming sunny rays had deceived me and the temperatures were shockingly bitter.

I spotted this Fashionista appropriating her warm wardrobe for an unexpected, unwarranted and unappreciated “taste of January” in the thick of spring. Taking a cue from Jay-Z, this student wears (almost) all black everything: a pair of black, skin-tight Joe’s Jeans, a black bandeau top and black Banana Republic open-toed wedge booties. She incorporates spring into her palette, however, as she pairs her somber blacks with a happy pastel pink Urban Outfitters crochet sweater.

The pink sweater, much like this one on 5 inch and up, drapes loosely across her shoulders. The baggy silhouette nicely complements her clinging jeans and top. The crocheted top is the perfect transitional piece: it retains warmth yet doesn’t turn its wearer into a pool of sweat.

Take a cue from the hole-y sartorialist and if the day proves cooler than your heart desired, throw a spring sweater atop a basic pair of jeans and top. Go for something light, like the Camden Knit from NASTY GAL, or nix the sleeves all together and try the textural knit dolman-sleeve sweater from the Gap.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Mix Labels with Affordable Pieces

This Fashionisto’s ability to successfully mix labels with more affordable items is what made me stop him on his way to class. He wore an exclusive Supreme box logo hat and Leaders 1354 x Adidas Originals Forum Mid Moccasin shoes with a simple zipped up hoodie, jeans and a cargo jacket. His basic outfit allowed his unique shoes and accessories to shine, letting them speak for themselves.

It is nice to own designer items, but it can be overwhelming to wear them all at once. Sometimes being decked out head-to-toe in designer items can be tacky; not to mention, it is not an affordable or realistic thing to do on a college budget. Instead, allow your designer pieces to shine on their own like this Fashionisto did. Wear one or two expensive pieces with some basic items. By doing this, you are allowing your unique designer pieces to be showcased.

Mixing designer items with more affordable pieces is my favorite thing to do. I always invest in designer items that I can wear with almost every outfit. If you buy something expensive that goes with everything, you will get the most out of your money. Try buying pieces like a scarf, hat, sunglasses or a handbag. These pieces can make any basic outfit look expensive. It is smart to buy accesories rather than clothes because accesories are usually less expensive and can be worn more often. If some designer pieces that you want are a little out of your price range, don’t forget to check out Ebay for used or even gently used designer items that are less than the retail price. Ebay is also a good place to find some vintage or more exclusive pieces.

A big trend we saw on the runways for this spring, and one that is always a summer staple, is stripes.  And with the temperatures rising in Florida, loose lightweight tops are a must. As Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week comes to an end, trends begin to trickle down to the Fashionistas who strive to exemplify street style. This season, making a statement doesn’t necessarily require one to sport the most outrageous ensembles. Yes, the flower, geometric and color-blocking prints can wait until spring is sprung, but for now, simple may just be our best bet.

Today’s Fashionista sports a safari-inspired utilitarian jacket as seen on runways lof Michael Kors and Donna Karan. This Fashionista’s jacket is equal parts safari-chic and sensible sophistication. In addition to this Fashionista’s trendy coat, she dons a python printed bag. The colored print spices up her neutral ensemble and serves as a fun and practical accessory while trekking to class.

We first heard it when Anne Hathaway’s funny friend in The Devil Wears Prada claims, “Python's hot right now.” Although he was bashed for knowing this fact of fashion, he was right. This year, a multitude of animal prints have made their mark on every trendsetter’s wardrobe. Whether it is a sleek accessory or a leopard printed blouse, animal print is here to stay.

Offset your neutrals with a pop of animal print to make a bold statement. In addition to giving this Fashionista major style points, we must pay her some respect for that awesome hair style she owns. STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Rainy Rendezvous

For most of us, rainy days are a reason to wear our most comfortable yoga pants and long sleeved t-shirt. This Fashionista on the other hand, takes advantage of the opportunity to use this rainy day as a reason to look fabulous. This week’s Fashionista is dressed to impress, looking ready for a rainy rendezvous.

This ensemble of animal print, a black and white paisley patterned umbrella all tied together with black jeggings display this Fashionista’s uncanny ability to battle the rain in campus-chic style. STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Transitional Wardrobe Crisis

Some people have identity crisis and I am having overlapping wardrobe crisis. I am deeply and profoundly torn. I want to wear the fall 2012 looks from London and New York fashion week but it is also the week before spring break, and I am amped up with a major case of spring fever. The concept of jetting off to the beach gives the illusion that it is time to bring out bikinis, sundresses and cut-off shorts. However, the wardrobe conflict continues when we return to the ever blustering weather Philly is sure to produce. That is life right, finding a compromise in a situation that is not ideal.


Who says you can’t have them both? Spring style in weather appropriate outfits. The Fashionista has the right idea by incorporating some warm-weather elements into her winter wardrobe. She takes a cue from Diane von Furstenberg’s fall 2012 collection with a fun color combination wearing a vibrant pink winter coat, purple top and matching purple Longchamp bag. Incorporating a touch of yellow by trading out cozy wool for a floral feathery scarf adds more color and moves towards a lighter feel.


Having a few contradictory clothing items to transfer into the higher temperatures is not a bad idea! I am not only talking about these breezy scarves and bright coats, but floral pants, wool shorts and hot pink blazers that can do double-duty in conflicting climates. Return to Philly with a smooth transition by infusing your winter wardrobe with deceptive spring styles.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Show Off Those Socks!

Showing socks has been a trend Fashionistas just cannot get enough of. We have all seen them somewhere or another, whether they’ve been really high or really low. Socks have been elevated from the realm of undergarments to an actual accessory. The trend may seem new, but think back to Cher in the comedy movie Clueless. Remember that sassy school girl in her knee high socks? Well, the statement sock trend made its come back in spring 2010 and Fashionistas around the world are determined to keep it around.

This week I saw a classmate sporting her over the knee socks on a break from class and I knew she would be the perfect CollegeFashionista to feature for this trend. She pairs her socks with a pair of black leggings for comfort, warmth and contrast, throws on some comfy black boots, a zip-up hoodie and a detailed denim vest. Finally, she finishes off her look with a black cross-body bag. This outfit is the epitome of classroom ready style: quick, easy and cute.

The best thing about this trend is that it isn’t reserved for any specific look or style. Feeling edgy? Try a pair of cut-off shorts with thick printed tights for style and warmth. Top them off with a thick pair of colored socks and combat boots. You can couple this look with a printed tee and heavy statement coat. A little too close to the edge? Try something a little more ladylike: a sheer button-up paired with a circle skirt, sheer tights and thin polka-dot ankle socks for a peek of personality.

These personality socks are finally a trend for everyone, so take advantage of it! Save those plain white footies for the gym and opt for a pair that will show off your style.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Casually Classy

When I spotted this Fashionista in my ethical and sustainable fashion class I was inspired. Influenced by nature and the darker weather we were having, her outfit is representative of the mix of colors nature brought us that day. Simple yet classy, the blend of dark and neutral tones create a great daytime look. It's very rare that I stop to realize the impact nature has on fashion; however, we are constantly incorporating colors, objects and even social factors into our clothing decisions.

This Fashionista's TOMS were the first thing I noticed. Known for their fashionable cause, TOMS gives a pair a shoes for every one that the consumer buys. Giving sustainably to improve the lives of children is highly respected around the world. Nothing is better than being sustainable for a good cause. TOMS are also comfortable and convenient to wear around campus, which is appreciated on a large campus like Colorado State. Casual from the bottom up, this Fashionista decided to incorporate comfort into her complete ensemble.

Causally classy is the the phrase I would use to describe her complete look. Wearing a basic white T-shirt and dark denim topped off with this chic blazer is great for class, a presentation or even a meeting. A blazer is the perfect piece to transition from the day into night while continuing to convey a put-together look. This Fashionista is clearly ready for everything the day brings.  

However, what is a gloomy day without fun accessories? Partaking in what The Man Repeller would call an “arm party,” this Fashionista shows her quirky side. Adding a slight dash of color to her ensemble is an exciting way to include spontaneity in any outfit. Her bright pink nails also stand out amongst the dark and neutral hues, lending a warmer vibe to this look. Contributing to the flavor of this multidimensional ensemble, how cute is this spool of thread necklace? Just another great example of the endless possibilities accessories bring. STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Fairest Coat Of Them All

What is there to not love about a coat that gives you warmth, versatility and style brownie points? That coat this winter has to be the peacoat. It's so versatile, in fact, that American Apparel offers it in unisex. The wool material and length of the coat practically gives you the warmth of a radiator, therefore it is more than perfect for this country's sub-zero mornings. It was on one of those sub-zero mornings that I stumbled upon this Fashionista wearing the coat in topic with such effortless edge and attitude.

On the hanger the peacoat may cause some floods of doubt to enter your mind but when you take it off the hanger and try it on, I guarantee you that those doubts will wash away! Peacoats are also versatile when it comes to flattering figures as this coat will nearly flatter them all.

To recreate this Fashionista's effortlessly edgy look, all you need is a band tee, stone-washed jeans and some shoes with attitude. To keep it classic, a crisp white shirt with some riding pants and brogues will do the trick. The options are endless.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: On the Town in a Button-Down

I’ve always believed that there are certain items that every wardrobe should have. These are essential pieces that one can dress up or down for any occasion, whatever it might be. The button-down shirt is vital for any Fashionista/o’s closet.

This Fashionisto is a finance major and understands the need to constantly dress to impress. As a college student, he realizes that versatile items, like the button-down shirt, are a must. He tries to incorporate a button-down shirt in his ensemble every day, explaining that one can roll up the sleeves for a more casual look when it's warm outside or wear the sleeves down with a sweater when it's cooler. Today’s outfit includes a button-down shirt and a pair of shorts by Ralph Lauren, a Patagonia vest, a Knot Belt Co. trout belt, Tugs sunglasses and a pair of Sperry Top-Siders. The outfit is comfortable, casual and seems effortlessly put together.

The button-down shirt can be worn with other essential must-have items to create a stylish outfit. For male students, pick a button-down shirt that had some sort of pattern, whether it be plaid or checkered, in order to provide contrast to the other solid pieces. Wear it with a V-neck sweater and a pair of chino pants or jeans, depending on the occasion. 

For female students who own an assortment of patterned sweaters and don't know what to wear with them, try a basic denim button-down shirt. The solid backdrop is perfect for whatever exciting print you have on. Also, denim can match almost anything. Wear the denim button-down with a cheetah print sweater and a pair of black pants for a fun and classic look.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Statement Overcoat

The holidays are now over and winter is officially in full swing. With this comes bitter cold temperatures, rain showers from time to time and soon to be piles of snow here in Spokane. Heading out the door without an overcoat is simply not an option anymore and unfortunately winter tends to last far too long around here. So investing in a few overcoats is key to remaining fashionable this time of year. 

When I spotted this Fashionista, I not only loved her army green overcoat, but also the way she let it hang, unzipped, flashing glimpses of her outfit underneath. The thickness of her overcoat still provides warmth, while passerbys are able to notice the casual all black ensemble dressed up with layers of glistening necklaces. 

Her outfit is so simple, yet still very fashion forward. The overcoat has fur trim around the hood, a trend we have been seeing everywhere this season, the heeled booties add a touch of feminitity against the utilitaritian coat and monochromatic black underneath keeps the outfit from going overboard.

The Fashionista's high heeled booties in a rustic brown color prevent the outfit from becoming too casual and can easily be worn throughout multiple seasons, styled with dresses, skirts, tights, or in her case, denim. 

When searching for a winter coat this season, look for one that hits below the hips and above the knees. This still allows your outfit a chance to peek out from underneath, and protects your clothes when sitting down. If your overcoat is the main statement, choose interesting shoes, a weather-proof handbag and style your hair in a trendy way — I loved this Fashionista's straight bangs, slightly covering her eyes.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Feel Free

At a glance, you’d know this girl belongs in an art school. Her eclectic style says it all. Juxtaposing her fallow-colored pants with an oversized black cotton shirt and black sneakers, she has pulled-off a look that expresses her unique and carefree personality.
Piling a variety of bracelets on one wrist gives the whole outfit a punk-rock school vibe. The chains, the necklaces, and the black faux leather bag added an androgynous flair to her otherwise plain outfit. Her pants enabled her to move freely as she was stylishly cutting skirt patterns on the 8th floor of the arts building. Her loose black cotton top also compensated for the scorching sun that day. She managed to work easily under time pressure with all the pattern papers strewn over the floor, the limited space, and the puzzling pattern details she had to work on.

After a long day in school, one would want to break free. Going beyond the school’s dress code, one can play hooky by wearing this metallic glitter hot pants from Topshop. Ditch those sneakers as well and glam it up by throwing on these chocolate fleece lined biker ankle boots. When the sun sets these black suede peep toe platforms will be your hot ticket to a night of fun and wicked revelry. 

As this fashion student disregards trends and abides by her own rules, fashion has become her way of setting herself free from life’s do’s and don’ts, kind of like a stylish secret escape. It’s merely just about being your self and not living up to what others expect or want you to be. Others might think that she has piled on too many accessories or chosen a color combination that only a few will actually dare. Well, what really is too many or too little? Is there really a correct color combination? Today’s Fashionista decides only for herself. Break the chains, open the locks and set yourself fashionably free.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Orange County

It doesn’t exactly feel like fall outside just yet on Florida State’s campus, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start dressing for it.  This Fashionista paired a summery navy blue floral shift dress belted at the waist with a burnt orange cotton cardigan, giving the look more of an autumn feel.  Bold shades of orange have made their way onto fall runways in the form of stunning structured coats at Dries Van Noten, Yigal Azrouel and Burberry Prorsum. For a similar look, check out Asos who currently has boyfriend fitting blazers and a batwing kimono in the same hue. Incorporate this daring color into your wardrobe in other ways as well like this Fashionista, who sported a hand crafted Indian cloth messenger bag displaying black, yellow, neon blue, and orange tassels. It was a gift from a friend who picked it up from a street vendor in Soho, but lucky for you there are many similar options for sale on ebay. To finish the look, she wore nude colored slip on oxfords with her ensemble which was the perfect shoe choice because they go with everything year round. When wearing such an intense color like orange, it’s important to keep other elements in your outfit neutral and simple so they don’t clash.  If you ask me, having a nude shoe in your wardrobe is essential because it can easily be your go to option when nothing else looks right.  Australian brand EMU makes a great pair that has an effortless appeal and they guarantee it will enhance any outfit.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Casual Day

Kate Middleton is not just known for her elegance, but also for her well-put-together style.  Her style permeates where ever she goes, radiating confidence through everything she wears. I remember reading a tabloid article about Middleton over the summer that talked about how on a causal day, she would wear blue jeans with a tucked in button up shirt.  It then went on to show an array of pictures of her wearing that exact outfit in different variations.  Sometimes she paired it with a blazer, sometimes belted the jeans, or other times she would throw on her cowboy hat, but no matter what, it was always a pair of jeans and a button up.  I remember gazing over every picture and admiring how fabulous and composed she looked in such a basic outfit. 

I noticed those same factors in this week’s Fashionista’s outfit. It's simple, yet classic and stylish.  She too, took her dark skinny jeans and tucked a button up shirt into them. Adding a cute blazer on top of all that just gave her outfit a little more pizzazz.  Altogether, the way both Middleton and this week’s Fashionista put together their outfit is perfect for a daytime casual outting.  It makes you look professional, without looking too dressed up, and ready to take on the day.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Sailor Stripes

This Fashionisto is a perfect example of simple yet stylish summer dressing. Donning a T-shirt and jeans may seem basic, but the Fashionisto makes the outfit his own with stylish touches.

Nautical influences have become a summer sartorial staple over recent years for both Fashionistas and Fashionistos. Still a big trend this summer, nautical ensembles were inspired by nostalgia for British beach holidays of the past; think multicoloured beach huts, horizontal stripes and whimsical references, offset by light tailoring.

Jil Sander sent nautical T-shirts and popping colours down the catwalk and Junya Watanabe showed a seaside-inspired collection with stripes and rolled-up trousers worn with boat shoes and sailing jackets. All over the Spring 2011 runways were midriff bearing tops. They are a hot item for this summer’s wardrobe, and a fun twist on the shoulder-bearing tops, such as racerback tanks. Instead of showing both your shoulders and back, the crop top gives a peek of the shoulders and flaunts your midriff, while still leaving something to be desired. This clothing item has been shown in a number of different ways. On the Spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear runway of Rag & Bone, combine two style trends of Spring by presenting their crop top in crochet, while giving its overall look a tribal feel. Dare to bare? Channel L.A.M.B and wear a crop top that shows off your whole stomach. The crop top is the perfect way to stay and look cool in these hot summer days.

Still having trouble figuring out how to sport your new crop top? Take some style tips from this Fashionista. Her Forever 21 white crop top shows just a little skin on her shoulders, and a sliver of her midriff. Her choice of crop top keeps her looking classy and not too sexy. STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Shake It Up

Today I challenge you to shake up your wardrobe and throw a curveball into you closet. If ya'll are like me, you have let that causual summer mood slip over you. Since I'm not in school for the summer, I find it hard to feel motivatied to compile a fabulous outift when I'm only going to work or the nearest grocery store. That being said, I refuse to let myself slip into a fashion rut, escepcially since summer is the perfect season to try new style's that you were too scared of durig the semester. I need to be more like this Fashionista who literally caught my eye as she was whisking away to Urban Outfitters. Her outfit was refreshing in a sea of tank tops and College of Charleston t-shirts. This Fashionista was walking on King Street in her incredible peep toe booties. She gave her shoes an awesome twist by adding super cute socks. Also, she spun a new take on denim shorts by pairing her white blouse with bold blue shorts. The pop of color was fantastic.

We all need to follow this Fashionista and add a little flair and pop to our wardrobes. If you are still trying to get out of your rut, add pieces to your collection that are similar to the clothes that you are most comfortable. But, make sure to switch it up like colored denim shorts or printed shorts. Saving up for that summer vacay or just plain broke? Then accessories are your best friend. Awesome hair pieces, scarves, and jewlery will make any outift look brand spanking new and they tend to be cheaper than actual pieces of clothing.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: It’s a Perfect Time to Bow Out

Tapping into your feminine side using spring fashion isn’t hard at all. Finding your style niche in the plethora of floral prints, flouncy skirts and day dresses that fill store racks is bound to happen. But, what about the Fashionista who wants to flaunt her femininity while wearing jeans? There are so many ways to incorporate feminine tops and accessories in the spring with denim to ensure a fun and light look that can translate from campus to other occassions.

I caught this week’s Fashionista after her English class one day. The first thing that caught my eye was her top and its delicate bow detailing. Bows are personally one of my favorite style accessories for ability to turn the most basic pieces into ones that stand out. This Fashionista’s gray tank was accentuated by a large silk bow that blew with the wind. For a top like hers on a budget, try this black tank top by Nasty Gal. It combines velvet and bows for a unique contrasted look. If you prefer lace, this cream Topshop sleeveless top offers a bow embroidery. This 3.1 Phillip Lim floating bow top is a bit of a splurge, but perfect for a pair of skinny jeans and heels. Style any of these tops with your skinny jeans and you’ll have a feminine, yet comfortable outfit that is chic and timeless.

When it comes to footwear, this Fashionista merged the best of both worlds. Her peep-toe wedges featured woven leather detailing that can be worn with almost anything. Wedges are a great alternative to platforms and stilettos because of their comfort and versatility. These DKNY wedges are a staple in summertime footwear because of their intricate detailing. The rich color of leather and braided trim on its heel make this shoe perfect for strutting in your jeans and flirty top.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Military Chic

The military trend was one of my favorites this winter. Lace up boots, cargos, surplus coats and all things army green filled the stores and our campuses. As we transition into spring, this is one trend that can easily make the transition with us.

Today's Fashionista is showing us how to work the trend in that winter weather. Her army style surplus coat was what first caught my eye. These types of coats are definitely a piece that will transition with you into spring. This Fashonista is wearing a heavier winter style to keep warm with all that snow, but many brands such as American Eagle offer lighter versions that would look great with jeans or even with a girly dress. Her lace-up boots are also one of my favorite outcomes of this trend. I love how she has styled them loosely and with thick socks peeking out of the top. Not only are her thick socks on trend with the military style they are also perfect for winter.

Don’t worry, just because winter is ending (at least I hope so), doesn’t mean this trend is going anywhere. For spring, try an army style shirtdress like this one from ASOS. Or if you want to go casual, try cargo shorts or pants, which look great with sandals. Even those lace-up boots can be paired with shorts to bring them into spring. The key is to pick one or two items within the trend and then pair them with more feminine pieces to balance out the masculinity of the style. This week’s Fashionista does this with her leggings. They work with the heaviness of her coat and show that she still has a feminine shape.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Fashionably Living Together in Harmony

Most of us had the time of our lives freshman year, but some us had a few run ins. One of the biggest issues that most of us dealt with was roommate drama. I know I did and it was not one of my favorites moments, but I can say that it all went up from there. As I was walking to class one day, I was reminiscing about freshman year when I spotted these two Fashionistas Just assuming that they were two fashionable friends, I talked to them more finding out that they were roommates. I think that’s fate that I found two fabulous Fashionistas living together in one room. Did I just hit the jackpot Style Advice of the Week?

The way they interacted with each other I think I can make a safe assumption that the only drama they have is picking out the best outfit that makes each of them shine. I think they immediately have solved this issue.

Besides finding two Fashionistas as opposed to one, what really caught my attention were their outfits that worked in harmony with each other. They both achieved a sense of femininity balance. They each had a type of girly-ness to their outfit, but without the frills and bows of one. Both used pieces that contained patterns, but geared it towards what their own personal style is.

The Fashionista on the left has a more urban, girly. Her edginess came out with her menswear inspired cardigan and her hard leather boots. However, her floral printed romper really brings softness to her outfit. The Fashionista to the right has a simpler outfit, but it is by no means less fashionable. She wears a tribal print, which to me has a connotation of a manlier image. But the way this Fashionista works it makes it girly chic. She pairs it with a belt and a cream pea coat that gives it a ladylike feel.

This spring, that is approaching ever so quickly, is fully embracing an ethereal, womanly feel. That doesn’t mean throw out your menswear pieces or your boyfriend jeans. Just pair them with something extra girly that will make you feel more like a lady. Take the advice of these Fashionistas and bring you femininity down a notch with those extra menswear pieces. STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Trench Coat Fun

With midwinter quickly approaching, now is the best time to rummage through your closet and sift out which pieces will transition with you into spring. Not only is this process tedious and time-consuming, it is also disappointing to have pieces that are wearable for only one season. One item that I have consistently seen on both the runway and out and about in Seattle is the trench coat. Whenever I think about trench coats, I am instantly reminded of Burberry. Nearly every season, I will spot their classic trench coats adorned with large detailed buttons, thick belts to create a tailored silhouette, and an array of varying styles. Who can forget the flawless Burberry spring/summer 2010 campaign that actress Emma Watson modeled in last year? Instead of throwing it over your layers like you do now, you can swiftly make the transition to wearing it with dresses next season. Earlier this week, I caught one Fashionista wearing the perfect trench coat. In the sea of students on campus, our Fashionista caught my eye by pairing her H&M cream colored trench coat with a few adorable accessories, including a royal blue scarf, navy and brown book bag, and the most darling button shoes I’ve ever seen! She claims that this was her lazy day Friday outfit, but I beg to differ. Coincidentally, this Fashionista was actually on her way to a shopping excursion in downtown Seattle right when I ran into her.

Deemed a classic staple in 2010, the trench coat will continue its reign once again as one of the ten recommended pieces for spring according to InStyle. When it comes to the trench coat, there are plenty of options out there. I recommend choosing a simple style to allow you more room to play with accessories. My favorite picks include this Funnel neck trench coat from Gap and Nordstrom’s London Fog Double Breasted Trench Coat. Hint: For a pop of color or difference in texture, remove the belt that comes attached to the jacket and replace it with your own. Bright colors will stand out on either a cream or black trench coat, and definitely don’t be afraid to cinch your coat with a thin or thick belt.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Bags, Bags, Bags

It’s become an absolute Winter Wonderland in the lovely city of London this past week, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it; snowball fights, snow angels, warming hot chocolates, wholesome soups and the opportunity to dress the part of course, which is exactly what this Fashionista has done.

It’s essential to wrap up warm in these snowy conditions, and this Fashionista is completely on the money with her lovely attire. Not only does it tick all the boxes of a guide of how to keep warm, but she does it with the utmost style.

I absolutely love her cosy coat teamed with her adorable hat – I love the fact that there is a hint of the colour beige in the detail of the hat to link it perfectly to her coat.

Teamed with a simple pair of black leggings and a splash of colour in her scarf, the outfit resonates trend, but what I think completes her ensemble perfectly has to be her patent Chanel bag. Of course, not all of us can afford such luxury, but there are so many options for us to get the look. Faux bags are available left, right and centre; I would suggest looking at eBay and markets for such items. You can of course hunt through charity shops to see if you get lucky, there can be some true vintage gems in amongst the junk, that’s for sure. But designer make or not, it’s the idea of a statement bag that I think will complete any look this year; it’s the perfect accessory.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All That Glitters..Doesn’t Have to be Gold

Sequins are always a huge hit this holiday season with loads of parities to attend, what better way to set yourself apart then with a little bedazzle. Whether the sequins are gold, black, silver, pink, or any other colour you can think of; adding a touch of sparkle to your outfit is an absolute must for Fashionistas this December.

Today's Fashionista has shown us how to translate this glamorous sequin look into a day-time trend suitable for any occasion by wearing a sequined headband. Accessorizing with sequins has never been so easy! STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Winter Skirts

Winter has just about kicked in (although it was around 60 degrees this past week). Think it’s too cold to once and for all pack away your skirts and dresses? Not quite. If you follow the same trick this Fashionista did, who has also been snapped back in the warmer months in this post, you can be sure to stay warm – or at the very least, warmer than you actually thought. A stretchy cotton or jersey skirt, which works best in neutral colors or black as pictured, will give you the most comfort and options to mix and match with the heavier pieces in your closet. An option you can try can be found at American Apparel.

On top make sure to layer upon layer. If you’re wearing a skirt add a tank under a cardigan and a lightweight jacket, like the military inspired army green one you were so fond of this summer. If you’ve got on a dress add on a couple of thin knitted sweaters. This Fashionista chose a thick leather jacket finished off with a bold colored and printed scarf from Active(X) to keep out the wind.
Super thin sheer black tights cover her legs and those tough combat boots will keep her feet nice and warm. When wearing a skirt in its “off” season, incorporate tights into your look not only to keep your legs nice and toasty but as another way to mix in color, patterns, and texture.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Uncover Your Cover-up

Summer’s end is approaching at a fast rate and fall classes are on the horizon. Take advantage of the high UV which takes place typically during the first couple months of school. Throw on an effortless cover-up for class after your morning layout session. A cover-up should be simple to slip on and possess versatility. Wear a cover-up that can be transformed into various looks for any time of day given the right accessories and footwear. Maxi dresses and terry wraps are appropriate outer garments to dress on top of your swimsuit. It is important to choose a cover-up with plenty of concealment and one that is made from a lightweight fabric. This will keep the body cool from extreme heat and comfortable during classroom hours.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Femininity at Its Finest

I caught this week’s Fashionista on a night out with her girls. The night’s agenda included dinner and a Michael Jackson tribute band. I told her I liked her bracelets, and she informed me that they were Silly Bandz. "What are Silly Bandz," you ask? Bascially, they are silicone rubber bands made into various shapes, mostly animals. The cool boys and girls wear them on their wrists as bracelets. These things are so popular that they are banned at many schools for creating too much excitement and distraction!

Did all of you know about this new fad? Am I the only one who had no idea that Silly Bandz existed?

Anyway, perhaps a more obvious statement about this Fashionista is her big, bold floral dress. I don’t know about you, but I have always loved big floral patterns, whether they're on a dress, home textiles or even wall paper! So you can imagine my enthusiasm when I saw this flouncy number walking down the street. The ruffled hem and pink handbag make this an ultra girly ensemble and the perfect choice for a girls' night out!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Alluring Tunics

One of my favorite items and something that I feel should always be in your closet this season would have to be a tunic. They’re versatile and just one of those things that can be transformed into day-to-night wear. Personally I’d wear them to something like an outing with the girls or completely transform it into the perfect date night item. Tunics are a popular style this season because of their light cotton fabrics, colorful combinations and their unusual yet modern designs.

This Fashionista has shown us the perfect way to dress up a tunic for a simple outing. The tunic is intricate because of its lace detailing around the shoulders. Pairing a tunic with a pair of dark skinny jeans really allows her to accent the detailing on the tunic and the beautiful golden belt at her waist. The belt has a succession of embossed details which draws your eyes to them immediately. I’d say she really made her outfit pop with that cherry red handbag and the jewel encrusted pearl ring she had on her finger! To finish the look off our Fashionista wore a pair of studded sandals. Overall this ensemble gives you a Romanesque feel to it don’t you think?

Hint: if a tunic appears to be too short I’d suggest not wearing it as a dress, instead try paring it with a pair of jeans or cut-off shorts.

The 4th of July is right around the corner, and so are the barbeques and firework displays. During the day and night there are always many opportunities for us Fashionistas to shine. This week’s Fashionista is sporting one of the latest trend, the crop top. For daytime, pair it with shorts, or throw on a pair of jeans and you are good for an evening with the girls, whether you are going out or just hanging around someone's backyard. For extra pizzazz, put on a long necklace or a pair of earrings, even a thin belt would make the outfit complete.

But don’t forget the bug spray and sunscreen!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Fourth Of July Attire

While recently attending a friends barbeque party, I couldn’t help but praise all of the outfits, worn by friends and strangers alike. It was like looking into a sea of maxi dresses, rompers, floral prints, tunics, and wedges. As I caught myself drifting from conversation to conversation, I took mental notes of what I commended as fashionable, and couldn’t help but have a fashion-intake overload!

This of course had me thinking about our upcoming holiday, the Fourth of July. As many of us know, the Fourth of July is usually celebrated by attending an event such as a party. Attending an event is usually a red flag for trying to scramble up the perfect outfit. Well fear not, the trick to the perfect Fourth of July outfit can easily be put together with a few easy steps.

  1. Think colors: show off your patriotism with sporting the good ol' red, white and blue.
  2. Think sundresses: in 110 degree weather, its hard not to. 
  3. Think accessories: they can easily turn a day outfit into a night outfit, so make sure to carry back up jewelry in your bag to make this transition.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Loving Lace

It's always hard to conjure up the perfect ensemble for a concert.  Is it outdoors or indoors? Day or night?  Dressy or casual?  The good news is a music concert (especially in a college town) is a place where you can find many different styles.  So, when I attended the Kid Cudi concert in Eugene a couple weeks ago, there were limitless possibilities to share. 

One increasingly popular trend that has become a favorite of mine is lace.  There are so many different ways to incorporate it into an outfit, but these were two of my favorites.

This Fashionista matched a white, lace singlet underneath a great pair of acid wash, jean shorts and off-the-shoulder tee to add depth and character.  She rocked it perfectly, while still maintaining a laid-back vibe. Try shopstyle.com for other ideas of how to include lace in your outfit, or get inventive and make something yourself.

The moral of the story is: don't be scared to try something new or out of the ordinary.  Experiment with funky elements you love, and tone them down with every-day items you already own.  Have fun, trend-set and, most importantly, enjoy the music.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: It

Hello again eighties!! The neon trend has clearly made its way back into fashion this season in an updated way. This Fashionisto perfectly planned his outfit around his evening plans of listening to some techno beats at a local festival. I love how he paired the flashy tee shirt with neutral shorts to prevent himself from looking too much like an eighties flashback. The shockingly bright sunglasses, sneakers, and cap will make him stand out in the crowd; but by simply removing the accessories, he can make his outfit less outrageous, while staying trendy. To make his look even more unique, this Fashionisto splatter painted his own tee-shirt in order to add his personality into the mix. 

My advice to any Fashionistos/Fashionistas who are trying to duplicate this look is to pair vibrantly colored pieces with neutral staples in order to resist being too “loud”. If you aren’t ready to make such a bold statement, try adding a splash of neon with smaller accessories. Ray-Ban carries a wide array of sunglass options which make it easy to join this lite-brite trend. 

And for the Fashionistas out there, neon is not only for clothes, as many make-up lines have incorporated bright liners and eye shadows into their collections this season. Play around with different colors to find your perfect hue. My current favorites are MAC cosmetic’s dark green turquoise eye shadow paired with the liquid liner in “macrovelvet”. Also, OPI’s 2010 collection of polishes “Forever After Brights” are the ideal shades to use whether it’s for the toes or the fingers. Right now I’m sporting this polish in “Ogre the Top Blue”. Get creative and don’t be afraid of color this summer!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Go Tribal

Animal prints make their appearance on the fashion scene every few seasons and no one ever seems to get tired of them. From zebras to leopards to snakeskin, fashion has been obsessed with animals for quite some time.

I propose we try something new. Leave the wildlife behind and go tribal. Beautiful prints inspired by African textiles are all the rage this season. There are so many gorgeous designs available to choose from and it's easy to find something that will flatter your style and your wallet.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK

Today was the warmest day so far for the year and it was definitely evident. Not only was the sun shining but there was a definite buzz around campus of people basking in the sun and the lack of winter clothes was a refreshing change. This Fashionisto made the transition into spring in fine form with a great blazer and black and white scarf.

Here are a few must haves that I think no Fashionista/o should be caught without this spring:

1. Trench coat – channel your inner Sherlock Holmes in a great trench.
2. Blazer– don’t be afraid to experiment with textures and patterns with your blazers this spring.
3. Wayfarers– you can never go wrong with this classic piece of eyewear.
4. Denim– not only restricted to jeans this spring. Pick up a great denim shirt this spring.
5. Oxfords– trade in your ballet flats for a great new spin on the flat.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK

After this weekend and style stalking Fashionistas out on the street I came to a conclusion: the obsession with wearing leggings everyday has to go. We all got in this funk of comfort and basically tuned out other fashionable/relaxed bottom options. I think it may be time to give spandex a rest and consider purchasing a pair of harem pants or trousers for fall. Both these silhouettes steer away from the skin tight look of leggings and focus more on the exaggerated drapery near the waist. My personal favorite for these types of bottoms is Zara. Their fabric quality and fit usually seem to satisfy my needs–if you don’t happen to have the luxury of this retailer near you a suitable solution would be a pair from either OAK or Topshop!
