We’re living the cape life this fall. No, not the way you think. We’re ditching Cape Cod and snuggling into our warm, cozy capes.

Although Halloween is just a few days away, the cape is not just for Little Red Riding Hood and Count Dracula! But once again pulling inspiration from my surroundings, the cape is such a great addition to anyone’s fall wardrobe. Who wants to get swallowed in an oversized North Face winter coat for the next four months? Not me! The cape is a great alternative to the winter coat because it combines practicality and style.

This Fashionista was just leaving Sunday brunch with friends when I spotted her. She looked so comfortable in her salt-and-pepper tweed cape as she walked down Boylston Street. Pairing her cape on top of a thick knit cardigan and black skinny jeans, this Fashionista was the epitome of comfortable-chic on this lazy Sunday afternoon. For a similar cape, try Calvin Klein’s Herringbone Bouclé Cape, which has an added waist-tie to give you a sleek silhouette underneath all those layers.

One the most flattering silhouettes is the Calvin Klein Double-Breasted Cape. The portrait collar on this wool-blend coat will keep your neck warm and, again, the cape has a belt to accentuate your waist. But if you opt for a black or dark neutral cape, play up your bottom half. Opt for a bright skinny jean like these Madewell Skinny Skinny Ankle Color Pop Jeans that come in Wild Poppy, Portico Green and Vineyard Green.

The key to the cape is accessorizing. This Fashionista opted for a neutral ensemble with a black leather tote and oversized sunglasses. I like to pair my cape with a faux fur collar like this H&M one because it adds a little flair to my outfit. Or if your cape doesn’t have a belt, add your own! For a bright addition, go for this detailed Ecote Coin Belt, channeling Altuzarra’s fall collection.

Winter is coming and it’s going to be my mission to get everyone out of their black fleeces and down jackets. Don’t hide under a winter coat; let your personality shine with a great cape!
