STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Taste Of Tribal

Bold prints are huge this season, and designers and Fashionistas alike have found that tribal-inspired prints are the perfect way to break loose from all the floral print and stripes. Donna Karan’s fall runway featured beautiful body con dresses in warm, desert hued tribal prints. J. Mendel added brighter colors and sequins to his abstract tribal print dresses, while Gwen Stefani for L.A.M.B. created eye-catching pantsuits in black and white tribal print.

This week’s Fashionista, Caroline Hudson, nailed two trends in one with her high-waist tribal print shorts. She balanced the look perfectly with a simple, coordinating long sleeve T-shirt and cowboy boots, adding the touch of southern flair that is so characteristic of Clemson.

There are so many fun ways to incorporate tribal print into your wardrobe this season. This cozy sweater from PacSun would look great with jeans and boots for a day of classes. For something a little funkier, try these tribal print leggings with black booties and an oversized, solid color blouse for a night out. If you’re not feeling quite that brave, this peplum top would also be great for a night on the town, paired with black skinny jeans, heels, and a bright blazer. If the bold print just isn’t your style, you can still add some tribal-inspired touches to your wardrobe with the right accessories. To add a subtle hint of the print try a graphic cuff like from BCBG, or this gold cuff from LuLu's with an etched chevron print. If you want something with a little more edge, look for one of this season's statement necklaces that has been infused with a little tribal flavor. This gold bib necklace from Forever 21 can be paired with virtually any top to add a little excitement and flair. If you're looking for something more understated, gold and wooden bangles are extremely versatile and add a touch of tribal to any outfit.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Taste of Tribal

Every once in a while when I stop to scan the campus for the latest fashion trends, I sometimes find myself disappointed when I see the same Barbour jacket, lululemon yoga pants and Hunter boots on just about every girl that passes by. So, I can’t help but get excited when I see an unexpected, funky twist to an otherwise simple look.  This Fashionista’s tribal printed scarf is just the pop of coolness I had been searching for. Her one simple decision to wrap this cozy accessory around her neck gave the otherwise preppy, neutral-colored outfit a new edge and made an instant eye-catching style statement.

From feather hair extensions to patterned pullovers, Aztec-inspired pieces and tribal prints are all the rage as we transition from a snowy February to the spring months. Strong prints like these give winter wardrobes a cool, rustic vibe. These patterns are bold and graphic and are usually found in warm, earthy tones like browns, deep reds and oranges. Some designs are more geometric like this one, while others are more earthy and floral like this one. This Fashionista rocks a subtler tribal accent compared to the over-the-top hippie-esque trends of indie music festivals. She proves that you don’t need moccasins, a fringe vest or hair beads in order to show off your exotic side.

Anthropologie and Tolani have a wide selection of Aztec-printed scarves that come in a variety of shades and designs. Don’t forget to try tribal-inspired jewelry, belts or even sky-high wedges as alternative ways to incorporate this earthy trend into your look. The classic Burberry Brit plaid peaking out from this Fashionista’s duffle coat is an interesting way to mix tribal motifs with a contrasting pattern. Since the rest of her look is extremely simple, she cleverly avoided a print overload. So, mix up your east coast outfits with a little something exotic!
