Summer may be months away, but let’s face it: summer internships are never far from our minds. Whether it may be in the form of an upcoming interview, internship postings online or constant reminders from parents, Fashionistas and students always have careers and the future on the brain. With talk of careers comes thinking about career wear—leggings and sweatshirts on lazy days won’t cut it in the corporate world.
Today’s Fashionista is facing the impending doom of next summer’s internship search head on with the interview opportunities available on campus for companies nationwide. As a business student, she keeps it professional with a completely black ensemble—perfect for the business world of NYC. Her dress, complete with an A-line skirt and a cinched waist, has a slight detail in the gold buttons on the side, but is strictly professional but still maintains a fun and fashion forward feel with the fuller skirt. No business ensemble is complete without a blazer—and this Fashionista opted for a classic black one to stay warm in the chilly fall temperatures. To spice up her outfit a tad, a bold black statement necklace is worn around her neck, with square shaped stones hanging from a gold chain. The necklace is bold, but the black color keeps it practical for an interview or the workplace.
A black dress appropriate for the office is a must when working an internship —and for life! This short-sleeved dress from Forever 21 fits the bill perfectly, as does this sleeveless one from ASOS. Try J.Crew for statement jewelry to add a touch of glam to your professional ensemble.
As we continue to get deeper into the fall and upcoming winter season the colors in most people’s wardrobes tend to become darker; transitioning from deep fall oranges and yellows to navy, black and brown. Just because the colors begin to turn darker, however, does not mean that the clothing items need to be any less stylish than what you would usually wear.
Black is a very basic color and essential in everyone’s wardrobe, but don't keep your pieces looking as basic as your color. Take this week’s Fashionista for example, she is dressed in basically all black, yet her ensemble has a variety of aspects to it creating an overall chic look. I am loving her relatively light-weight, black ruffled jacket. An alternate style to a ruffled jacket would be a trench coat, which can be worn dressed up or dressed down. Most people tend to purchase trench coats in beige or light brown colors, but black is a great substitute color.
The next item that I want to focus on is this Fashionista’s great black leather boots. This pointed-toe style strays from the typical black riding boot that you see around many campuses lately which is why I like them so much. While her boots are very practical they are also subtly unique. Similarly, square-toed boots are also a great way to stray away from what everyone else is wearing without going too crazy.
Lastly, this Fashionista’s printed black and white floral skirt is a great addition to her ensemble. The demure pop of white helps to make her outfit less stuffy. Subtle prints, like this one, in neutral colors are a great way to add something special to your winter wardrobe (especially around the holiday season). When you wear a neutral color print it is also fun to add pops of color to your outfit, think about a fun colored pair of shoes or a bright scarf.
Bold colours are not the only way of making an impact this summer because you could also choose the opposite look — by going all black. This colour is not only slimming, but it is also an easy way to come off as timelessly elegant. Seek inspiration from this week's Fashionista, who sticks to the classic colour whilst also sporting one of the season's hottest trends: pleats. Although I've seen a fair amount of similar styles around London, this Fashionista knows how to stand out and rock her look, which she pairs with pale skin and a bold red lip for maximum effect.
The Fashionista's ensemble appears effortless, as she makes use of black pieces from top to toe: a black midi length dress bought at Camden Market, a black purse and black wedges. She smartly adds a touch of colour to her outfit by mixing the black with a shimmery gold, from her purse to the indispensable, waist-defining belt. This association of colour works better than any other would in completing the look and making it chic. Furthermore, it turns the outfit into great day to night wear. I simply adored the way in which the Fashionista makes up for the lack of bright colours by playing with texture, from the faux crocodile handbag to her dress's lovely flowy fabric and see-through pleats. Whilst being understated, the look is most definitely noticeable.
Black is so simple to wear and mix that it is absolutely necessary to include in one's wardrobe. Copy this Fashionista's outfit by investing in an elegant pleated dress, such as this ASOS number. Alternatively, you could also opt for a black pleated midi skirt from Topshop, which you would pair with a simple black top and this black Forever 21 handbag.
