STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All American

Last weekend, I met Diarra, a sophomore at Columbia University, who exhibits some of the strongest trends of the season and simultaneously rewrites the definition of weekend wear. To begin, a jean shirt appears to be the staple of the season. A perked collar and rolled cuffs gives the shirt a casual tilt and also directs it clear of any blatant Western affiliations. Denim is also a welcomed change from the textures and colors of typical button downs. If you are looking for a denim button down, you can look at a variety of places including J.Crew or H&M, depending on the price range in mind.

This season, brightly colored pants are another must-have. Colorful jeans have been enormously popular so far this school year, but chinos, such as these, are appropriate for a wide range of occasions and therefore might be a better buy if you are grazing the market. This Fashionista explained that her multi-purpose pants could be found at Ann Taylor, which encourages us to this of this brand in a revitalized light as a shopping locale for fashion forward college students. As for which color of pants to choose, since many stores offer the entire color spectrum, lean towards darker colors for these coming cold months. Jewel tones like emerald green and sapphire blue are always stylish for fall, but the color of the season is undoubtedly a shade somewhere between maroon and violet. However if you’re on the fence about a color, a neutral like black or gray is chic year-round.

As for accessories, this Fashionista shows us that simplicity is key, which her style icon, Diane von Furstenberg, would agree with. The thin belt, which is both utilitarian and useful for bringing in the sandals, can be purchased at Ann Taylor as well. The eye-catching bow-tied scarf is a fun flourish too – bringing in some Parisian flair to an otherwise preppy, all-American ensemble.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All-American

This Fashionisto is celebrating patriotism with some red, white and blue all the way down to his watch. You can never go wrong with all-American colors and brands.

First, he chooses a classic red stripped button-down from Brooks Brothers with his sleeves rolled to prepare for the long hot summer days. He also makes a statement with his torn front pocket that says “preppy but edgy.” Keeping it casual with unbuttoned top buttons and an untucked shirt creates a comfortable look easy for most guys to pull off. He then combines his shirt with a pair of staple navy blue shorts, similar to these from Polo Ralph Lauren. Every guy should have a pair of these because they match just about everything from white, red, gray, patterns, stripes and even a light blue shirt. Essentially, he uses two great pieces that can be mixed or matched and worn for different occasions. To all those guys out there, take note.

I am using the term “accessorizing” for guy’s fashion loosely because it may scare them off. However, this Fashionisto did a great job with the little touches. His “guy proof,” a.k.a waterproof, Matte Drab watch from Nixon looks great with any look from button-downs to bathing suits. Throwing on an all-time favorite of mine, these Ray-Ban Wayfarers adds to his preppy laid-back look. Their tortoise shell color ties in his tan Rainbow flip-flops.

This Fashionisto keeps in simple with his understated brands and comfy touches while staying true to his style.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All American

Going to school in Rhode Island has introduced me to a new realm of Fashion. In New Jersey, I don’t see a lot of Patagonia Pull overs or worker boots, but around campus, it’s a hot trend. My thoughts are, if you can pull it off, then why not? This Fashionisto definitely can pull off the All American, Bruce Springsteen look . I spotted him on campus and was immediately drawn to his Vintage Mets hat which features an American Flag print, after taking a look at his hat I noticed his preppy worker outfit, and really loved how it looked.

Baseball hats are trendier now than ever before. So many street wear designers have devoted their collections to simple baseball hats. My favorite hat company is Supreme. Supremes hats are simple and minimalistic, usually only featuring their notorious logo, but that is was makes the hats such a novelty. However, if you are more into supporting your favorite Sports team, then head over to MLB.com, they have a huge selection of baseball caps!

To complete an All American look like this Fashionisto, you need a Patagonia pull over. These pullovers come in a bunch of different colors and prints and are super comfy. You can find different styles on Patagonia.com. His boots are Timberland, which can be found cheapest on Zappos.com. You can copy this look with your favorite pair of old blue jeans!
