STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Check Mate

When it comes to accessories, girls seem to have all the fun. The possibilities are virtually endless. There are infinite colors and styles of purses, shoes, jewelry and even hair feathers. While boys seem to have a limited pool to pull from, some have been extremely successful in their selection. This week marks my first time posting on a Fashionisto, but his combination of simple outfit and flawless accessories made him hard to resist.

First let's start with the clothing portion. He pairs a pair of skinny khaki colored chinos with a small check shirt in a dark green and white. A great pair of slim pants are a must-have item for any aspiring Fashionisto. Try a pair of American Apparel’s Corduroy Slim Slack in any color and a gingham shirt from J.Crew for a similar look.

Now let’s move onto what sets this Fashionisto’s outfit apart from the rest: the accessories. Literally from head to toe he has selected some super stylish accessories. Starting with the feet, he wears a chic pair of boots that complement his slim pants perfectly. His simple d-ring belt picks up the black of his homemade pendant necklace and thick-rimmed glasses, à la Clark Kent. To make the pendant, this Fashionisto just added a good-looking rope to his favorite chess piece. The piece is not only creative, but also entirely unique. You know no one else will have it! Try creating your own pendant with random objects that are important to you. For example a vintage whistle or an interesting key will look neat as well. Best of all, this DIY project is unisex for all you Fashionistas and Fashionistos out there!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Check Mate

Plaid and check patterned shirts are a staple in every man’s wardrobe. Often associated with farmer-inspired flannel shirts, the checked trend is constantly being revived by fashion magazines, bands and movies. Thus, the resurgence in folk and never-ending popularity of indie-rock bands indicate that plaid and checked shirts are here to stay.

Today’s Fashionisto aims for casual look by combining green and blue button shirt with dark blue jeans and dark brown suede boots. A well balanced and interesting ensemble looks comfortable and nice for day wear as well as a night out.

Having a checked shirt in the wardrobe is essential this season, as it is easy to wear and also looks great by adding a basic plain v-neck T-shirt underneath and some comfort jeans or layering with plain cardigan over the top for more sophisticated look. The High Street shops such New Look, All Saints and Topshop offer a variety of plaid and checked shirts for perfect spring/summer looks.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Check Mate

In the world where the weather usually predicts the trend, it's hard to want to let go of the sunny summers, holiday mood is still up and running and the dread of cold winter’s are starting to kick in.

This week's Fashionisto, Jordan, proves that summer is yet to be over with his button-down H&M Shirt, Zara jeans and Lugigi Batani shoes, which blend in just impeccably. These wardrobe classics are perfect for warm months. Wear the checked shirts rolled up with some denim bottoms for a simple yet stylish look for those lazy summer days.

This suburban look of patterned checks, straight hem worn untucked makes basic meet stylish. A bland outfit can be pepped up with the addition of check and take you from office drab to happy hour boy in no time. Whether tartan or large windowpane, go with bright colors and wide checks to spice up your style.

For a checked shirt just like his, Topman and H&M are the best choice. To get a little fancier go for Superdry’s classic shirt that can also prep your wardrobe up for the winter season, which also has a cool hoody to cover yourself in the rain because everybody knows they cannot get away from the rain in a city like Manchester. If you wish to add a little lavish touch to your ensemble, get a pair of  Wayfarers by Ray-Ban, which make summer worthwhile. Last but not least, your shoes, believe it or not, make ones impression of yourself complete; this week's Fashionisto wears classy black leather shoes by Lugigi Batani, which spices up his sophisticated style.

Three ways to prep a checked shirt:
1. Denim
2. Rolled sleeves
3. A stylish vest

Hint: if you are going to go all out with checks and stripes, a solid color pant keeps the perfect balance. This will help to ground your look avoiding pattern overkill.
