STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Chunky Knits

When I think of fall several things come to mind—warm apple cider, colorful crunchy leaves, pumpkin picking and chunky knits.  There is just something so cozy about throwing a big sweater over top of an outfit. It’s the key element in layering, especially on the days when the temperatures can be bone-chilling in the morning, but sunny and warm by the afternoon.

Even from a far distance, this Fashionista grabbed my attention with her pumpkin-orange sweater. From her dark red paisley-print scarf to her khaki skinnies, her entire outfit screamed fall. She seamlessly paired her open cardigan with a plain fitted shirt and neutral pants, giving them a twist by cuffing the hemlines. To add a little flare to her ensemble, this Fashionista wore pointed cheetah-print ballet flats, a long scarf and a navy and white satchel with brown leather detailing. I loved that she combined patterns to create an effortlessly chic look.

To avoid adding bulk to your frame, choose a form-fitting silhouette on the bottom. Skinny jeans or a skirt with tights help to contrast the chunky knit. For the fall season, opt for muted hues, like cream, black and tan, or go for vibrant colors like orange, plum and royal blue. Snag this Fashionista’s style with a thick sweater like this one and you’ll be set for the chilly fall days.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Chunky Knits

So now that the doom and gloom has made itself comfortable and is officially upon us, its time to break down the trends of the new season to decide our faves and this week's Fashionista has followed Missoni’s autumn/winter 2012 trend to a T! The eye-catcher of Missoni’s runway show was the chunky knit jumpers over the ground sweeping maxi skirts. This Fashionista shows the winter winds are no match for her oversized knitted cardigan and loosely hung scarf.

This week’s street icon shows her on-trend cardigan is not the only eye-catcher of the outfit but teamed with her studded leggings she’s found the perfect substitute for everyday jeans. Her choice of colour is an interesting mix of the lighter shades of the winter palette with a blend of grey, blue and beige. This Fashionista has found the key to softening a winter look by taking the lighter side of the road.

This week’s chosen one finishes off her look with her rose gold Balenciaga bag, which adds a touch of class to the casual day look. Teaming this with some subtle accessories worn on the sleeve are enough to win us over and make her this week's Fashionista!

Hint: Heavy knits are a must-have this winter but if you’re worried about drowning out your feminine silhouette, feel free to add a waste belt or team it with skinny jeans or leggings.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Chunky Knits

Of all the amazing things Baltimore has to offer, its weather would probably never top the list. While there are many beautiful days in this city, Baltimore weather has been known to be unpredictable: it goes from sunny and humid to windy and cold within the span of a few hours.  Just as breaking out fall clothing seems like the best idea, the sun comes out and makes those layers and boots seem just a bit too warm.

The quintessential fall item, the sweater, has gotten a new spin with the Fall 2010 lines. Sweaters have become chunkier, bigger and more comfortable yet increasingly more stylish as designers put a greater emphasis on the knit trend.  Big design houses such as Prada, Missoni and Michael Kors covered their models in oversized slouched sweaters that exuded comfort and functionality. This trend continued with designers Alexander Wang and Catherine Malandrino re-interpreting knitwear in their Spring 2011 lines.

This Fashionista, originally from LA and still adjusting to the weather, found a perfect balance by pairing her belted crochet dress with a chunky purple cardigan.  Throw a chunky cardigan or wrap sweater over a dress, a skirt or a pair of skinny jeans and stay warm while still looking trendy for these early fall days.
